A Movie Review

Wow.. all I can say is wow! First of all, SPOILER ALERT! You probably already figured that, but just in case you haven’t seen Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker yet and want to, you have been warned. The final ending to the Star Wars saga has come at last. And although the last one left me a little nervous, see my other review at https://vocal.media/futurism/star-wars-the-last-jedi-predictions-and-review, I came away from this movie thoroughly satisfied and there are several reasons. There seemed to be at least one missed opportunity, but let's get started.

Respect for the Force

In my last Star Wars review, I mentioned that one of the main problems I had with The Last Jedi was the seeming disrespect there was from Luke for the force, the Jedi, and lightsabers. In one particular scene I hope never to see again, Luke takes the lightsaber from Rey and throws it behind him. This was ridiculous because one, the Luke everyone knew and loved would never treat a lightsaber that way even if disillusioned, and two, it seemed like a cheap joke. In the newest installment in the controversial trilogy, J.J Abrams makes a point to have Luke catch the lightsaber after Rey throws it. This seems to give a nod to what many people were upset over and fix the fault in Luke's actions from the previous movie.

Rey's Parents

This can not be overstated, the twist that Rey is actually the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine was foreshadowed, subtle and yet unexpected. It worked so well with what Star Wars is all about and Rey as a character. There is an underlining theme that your lineage and birth does not determine who you will and can become. It was a shocking twist, but one that made sense and tied questions together. Rey's father was Palpatine's son. Her parents left her intentionally on Jakku so she would be hidden and safe from the Emperor. It does pose an interesting question as to how and who with Palpatine had a son, as that is not explained, but we can forgive that in an already amazing and packed movie.

Snoke Wasn't Real

One of the biggest revelations of the movie was that Palpatine had been manipulating the rise of the first order since the very destruction of the empire. He created Snoke and had been speaking to Kylo Ren as numerous people for years. This answers nearly all of our questions from the last movie about why Snoke was seemingly so powerful and yet he magically showed up out of nowhere and no one knew about him. If you watch the movies in chronological order now, you can really see how Palpatine has manipulated the galaxy literally since the very beginning. It was ALWAYS him! In the prequels, we see him as a senator from Naboo and turn Anakin to the dark side. In the original trilogy, he was the all-powerful Emperor. It only makes sense that this last trilogy comes full circle with him trying to turn his own granddaughter and use her to return to power.

Rey and Ben

This last installment brought much relieve to most of the Reylo fans out there. Although we did not get much of an explaination as to why and how dyads occur, we do know that it creates a powerful connection through the force between two individuals. This has been building up since Rey and Kylo first started their force conversations in The Last Jedi. Unfortunately, we do not get to see much of a relationship since Ben dies saving Rey.

This movie truly represented what I had loved about Star Wars, and ended the saga in a respectful, thorough way. Although there is still a question or two, I believe they were as thorough as they possibly could be without a five hour movie. I remain a Disney and Star Wars fan.
