Sugar Rush was the highest grossing Nigerian movie of last year and the 4th highest grossing Nigerian movie of all time. It also had the biggest opening weekend for a Nollywood film in 2019 and the second biggest opening weekend for a Nollywood film of all time.

Sugar Rush was by all means and looks, a HUGEEEEE CINEMATIC SUCCESS.

Then, on July 3rd the movie made its official premiere on Worldwide streaming platform, Netflix, where it immediately became the Number One Movie in Nigeria and claimed that position for a solid number of days.

Sugar Rush was the talk of the town, in fact not just the town, the world.

It was a big deal.

And so in celebration of that, we’re counting down some fun behind the scenes secrets from the set of Sugar Rush that you may have not known about.

Are you ready to see these? Then let’s go!

1. The car explosion was REAL.

Towards the end of the movie, not to give away any spoilers: a car blows up. This wasn't computer generated, the producers actually opted to really blow up the car so that the actors' reactions would be authentic. The explosion did happen and the actors reactions were real.

2. Half of the movie was improv.

While Sugar Rush has an overarching storyline that is not only clever but also a lot of fun to watch, a lot of what we see in the movie was spontaneous and an in-the-moment type of thing.

Speaking about the characters, the director Kayode Kasum revealed that when he had the meeting with the three main actresses who play the sugar sisters, Adesua Etomi, Bisola Ayeola, and Bimbo Ademoye, they got it and that was all.

After that they read the script, understood what was needed of them and then the rest was just synergy and a nice catch-and-response kinda acting that could only come from this dynamic pair.

In fact, Adesua said:

Half of the things you see in there were spontaneous and we were all so in tune and just being on set and giving a character that you can play with, it was so much fun.

3. Tobi flew through Sugar Glass

In a very famous scene where Tobi Bakre's character Andy flies through a glass window, many were shocked as to how he didn't sustain any injuries and as to how they were able to achieve such. It is because Tobi Bakre's character actually flew through sugar glass which is very easy to make, buy, and can also be eaten.

4. Obum didn't exist until William Uchemba

One of the most beloved characters from Sugar Rush was Obum played by William Uchemba however it will surprise you to note that Obum was not even originally called Obum. The character was completely different with an English name. This was until they cast Willam Uchemba who opted to give the character the name, Obum and play him in the way we see in the final version of the movie.

5. Uzor Arukwe's character voice started as a joke.

Another now iconic part of Sugar Rush is Uzor Arukwe's character's voice. His speech pattern and voice are now so iconic and synonymous with his character, however the voice started as a joke he would put on on the set of Africa Magic's Unbroken to lighten the mood. When he and the producers started talking about the character of Knight in Sugar Rush and what he could do to make it stand out, Uzor did this voice and it stuck. Now, it is iconic.

6. Bisola said yes before even reading the script.

In an interview with TVC, Bisola revealed that once Jade Osiberu, the executive producer of Sugar Rush gave her a phone call to tell her about the project and a little bit about the synopsis, she said she was down to do it. That was even before Jade sent the script, which she says was just had her laughing throughout. Shortly after, Adesua reached out to her to tell her she was excited about working on the project 2 months before shooting even started. After that, it was all smooth sailing for them.

7. The actors are excited for a Sugar Rush 2, 3, 4...

Adesua Etomi expressed how much she loved this movie in an interview with TVC and she said:

I actually cannot wait. I'm like Sugar Rush 2, Sugar Rush 3, Sugar Rush 4, Sugar Rush 7! We're here for you. Because I really really enjoyed playing that character because people that do know me know that I have a very fun side.

Well, here's to Sugar Rush 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and even 7. 🥂

That's All
