Spider-Man: Brand New Day Shatters Box Office Records With a $927 Million Opening—Can It Reach $2 Billion?
Tom Holland’s fourth Spider-Man movie has delivered the second-biggest worldwide opening in cinema history, proving that audiences are far from finished with the web-slinger.

I honestly do not know how this is possible.
Before the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, even the most optimistic projections appeared to be predicting an enormous opening weekend. Some estimates suggested that the film could collect more than $500 million globally during its debut.
Even that number sounded unrealistic to me.
I believed the movie would probably open somewhere around $400 million worldwide. After all, very few movies earn $500 million during their entire theatrical run. Expecting one film to collect that amount in only a few days felt like unnecessary hype.
But Spider-Man: Brand New Day did not simply cross those projections.
It completely destroyed them.
The Tom Holland-led superhero movie reportedly earned an estimated $927 million worldwide during its opening weekend. That includes approximately $355 million from the United States and Canada and another $572 million from international markets. China alone contributed around $121 million.
To put that number into perspective, the movie reached within touching distance of $1 billion before its first Monday had even arrived.
The Second-Biggest Opening in Movie History
There is one important correction that needs to be made when discussing this record.
Avengers: Doomsday is not currently the number-one opening movie because it has not been released yet. It is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 18, 2026.
The number-one worldwide opening still belongs to Avengers: Endgame, which debuted with approximately $1.209 billion globally in 2019. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, with its $927 million launch, now holds the second position.
That makes the achievement even more remarkable.
Endgame was the conclusion of more than a decade of Marvel storytelling. It brought together almost every major MCU hero and followed the devastating cliffhanger of Avengers: Infinity War.
Brand New Day, meanwhile, is primarily a Spider-Man movie built around Peter Parker.
Yes, the Spider-Man name itself is a global brand. Yes, the Marvel Cinematic Universe contributed to the excitement. However, Tom Holland is still the central face of this historic opening.
Has Tom Holland Become the World’s Biggest Movie Star?
It would be an exaggeration to claim that the entire $927 million came only because of Tom Holland. Spider-Man was one of the most recognisable fictional characters in the world long before Holland started wearing the mask.
However, Holland deserves enormous credit for maintaining the popularity of the character.
His version of Peter Parker has appeared in multiple MCU blockbusters, while his three previous solo Spider-Man movies continuously expanded in scale and popularity. Spider-Man: No Way Home eventually earned around $1.9 billion worldwide despite not receiving a theatrical release in China.
The success of Brand New Day shows that audiences remain emotionally invested in Holland’s Spider-Man.
The movie did not need to depend completely on nostalgia or the return of multiple previous Spider-Men. Instead, it reportedly presents a more personal Peter Parker story set in a world where the people closest to him no longer remember who he is.
That emotional foundation may have helped the movie connect with audiences beyond the usual superhero spectacle.
Why Did Brand New Day Open So Big?
The success cannot be explained by one factor alone.
The first major reason is the goodwill created by No Way Home. That movie delivered nostalgia, emotion, action and one of the biggest cinematic events of the post-pandemic era. Many viewers entered Brand New Day expecting another unforgettable theatrical experience.
The second reason is Spider-Man’s universal popularity. Children, teenagers, comic-book readers and casual moviegoers can all connect with Peter Parker. He is powerful, but he is also lonely, confused and constantly struggling to balance responsibility with his personal life.
The third factor is positive audience reception.
The film opened with strong critical and audience responses, including an approximately 90% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, an even higher audience score and an “A” CinemaScore.
That matters because a huge opening only guarantees the first few days. Word of mouth determines what happens afterward.
Comic-Book Fans and Casual Audiences May React Differently
One possible challenge is that comic-book readers and casual Marvel viewers may experience the movie differently.
Dedicated Spider-Man fans appear to be appreciating the comic-accurate details, emotional references and character development. For viewers familiar with the source material, these elements may transform the film into something deeply personal.
Casual viewers who expected major multiverse surprises or direct connections to Avengers: Doomsday may feel differently. Some people may have purchased tickets expecting cameos, alternate universes or a massive MCU setup.
When a film opens with this much hype, it is impossible to satisfy every expectation.
However, the most encouraging sign for its future is that the movie seems to be making Spider-Man fans laugh, cry and emotionally reconnect with Peter Parker. That reaction can produce repeat viewings, which are essential for reaching the highest box-office milestones.
Can Spider-Man: Brand New Day Reach $2 Billion?
At this stage, $2 billion is a realistic possibility, but it is not guaranteed.
The film already has several advantages. It has started with $927 million, received positive reactions and opened strongly in China—an important market that No Way Home did not have.
However, its final total will depend on three major tests:
The first is the Monday drop. Opening weekends are powered by advance bookings and the most dedicated fans. Monday reveals how much demand remains once people return to work, school and their regular routines.
The second test will be the movie’s second weekend. A relatively controlled decline would suggest that positive word of mouth is reaching casual audiences.
The third factor is long-term competition. The film needs to maintain screens and public attention for several weeks rather than behaving like a front-loaded fan event.
Crossing $2 billion now appears possible. Reaching $3 billion and challenging the highest-grossing films of all time would be far more difficult. That would require exceptional repeat business and extraordinarily strong holds in almost every major market.
What Does This Mean for Avengers: Doomsday?
The success of Brand New Day has made expectations for Avengers: Doomsday even more extreme.
The upcoming Avengers movie brings together characters from multiple corners of Marvel, including the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men, with Robert Downey Jr. appearing as Doctor Doom. Marvel has confirmed its December 18, 2026 theatrical release.
If one Spider-Man movie can open with $927 million, an Avengers event with a massive ensemble cast could potentially challenge Endgame.
However, a $1.5 billion opening should not be treated as guaranteed. Endgame was supported by a unique combination of circumstances, including the cliffhanger of Infinity War and 11 years of continuous MCU storytelling.
Doomsday will need to create that same feeling of urgency.
If it ends with an emotionally devastating cliffhanger, Avengers: Secret Wars could become an even bigger event.
Could Rajamouli’s Varanasi Join the Global Box-Office Elite?
Hollywood is not the only industry preparing major cinematic events.
S.S. Rajamouli’s Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran, is scheduled for a worldwide release on April 7, 2027.
Rajamouli already earned worldwide recognition through Baahubali and RRR. The international response to RRRdemonstrated that global audiences are willing to embrace Indian cinema when the film is properly presented, distributed and promoted.
That does not automatically make $1 billion easy. Reaching that milestone requires an enormous number of screens, premium formats, extensive dubbing, strong international marketing and coordinated worldwide distribution.
But Varanasi may have something most Indian films do not possess: global recognition attached directly to its director.
Marketing it as “the next cinematic event from the director of RRR” could immediately create curiosity among audiences who discovered Rajamouli through streaming.
Final Thoughts
Spider-Man: Brand New Day earning $927 million during its worldwide opening is not simply another successful Marvel result.
It is a historic theatrical event.
The film has delivered the second-biggest global debut ever, placed Tom Holland at the centre of another box-office phenomenon and dramatically increased expectations for Avengers: Doomsday.
Its opening weekend is already legendary.
Now the real test begins.
Can it maintain strong weekday collections? Can it survive the second-weekend drop? Can positive word of mouth carry it beyond $2 billion? Or will its enormous fan-driven opening make the movie more front-loaded than expected?
Whatever happens next, one thing is certain: Spider-Man has once again reminded the film industry that Peter Parker remains one of the most powerful characters in global cinema.
How much do you think Spider-Man: Brand New Day will earn during its complete theatrical run—$1.7 billion, $2 billion or even more?
