Netflix signed director Zack Snyder to an exclusive first look deal for his production company The Stone Quarry. The deal is for first look and new IPs designed to bring in audiences for the streamer.

The first of those dropped last summer with Army of the Dead which was met with relative success and has since spawned a prequel and now has a planned universe coming to life. Snyder was having fun behind the camera and within the creative writing process. You could easily see his passion for his craft coming through as he created the most unique zombie film of the last decade. Love him or hate him he does things his own way and as a creative myself you love to see it.

His latest film which is not due on the streamer until 2023 is called Rebel Moon. It was a scrapped Star Wars concept about a planet on the outer edge of the galaxy that is about to be taken over for its resources and their last ditch effort to fight back. It is a really cool concept but Star Wars is basically just about one family and that continuing narrative. That is a story for another day because Rebel Moon now being an original IP under Zack Snyder has unlimited potential to be a much needed rival for Star Wars. The kicker is that it lands on Netflix which is also a rival to Disney in the war for subscribers. If Rebel Moon ends up a smashing victory for Netflix it could be a double slap in the face for Disney.

Fast Forward now as the concept has been known for months but casting was still very much in the dark aside from lead actress Sofia Boutella being cast. Well today the levee broke and the floodgates of casting opened up. Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond, The Kings Man) Bae Doona (Sense 8, Cloud Atlast) and Ray Fisher (Zack Snyders Justice League) were announced. Hunnam has the most star power among these 4 but these are very solid choices. It is nice to see Ray Fisher reuniting with the man who stood by his performance. Ray Fisher likely became a mainstay in future Snyder projects as it was noted Snyder wanted from the Army but Fisher was already booked.

Fisher is playing a character known as Blood Axe who is a rebel fighter brought into help fight against the evil Tyrant Belisarius. Hounsou stars as General Titus, a character of unknown allegiances. All of this sounds super badass and very much in line with the heavy themes Snyder likes to incorporate into his movies. It seems like Ray Fisher as Blood Axe will be in some of the movie's more violent encounters as his name definitely does not invoke the thought of peace.

Snyder has big plans for the drama over the eight month shooting schedule. It is going to be a large scale movie and given Snyders track record will most likely be talked about all the way through production. Snyder is a divisive film maker who most people either admire or despise. Zack Snyders Justice League is the most talked about movie of his career and the most unified fans have been when it comes to see it for the masterpiece that it is. Compared with the studio botched version it stands head and shoulders above.

Netflix has given him way more creative freedom then he has been allotted previously so it should result in yet another immersive world with plenty of sequel, prequel and spin off potential. 2023 cannot come soon enough. Perhaps we will see a trailer by the end of 2022 which will only serve to hype the film that much more.
