Stop With The Disney Sequels!

Because do we really need another Frozen?

I was struggling trying to think of an unpopular opinion but then it hit me when I was watching Frozen II for the first time last night. I AM SO OVER THE DISNEY/PIXAR SEQUELS! Not every (if any) movie needs one! I don’t care how great the first one was. We all know the second (and god forbid, THIRD) is not going to be any better! So why do we keep getting them? Money, I suppose. But wouldn’t making something new be more worthwhile?

Is anyone actually excited by these anyway? The response I’ve gotten so far is “oh well it’s in theaters, guess we’ll see it. We have a 5 year old after all.” Sure, the kid doesn’t care so I guess the parents don’t either but still. I know I’ve gotten older and don’t watch these movies anymore but at least we had some variety growing up. Maybe the idea is to only have one princess doll for kids to play with so they don’t turn into hoarders? These are my questions.

The only exceptions I will make are: The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride, Toy Story 2, and Aladdin and the King of Thieves (which was technically the 3rd). Here is my reasoning:

The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride: Oh the drama. The music. The characters. This movie was everything to me and it still holds up. I love being able to sing along to it with my siblings and live in nostalgia.

Toy Story 2: Absolutely heartbreaking in the best way. Jessie’s story (and song!) made this movie completely about her struggles and I was there for it.

Aladdin and the King of Thieves: Um Robin freakin’ Williams was back as the Genie! Honestly I had no idea that Return of Jafar was the second movie because it doesn’t even touch this one! This movie is full of Robin-isms and is hilarious from beginning to end!

Disney has had some strong characters which I will applaud them for but do we need to keep continuing a story that really isn’t there? Don’t get me wrong, I just praised Toy Story 2 but did we need the third? DID WE NEED A FOURTH? At that point, what is there left to tell? I enjoyed Toy Story as a kid and can continue to appreciate it but the last two just don’t count for me.

Honestly, give me another Brother Bear or Tarzan-esque movie with a Phil Collins soundtrack! I realize there were sequels but who remembers them? No one! The music makes the movie. Even The Lion King had Elton John. When I think about the Disney “classics” that technically had sequels, it makes me so mad because they waited years later to make them like most production companies today. In my mind, the sequels to The Little Mermaid, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Bambi, The Fox and the Hound, Cinderella, 101 Dalmatians (the animated one), Peter Pan, Mulan, etc. do not exist!

Don’t even get me started on the “live action” remakes! Too late, here I go! The Lion King. Again.. What was that? It was similar enough for you to follow with just the right amount of slight differences to piss you off. Totally unnecessary. Enough with the animal-focused Disney stories. They genuinely make no sense. So far the only one I’ve enjoyed has been Beauty and the Beast with Emma Watson. I am excited for the new Mulan because they clearly took a different approach. Sure, I’ll miss the fun songs but I can’t wait to see what it has become. To summarize this nonsense, stop. Just stop. Make content that makes sense to watch. Don’t regurgitate a story we have all already seen before. Thank you for reading my unpopular opinion that quickly turned into a review of The Lion King.
