Revisiting You

Anticipating Season 4

So I’ve actually watched the first two seasons of You multiple times, I remember binging the entire first season in 1 day. Now obviously the quality of these seasons fluctuates as they all actually have very different tones. That said, I just wanted to revisit this show before we get season 4.

The biggest thing I remember from season 1 is the internet reaction to Beck…there was this really weird trend of hating on her for existing and excusing a literal murderer's behavior.

“It's like you’ve never seen a horror movie or the news”

Look victim blaming is never it, HOWEVER living in a first story apartment with street facing windows AND NOT HAVING CURTAINS as a woman in New York is quite possibly the stupidest thing I have ever heard in my goddamn life. You are making yourself stalker bait and that point and it's very hard to feel bad for you, so I guess I get the internet reaction a little bit.

Also considering that the initial fanbase for this show was largely women I think it says a lot about society in general that the knee jerk reaction was to excuse Joe’s actions and blame Beck. This reaction is exactly why it's so damaging when people (especially women) are infatuated with true crime and real life serial killers. If you genuinely find comfort and entertainment in that then you need some serious help and we should find you a qualified mental health professional. That said fictional shows like You are a good outlet and safe medium for those who do like crime shows. It is very different then being infatuated with or attracted to actual murderers.

Joe calling his stalking “research” is a great way to let us know that he’s psychotic and delusional pretty quick.

Joe kidnapping Benji was so easy because his arrogant ass is so stupid. Joe is clearly nuts but at least he's smart, that may be the appeal.

Beck feeling trapped by her graduate professor seems to be glossed over, and the victim blaming is also just ignored.

“Who wants to kill people?” - well buddy you do.

Like we’re supposed to somehow buy into the fact that his love for books makes him less of a psychopath. Somehow makes him more relatable. I like books too, a guy that reads isn’t so rare we need to date sociopaths ladies.

The flashbacks I guess are supposed to make us feel for him as if him having childhood trauma somehow excuses his murdering, it doesn’t.

Beck and Joe actually start a relationship, now we hear Beck’s internal voice. I will say the use of narration in the media mostly sucks, it's almost always awful but they make me not hate it completely.

There are a lot of internet complaints about the length of streaming service shows and the lack of filler but streaming services are the savior of screenwriting. I would argue that You is one of the best examples of that.

Joe being appalled by Peach’s obsession with Beck is actually hilarious, like he hasn’t been doing the same thing, excellent use of irony.

“How the hell am I supposed to be great with you being gone if you're actually gone?” - I mean I guess we’ve all felt like that after a break up.

Joe’s kill count for S1 : 5

Season 2

I love how they tried to do a redemption story for Joe, trying to make us forget that he's a psychopath. The funny part about that is it actually works. As far as I’m concerned he didn’t really kill anyone this season, no one remembers Jasper and Henderson was wholeheartedly justified.

The entire season Joe considering Forty and Candace crazy is so funny, the irony in this season is so great. To me it is by far the best season.

Kill Count S2:

Love - 3

Joe - 2

Season 3

Brings yet again a different tone, I do love the commentary in every season in season 1 they made fun of pseudointellectualism, in season 2 it was the adulteration of actual cultural customs into random homeopathic living by privileged white people, and in season 3 it was those with holier than thou attitudes that hide under the guise of health and parenting.

I liked that this season gave both Joe and Love a separate extra-marital love interest. They are equally as crazy, but the narration is through Joe so you are forced to hear him say that she is nuts like he’s totally innocent. Unfortunately the internet seemed to agree with that totally detached assessment. I fully remember people calling Love crazy as if Joe’s actions weren’t exactly the same.

The funniest part of this show is that Sherri and Kerry are largely insufferable through most of the season, but when they are trapped in a murder cage together they prove themselves to be an actually sweet and solid couple.

The ending is just Joe and Love out-crazing each other, unfortunately Joe won, because it's his show but having Love for another season would have been so much better.

Kill Count:

Love: 1

Joe: 1

Both: 1 (They both get the blame for Gill)

We will see what season 4 holds come February!
