Satluj Movie Review: A Brutal Punjab 95 Story That Shakes You Without Violence

Diljit Dosanjh and Arjun Rampal deliver a powerful, dark thriller based on one of Punjab’s most painful chapters.

Do you think Dhurandhar will be the most controversial film of 2025-26? Maybe not. That film at least focused on showing a version of Pakistan’s reality. But there is another film that goes much deeper and darker — a film that exposes one of the most painful chapters of Punjab’s history.

I am talking about Satluj, the film that was earlier known as Punjab 95. A movie that reportedly faced massive censorship issues, with demands for around 120 cuts before its release. Because of these controversies, the film remained stuck for nearly three years. But now, after all the struggles, this brutal piece of cinema has finally arrived on OTT with its identity changed.

And let me tell you one thing — this is not a film that needs excessive gunshots or action sequences to show violence. The violence here is psychological. It enters your mind slowly and leaves wounds without physically touching you.

Satluj is a film about death, but more importantly, it is about the feeling of helplessness that comes when humanity disappears. After watching it, I had a similar heavy feeling that I experienced while watching Sardar Udham. But there, the hatred was against the British. Here, the tragedy is much more painful because the enemies are people from within.

The film takes us into a period when Punjab was facing extreme turmoil. A time when the battle between police and militants became so intense that innocent people were trapped between both sides. The story begins with Jaswant Singh, who starts searching for his missing relative. But soon, he realizes that this is not just his personal struggle. An entire state is drowning in fear, bloodshed, and unanswered questions.

One of the strongest aspects of Satluj is its atmosphere. Around 90% of the movie is shot in darkness, and that darkness itself becomes a powerful symbol. It represents a society where everything is getting consumed by fear, corruption, and violence.

The film becomes even more disturbing when the person searching for others suddenly disappears himself. Was he lost? Or was he deliberately erased? The answer forms the heart of this terrifying story.

The arrival of Arjun Rampal changes the entire direction of the movie. The narrative transforms into an intense investigation thriller with a police-versus-CBI angle. Arjun brings a completely different energy and proves once again why intelligent characters are sometimes more powerful than action heroes.

His performance is one of the biggest strengths of the film. The way he controls every scene with his expressions and mind games is outstanding. After watching this movie, you realize that a smart, layered character can be far more exciting than simple violence.

But the biggest surprise package is Diljit Dosanjh. Many people are calling this one of his best performances, and they are absolutely right. There is one particular scene where the truth and pain on his face are so powerful that you immediately connect with him emotionally.

After Chamkila and now Satluj, Diljit continues proving that he is one of the most underrated actors in Indian cinema. Give him the right role, and he delivers something unforgettable.

The supporting cast also deserves huge appreciation. The negative characters are played with such intensity that their presence creates genuine fear. The background music, the silence, and the performances together create an atmosphere that stays with you even after the movie ends.

However, this is not an easy watch. This is a heavy film. It does not entertain you in the traditional sense. Instead, it forces you to confront uncomfortable truths and emotions. Some scenes are so painful that you feel completely helpless while watching them.

The makers have created every moment with honesty and courage. Every actor, every scene, and every frame feels carefully designed to tell this difficult story.

Satluj is not a movie for everyone. It requires patience and emotional strength. But if you appreciate serious, realistic, and powerful cinema, this film deserves your attention.

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

If you thought the violence of Dhurandhar was brutal, then Satluj will shock you in a different way. It does not scream. It does not create noise. It simply shows a painful reality and lets that truth destroy your peace.

A brave piece of cinema that deserves respect, not censorship.
