My guilty pleasure is currently, His Dark Materials.

My guilty pleasure is currently, His Dark Materials. The highlights of lockdown is sitting down on the sofa at the end of a long day, hot brew in hand, and watching this series. It is based on the books by Phil Pullman. After watching season one, last year, I was quick to buy the books and read them. The books became a favorite on my shelf. The tv series follows the books very closely, and if anything, goes deeper into details.

The series follows the story of Lyra and her demon Pantalaimon. Lyra is an orphaned young girl who lives at Jordan College in Oxford. She is on a mission to discover the meaning of dust, which takes her on an epic adventure. On her quest, she meets extraordinary characters such as Azriel, Lorek Bernason, Lee Scoresby, Miss Coulter, and of course, Will. The series is visually stunning with a phenomenal cast and a theme song that you'll be humming all day. ^^^^SPOILERS AHEAD ^^^^^

What is a demon? A demon represents the physical form of the soul of a human. They can shapeshift into any animal. When a human and demon reach sexual maturity, their demons permanently settle in a form. I often wonder what my demon would settle as if I lived in the same world as Lyra. Shy like a guinea pig. Lonely like a wolf. Lethargic like a panda.

Roger Parslow

Roger is a kitchen boy at Jordan College and Lyra's best friend. His demon is named Sicilia. The four of them would often climb on the rooftops and explore Jordon college together. Roger is kidnapped by the general OBlation Board and taken to Bolvanger. Lyra rescues him, and they find Asriel together. Season one ends with the death of Roger at the hands of Asriel. His death is one of the saddest and most memorable of the series. Lyra is left with a hole in her heart and blames herself.

It was confirmed that the actor who plays Roger would be returning in the third season despite his death. People who have read the book will know what this means for his character.

Will Parry

Will Parry is introduced in the first season, but it isn't until the second season that his character becomes more involved in the plot, and we begin to fall for him. He replaces the void that Roger left. His father leaves when he is very young, and his mother develops a disease, which means Will often has to look after her. He accidentally commits manslaughter and finds himself in a different world where he meets Lyra. The pair go on many adventures together. He helps Lyra get her alethiometer back and become the bearer of the subtle knife; this is a knife that can cuts doors into different worlds. The season ends with Will reuniting with his father, but PLOT TWIST, his father is then killed. His father's death is different from the book, but the differences are for the better. Will buries his father. He puts on his father's jacket and walks off like a badass.

Marisa Coulter

Marisa Coulter is cold, cruel, and Lyra's mother. She is the most intriguing and horrifying antagonists I have ever seen on TV. Her demon is a golden monkey. His name is never mentioned, and he rarely speaks. She was married to a man but had an affair with Asriel, which resulted in the birth of Lyra. Miss Coulter worked at Bolvanger, where they experimented on splitting children and demons. She spends most of season two looking for Lyra and being a badass. In the final, she kidnaps her daughter.

The golden compass

Before the Tv series, there was a movie titled The golden compass. I remember watching the movie when I was younger and wondering if they would ever make a sequel, and they didn't. Not only that, but the movie doesn't cover the whole plot of the book like the series does. Rumour has it that this was done to give it a brighter ending, there were plans to make multiple movies, but this never happened.

It's clear that the tv series was on a budget as humans are often seen in the shot without demons. I noticed that touching between humans and demons is minimized or avoided.

The movie inspired the tv series heavily, and the comparison of some shots are similar or almost exact.

I am super excited for the third and final season of his dark materials. Season three is in the early stages of development, and filming isn't set until December 2021. I've read the books, so I know how it all plays out, but it'll be interesting to see how they adapt the tv series and if they make any other changes. I wonder if they'll make the book of dust a TV series, although I know Phil Pullman is still working hard on the final book in that series.
