Super Troopers 3 Brings the Original Gang Back

Did anyone really have Super Troopers 3 on their 2026 movie bingo card?

Probably not, but the cult comedy franchise has officially returned. Directed by Jay Chandrasekhar, Super Troopers 3reunites the familiar Broken Lizard team of Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske. The movie was released in theaters on August 7, 2026.

For longtime fans, that reunion is immediately the biggest reason to watch.

The chemistry between these characters remains surprisingly natural. It does not feel like a group of actors being forced back together decades later simply because a studio wanted another sequel. Instead, it often feels like watching old friends fall immediately back into the same ridiculous behavior.

And that may be the secret to enjoying Super Troopers 3.

You are not necessarily watching it for an intricate story. You are hanging out with these characters again.

What Is Super Troopers 3 About?

The new movie mixes another criminal investigation with an extremely messy personal problem.

Farva is preparing to marry Thorny's sister, and Thorny is definitely not happy about it. While he attempts to interfere with the relationship, the troopers also find themselves dealing with a dangerous new drug operation.

Searchlight's official synopsis confirms that the chaotic engagement and drug-ring investigation form the central story of the third movie.

Of course, this is still Super Troopers, so solving the actual crime is only part of the experience.

Expect immature behavior, physical comedy, crude jokes, absurd situations and characters doing spectacularly stupid things with complete confidence.

The Cast Chemistry Is Still the Movie's Biggest Strength

The best moments in Super Troopers 3 are not necessarily individual punchlines.

They come from the characters playing off one another.

That becomes especially obvious once the movie settles into its rhythm. The conversations, arguments and reactions often become funnier than the actual setup of a joke.

Broken Lizard understands these characters extremely well, and after so many years together, the cast knows exactly how far to push each scene.

That familiarity gives the movie an easygoing quality. Fans who grew up quoting the previous films may feel as though they are returning to a strange group of friends they have not seen in years.

The franchise itself has always survived because of that loyal audience. The original film developed into a cult favorite, while Super Troopers 2 was famously brought to life with fan support. Its crowdfunding campaign ultimately raised more than $4.6 million.

That history makes the third movie feel less like a random sequel and more like another reunion made specifically for the people who kept the franchise alive.

The Humor Definitely Isn't for Everyone

This is where Super Troopers 3 becomes much harder to recommend universally.

If you already dislike the style of comedy associated with Broken Lizard, this movie is extremely unlikely to change your mind.

The humor remains deliberately outrageous, childish and crude. There are physical gags, uncomfortable jokes, absurd conversations and plenty of moments where the entire joke depends on how committed the actors are to doing something incredibly stupid.

Sometimes it works.

Sometimes it really doesn't.

I would not personally describe this as my favorite type of comedy. I normally prefer movies where the humor sits on top of a stronger emotional or character-driven story. Movies such as Bridesmaids or The Hangover work for me because even if you removed some of the jokes, there would still be relationships and emotional stakes holding everything together.

Super Troopers 3 operates differently.

The chaos is the attraction.

Still, even if this style of humor is not completely for you, there are enough jokes thrown at the audience that a surprising number can eventually land.

Should Super Troopers Have Modernized Its Comedy?

One interesting question surrounding a franchise this old is whether its humor should change with the times.

My answer is: probably not.

Trying too hard to reinvent Super Troopers for a completely different generation might defeat the reason fans wanted another movie in the first place.

Longtime viewers are not buying a ticket because they want Broken Lizard to suddenly become a completely different comedy group. They want the weird characters, inappropriate jokes, callbacks and ridiculous behavior that made them fans.

And Super Troopers 3 understands that.

There is certainly an argument that some elements of the formula feel dated; contemporary reviews have already been divided over whether the old-school approach still works in 2026.

But changing everything simply to appear modern could have made the sequel feel even less authentic.

Is Super Troopers 3 Just Nostalgia?

Partly.

But nostalgia is not automatically a bad thing.

Super Troopers 3 does not appear interested in winning over an entirely new audience. It knows exactly who has been waiting for these characters to return.

If you love Super Troopers, Beerfest, Harold & Kumar and other outrageous R-rated comedies built around absurd situations and group chemistry, there is a good chance this movie will give you exactly what you want.

If the earlier Super Troopers movies never made you laugh, the third installment probably will not convert you.

And that is perfectly fine.

Final Verdict

Super Troopers 3 works best when viewed as a reunion rather than a reinvention.

Not every joke lands, the comedy remains extremely specific, and viewers looking for a deep story may come away disappointed. But the returning Broken Lizard cast still has the chemistry that made the franchise popular in the first place.

For existing fans, that may be enough to justify one more ride with the Vermont State Troopers.

For everyone else, your reaction to the first two movies is probably the best indication of how you will feel about this one.

So, is Super Troopers 3 necessary? Maybe not. But for the audience that has spent years quoting these characters, necessity was probably never the point.
