Are you ready to re-enter The Matrix?

The Wachowski's hit film series is set to be rebooted, according to reports, and Zak Penn, the writer behind X2 and Pacific Rim, is said to be in talks to pen it. Warner Bros is apparently considering a structure similar to what's been seen with the Star Wars series lately, so there are a wealth of possibilities as to what could occur.

Lana and Lilly Wachowski wrote and directed the wildly popular series of films before their respective gender transitions, and were credited as Larry and Andy Wachowski, or The Wachowski Brothers. The initial film in the series scored $460 million at the global box office, with the sequels - The Matrix Reloadedand The Matrix Revolutions- going on to snag $742.1 million and $427 million respectively. The sisters used their admiration of Japanese anime and martial arts films as a whole as they filmed The Matrix series of films.

The series also made use of bullet time effects; this is where the heightened perception of certain characters is shown by having the action in a shot progress in slow-motion while the camera's viewpoint seems to continue throughout the scene in normal speed. This sort of effect has been used in films such as X-Men: Days Of Future Past, when the superspeed of Quicksilver allowed him to see things in "normal speed" while his colleagues appeared to be moving in extreme slow motion.

Producer Joel Silver was brought into The Matrix film fairly early on, and ended up doing much of the speaking for The Wachowskis, as they were notoriously closemouthed when it came to talking to the media.

The Wachowskis are not involved in the project as yet, but there is hope that they will offer their blessing for it. Silver apparently came forward with some ideas for another film in the franchise, and film star Keanu Reeves has said that he would be game to don Neo's leathers once more if The Wachowskis were involved in the project. It is possible that a project set in the universe of The Matrix but involving different characters could go forward, though. Everything at this point is at the discussion stage, where nothing has been completely committed to and ideas continue to be generated by all sides of the potential project.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, there have also been discussions about the potential for a project involving a young Morpheus. Michael B. Jordan is being considered for the lead role, and while everything is reportedly in the discussions stage, Silver has already said that he would not be involved heavily in any Matrix project, though it is probable that he will be involved at some level in a Matrix reboot.

This doesn't come as a big shocker, however; Silver sold his interest in The Matrix franchise to Warner Bros in 2012. Warner Bros would likely be concerned about any involvement that Silver would have in anything to do with a Matrix-style reboot; Silver has a reputation for budgetary excess and his relationship with The Wachowskis - some have seen Silver as the "mouthpiece" of the siblings - is infamous and might make Warner Bros a little gun-shy about pursuing anything where Silver could be heavily involved.

The Matrix film series stars - Keanu Reeves (Neo), Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus) and Carrie-Ann Moss (Trinity) - have yet to comment on the possibilities that could emerge as a result of any potential Matrix reboot. However, news about a potential reboot of the cyberpunk classic The Matrix will doubtless set fans of The Matrix chasing through the internet for further clues about the progress of such a project.
