School Daze & A Different World

If you're from the eighties like I am, you might be familiar with the movie School Daze. And you might be familiar with the series A Different World upon which a few of the same actors from School Daze starred in like Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Tisha Campbell, and Darryl M. Bell.

I think that, if you liked School Daze, you might like A Different World. For some people, it might be hard to see any relation between the two programs. However, they do have similarities worthy of consideration.

For starters, each show takes place at a college. And then there's the fact that they are each African American films with the characters of the shows mainly being African American. Each show focuses on promoting the success of the African American people. They focus on educating the world on African American issues and promote finding ways to fix those issues.

Each show aims to show a positive image of African American people while they did not neglect to show the reality of the evildoers among us.

School Daze had a lot to do with racism and self-hate while A Different World was a series that showed a much larger variety of circumstances faced by young, African American, people - mainly circumstances that young people of any race face. But it did not neglect to show the issue of racism. More than one episode dealt with that issue.

On School Daze light skin privilege and a barrier between light skinned Blacks and dark skinned Blacks was depicted, a barrier which included the feelings of superiority of the light skinned Blacks over the dark skinned Blacks. A Different World, mainly, showed African Americans of all complexions getting along in equality.

Another difference between the programs was that A Different World was a comedy while School Daze was a drama film; however, just as School Daze had it's scenes that might seem funny, there were many conflicts in A Different World. A Different World, while it steered towards positivity, did not leave out the reality of the harsh side of the world as it was a very knowledgeable show. It had many dramatic moments. It was a, perfect, depiction of real life. At the same time, School Daze had many scenes that promote optimism, and humor, while it dealt more with conflicts than the series, A Different World. It was largely based on conflicts.

Each show showed success of African Americans. Every student on each program had made it to college. And they were all, normally, on the way to completing college. They each had potential. They each had siezed their opportunity.

Also, the characters of these shows had personality; they had maturity; they had stability of character; they had confidence; they were outspoken.

And, both two shows showed, profound, friendships. They showed bonding between people who had common plights. A Different World was really good at showing love, and the, positive, results of loving relationships. It showed the, positive, results of honesty, and decent character. School Daze did the same in it's own way.

Both shows aimed at tearing apart at any honor offered to negative, trouble-making, people. This was done especially on School Daze as it depicted the results of the attitudes and ways of people with the tyrannical views of the light skinned group who looked down upon darker skinned Blacks. It, successfully, showed you how their ways even caused conflicts between the people of the same group. In one part of the movie, the group leader wanted to move on from one young woman to the next. He talked the young woman who he wanted to end his relationship with into having sex with one of the other members of the sorrority that he lead. When she did, he accused her of being unfaithful, and someone who couldn't have appreciated their relationship that much if she could do it whether he told her to or not. No matter how much she pleaded, he went through with his plan for getting rid of her. It seemed that his coldness had a lot to do with his quest for superiority. The first young woman no longer fed his honor; the new young woman would. So, he rid himself of the first woman like she was trashed now that she no longer pleased him. What she experienced went along with being part of that group.

So, if you have watched School Daze, give A Different World a try; and, with that, I end my story.
