'Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League' Video Game Trailer Unveiled At DC FanDome

What a time to be a DC gamer! As if DC FanDome’s announcement of Gotham Knights was not enough, the virtual convention also provided a good look at Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. Speaking for myself, this trailer hits the right notes for me. The banter between Harley Quinn, King Shark, Captain Boomerang, and Deadshot is hilarious. These characters have good chemistry, and it should be fun to see their interactions throughout the rest of the game. I am very curious about how they are going to confront the likes of this seemingly corrupted Superman (if that is in fact the old familiar boy scout). It is also refreshing to see the brightness of Metropolis in any Suicide Squad-related media.

For those curious about what universe this game takes place in, it is actually part of the Arkhamverse. This makes sense, given that it is made by Rocksteady. Surely, gamers are somewhat familiar with the Batman: Arkham games. It should be noted, however, that, in 2014, there was an animated film titled Batman: Assault on Arkham, which also took place in this universe. That film was, in my opinion, mistitled. While Batman was in it, it really should have been called Suicide Squad: Assault on Arkham, seeing how the team is front and center in that film. Plus, given what happens to King Shark in that film, I would think that this video game takes place sometime before that animated film, unless continuity is ignored a little or some incredibly ridiculous comic book-like explanation allows for this game to take place sometime afterward. I will try not to think too much about the continuity, and focus more on how fun this game looks like it will end up being.

With the buzz surrounding James Gunn working on The Suicide Squad, it seems that, beyond the comics, the team is gaining a renaissance of sorts. 2016’s Suicide Squad film was generally not so well-received. After that, the 2018 animated film Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay made for a fine addition to the DC Animated Movie Universe, and some members of the team of that film made their way into Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, the conclusion to this line of animated films that take place in the same universe/timeline. DC might be anticipating that the Suicide Squad brand’s value will rise again thanks to the film coming from Gunn.

If the virtual panel is any indication, we might be seeing Will Arnett get some sort of voice cameo in the game. Arnett suggested that he should voice an NPC, and it seemed that there was an agreement on the panel. Whether the agreement will come to fruition is yet to be seen. Given that he has voiced Lego Batman, it would be amusing if he were to voice Batman in a cameo appearance. Given the comedic nature of this upcoming game, his voice might not feel too out of place, depending on the vocal delivery. I would not worry too much about whether or not he will be in the game, however. I am just very glad that this game is happening.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League is set to be released in 2022. As such, the release seems far off, but it seems like it will be worth the wait. In the meantime, gamers will be able to look to the release of Gotham Knights in 2021. Indeed, it is a good time to be a DC gamer.
