Sahan Ending Explained: Nusrat’s Fight Against Abuse, Control and a Painful Marriage (Spoilers)

Sahan is a powerful domestic drama about control, emotional abuse, financial struggle and a woman slowly finding the courage to stand up for herself. At the centre of the story are Imran and his wife Nusrat, whose marriage has become a place of fear rather than love.

As the story progresses, we understand that Nusrat has spent years accepting Imran’s anger and controlling behaviour. But when the future of her unborn daughter is threatened, she finally reaches a point where remaining silent is no longer possible.

Imran and Nusrat’s Troubled Marriage

The movie begins with Imran sleeping inside his house. He suddenly feels as though a little girl is calling him “Papa.” Soon after, someone knocks on his door, but Imran refuses to answer.

We learn that Imran once worked as a television actor. However, after an accident badly damaged one of his legs, he has struggled to find acting work. A rod has been inserted into his injured leg, making it difficult for him to walk properly.

Imran lives with his wife, Nusrat. Their relationship is deeply unhealthy. Nusrat appears afraid of him, and her entire world has effectively been limited to the walls of their home.

Imran also has serious financial problems. Around a year earlier, he borrowed ₹1 lakh from a man named Pandey. Pandey repeatedly visits the house demanding repayment, but Imran avoids him and keeps promising that the money will be returned later.

Despite having no stable income, Imran refuses to allow Nusrat to work outside the home.

Nusrat Discovers She Is Pregnant

Imran begins to suspect that Nusrat might be pregnant and gives her a pregnancy test.

The result is positive.

Nusrat also tells Imran that her mother has been unwell and she wants to visit her. Instead of showing compassion, Imran humiliates her and refuses to understand why seeing her mother matters so much.

By the time Imran finally books a flight for Nusrat, her mother has already died.

Even then, Imran shows little sympathy and tells her to travel because otherwise the flight ticket will be wasted.

Nusrat eventually leaves to visit her family and later returns home.

Rohit and Riya See How Nusrat Is Being Treated

Imran’s close friend Rohit is a casting director. Rohit visits the couple and advises Imran to allow Nusrat to work.

Rohit explains that his own wife, Riya, also works and that two incomes help them manage their household.

Later, Rohit and Riya visit again for Nusrat’s birthday.

Riya notices how restricted Nusrat’s life has become. She encourages Nusrat to leave the house, find employment and experience some independence.

When Riya speaks directly to Imran about allowing Nusrat to work, he reacts badly. He says he does not want Nusrat earning money and eventually believing she has authority over him.

Riya openly criticises his attitude. She tells him that he does not understand what marriage means and that he treats Nusrat more like a servant than a wife.

After Rohit and Riya leave, Imran turns his anger toward Nusrat.

Why Imran Resents Nusrat

The story later reveals another disturbing part of their past.

At one point during an argument, Imran had angrily said “talaq” three times to Nusrat. After calming down, he wanted to continue living with her.

However, Imran’s father followed his understanding of religious rules and forced Nusrat into a halala arrangement involving an elderly cleric before she could return to Imran.

Nusrat did not want this.

She was pressured by the family and felt unable to oppose them.

Imran never emotionally recovered from what happened, but instead of recognising Nusrat as another victim of the situation, he directed his resentment toward her and repeatedly used the incident to humiliate her.

The movie also shows that Imran carries anger toward his father because his father controlled many important decisions in his life, including his education and career.

Ironically, Imran has now recreated a similar pattern of control inside his own marriage.

Imran Wants Nusrat to Abort Her Daughter

After Nusrat returns home, Imran tells her to find out whether the unborn child is a boy or a girl.

When they learn that the baby is a girl, Imran demands an abortion.

This is not the first time.

Nusrat had previously become pregnant with a girl, and Imran had pressured her into ending that pregnancy as well.

This time, however, Nusrat does not want to lose her daughter.

Imran attempts to justify his demand by claiming that if they have a daughter, she may suffer the same kind of life as Nusrat.

Instead of changing the environment that caused Nusrat’s suffering, he wants to prevent the child from being born.

Nusrat Finally Starts Working

Eventually, Imran allows Nusrat to take a job at a clothing factory connected to Riya’s uncle.

For Nusrat, simply leaving the house feels like freedom.

Working gives her confidence, independence and exposure to a world outside Imran’s control.

But Imran becomes even more insecure.

He constantly reminds Nusrat that he is still “the man of the house” and warns her not to become arrogant just because she has started earning money.

The situation becomes worse when Pandey again arrives asking for his money.

Nusrat learns about the debt and decides to solve the problem herself. She mortgages some of her jewellery and repays Pandey completely.

Instead of thanking her, Imran becomes furious.

He sees Nusrat making an important financial decision as a challenge to his authority.

He violently attacks her.

Despite everything, Nusrat still goes back to work.

Imran Gets an Acting Role

Eventually, Rohit finds a role for Imran.

The part is that of a retired disabled colonel, and because it is expected to continue for a long period, Imran finally has the possibility of regular acting work again.

Imran is delighted.

But almost immediately, he tells Nusrat that she must quit her job because he can now earn money.

Nusrat refuses.

She explains that she can manage both her job and the home.

For Imran, however, the issue is no longer money. It is control.

Nusrat’s growing independence threatens him.

Their relationship deteriorates further, and Imran even blames Rohit and Riya for changing Nusrat’s thinking.

He gets into a physical fight with Rohit, believing that Riya is responsible for encouraging Nusrat to become independent.

Even after the fight, Rohit does not take the acting opportunity away from Imran because he still considers him a friend.

Nusrat Makes One Final Deal

Nusrat eventually tells Imran that she is prepared to leave her job.

But she has one condition.

She wants to keep her baby.

Nusrat clearly tells Imran that she will not have another abortion.

Imran is shocked to discover that she has still not ended the pregnancy.

During the argument, he once again uses the painful halala incident against her.

This time Nusrat refuses to remain silent.

She tells him that she never willingly went through that experience. She had been sent there by others and remained quiet because she kept hoping that one day her life would improve.

But now she understands that nothing will change unless she changes it herself.

Most importantly, Nusrat decides that her daughter will not grow up living the same life she did.

Sahan Ending Explained: Why Does Nusrat Attack Imran?

The final confrontation represents the moment when years of fear finally turn into resistance.

After Nusrat refuses to abort her daughter, Imran becomes furious.

He attempts to hurt Nusrat’s stomach, threatening the life of the unborn child.

For Nusrat, this changes everything.

She is no longer protecting only herself.

She is protecting her daughter.

Nusrat pushes Imran away. Because of his damaged leg, he falls and struggles to get back up.

Nusrat then picks up a stick and begins hitting him.

The scene is not simply about physical retaliation. It represents everything Nusrat has suppressed for years—fear, humiliation, grief, anger and helplessness—finally coming out.

Outside the house, Navratri celebrations are taking place.

The symbolism is important.

The story visually connects Nusrat’s transformation with the fierce power associated with Goddess Kali. After spending most of her married life frightened and powerless, Nusrat finally confronts the man who controlled her.

She then walks out of the house.

What Happens to Nusrat After Leaving Imran?

The ending confirms that Nusrat does not return to her old life.

She divorces Imran.

She keeps her job and raises her daughter herself.

Instead of sacrificing her independence again, Nusrat builds a new life where she can work, make her own decisions and provide her daughter with the childhood she wanted her to have.

This is the real victory of the ending.

Nusrat does not simply escape Imran. She breaks the cycle.

What Does the Ending of Sahan Mean?

Sahan is ultimately a story about generational control.

Imran hated his father for controlling his life, yet eventually became controlling himself.

He complained about the traditions and decisions that damaged his marriage, yet repeatedly punished Nusrat for something she had never chosen.

Nusrat initially believes that patience and silence might eventually improve her marriage.

They do not.

Her transformation begins when she starts working and realises that another life is possible.

Her unborn daughter then becomes the final reason she needs to stop accepting abuse.

When Imran threatens the child, Nusrat understands that continuing to tolerate him would mean allowing the same cycle to continue into another generation.

By leaving, divorcing Imran and raising her daughter independently, Nusrat ends that cycle.

The movie also states at the end that its story is based on a true incident, which makes its themes of domestic control and the struggle for independence even more disturbing.

Sahan ends with Nusrat finally choosing freedom—not only for herself, but also for the daughter whose future she refuses to sacrifice.
