No Way Home Review

So here's the deal, there was a lot of lead up and hype to this movie and to be honest I was not only skeptical but I have very little hope that Sony and Marvel could pull off having a live action Spider Verse movie. I didn’t care for the previous two renditions of the web slinger and felt no reason to see them on the big screen again, more than that I didn’t want them to take away from Tom’s Spiderman. Well after seeing the film I am very happy to say that I was wrong and No Way Home was in fact the best live action spiderman movie that exists as well as being in my top 5 Marvel movies ever.

There’s lots of things in this film that I would like to talk about but let's start with how they used nostalgia, because that is something very very easy to screw up. Having the other 2 spider-men in this movie meant that Marvel needed to achieve a very difficult balancing act. How do we use nostalgia to enhance the story instead of killing it? Well not bringing in Andrew and Toby until the last act was a very good place to start, having all 3 from the beginning of the 2nd act would have been messy and it would have caused the story to stall, instead bringing them in for only the big bad was the best use of their characters.

2nd of all, everything that happened enhanced Tom’s Spiderman, he got to grow into being a leader and the other two guided and helped him but ultimately they were in his world working within his order. They all also had incredible chemistry and you can tell how much they all admire each other's version of the character.

Next, Aunt May’s death…her delivering the iconic line normally spoken by uncle Ben tied all of the Spideys together and gave Tom’s Peter the push he needed. Now a lot of the complaints about the MCU Spiderman (are all a bunch of BS but here we are…) were that we didn’t get an origin story, to which I say if you still need a Spiderman origin story that's on you, go do your own homework and come back. But what people fail to acknowledge is that we got a much more in depth and meaningful origin story then we got from the other two. No, we didn’t see him get bitten by a spider but we did see him want to be normal, struggle to do the right thing, be scared and overcome his fears, and be much more than just a friendly neighborhood Spiderman. The reason Tom’s Spiderman has the best films (I’m not saying he's the best Spiderman, though I believe he is and Stan Lee agrees with me) is because the MCU took their time in developing his character and his villains, the problem with Tobey and Andrew’s movies is that they were rushed, there was no development, there were villains shoehorned in with little to no explanation….and on top of that they were 30 but I digress….

Lastly the film gave you closure for both Tobey and Andrew’s stories. Andrew saving MJ was a beautiful moment that still didn’t take away from Tom’s story and allowed Andrew’s spiderman to heal.

Overall this movie was emotional and beautiful with incredible cinematography and impeccable writing. They truly could not have done better and I am so excited to see where they take Spiderman from here (I’m so so hoping for Gwen Stacy) now that he is truly on his own.
