Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Rao Bahadur, including the complete ending and all final twists.

Rao Bahadur is not simply a story about a dying king, a mysterious child, or a disputed DNA report. At its heart, it is a dark psychological drama about suspicion, inherited prejudice, toxic pride, and the dangerous obsession with continuing a family bloodline.

The movie follows Ramappa Rao Bahadur, a powerful aristocrat who has everything a person could desire. Yet he is unable to live peacefully or even die naturally. His body is suffering from terminal liver cancer, but despite doctors predicting that he has only a few months left, Ramappa continues to survive.

The reason is not medical. Ramappa is waiting for the answer to one question: Was Kusumappa really his biological son?

Why Is Kusumappa Trapped in the Portrait?

The movie opens with the disturbing image of a young boy trapped inside a portrait. He attempts to escape, but the roots of a tree grab him and pull him back.

The boy is Kusumappa, Ramappa’s younger son, who died seven years earlier. His body was buried beneath a tree near the family palace. The supernatural opening suggests that Kusumappa’s soul has not found peace because the emotional wounds responsible for his death remain unresolved.

A strange insect then emerges from his grave and enters Ramappa’s head. This can be understood as a visual representation of guilt and suspicion taking control of Ramappa’s mind.

From that moment, Ramappa behaves irrationally. He talks to people who are not present, screams Kusumappa’s name and insists that his dead son has removed his soul and locked it inside a bottle.

Whether these events are genuinely supernatural or products of Ramappa’s collapsing mind is deliberately left unclear.

Ramappa and Renuka’s Marriage

The story moves into the past, showing Ramappa as a young man who rejected royal traditions. He did not want to marry, rule the estate or produce an heir. Instead, he wanted to live freely without being controlled by rituals, caste divisions or social expectations.

When Ramappa’s father, Siddappa, becomes seriously ill, Ramappa returns to the palace. There he meets Renuka, a nurse appointed to look after Siddappa.

Ramappa falls in love with her and proposes marriage, but Renuka initially rejects him because she is already in love with someone else. However, after Ramappa accepts his position as the new ruler, Dr. Achari convinces Renuka to marry him.

The irony is that Ramappa begins as a man who questions tradition but eventually becomes completely controlled by it. His ancestors and the pressure to continue the royal bloodline transform him into the very person he once opposed.

Why Did Ramappa Reject Kusumappa?

Ramappa and Renuka have two sons: Lavana and Kusumappa.

Ramappa openly loves Lavana, but Kusumappa is born with a much darker complexion. Instead of treating both children equally, Ramappa begins suspecting that Kusumappa is another man’s child.

His obsession with skin colour and biological purity destroys the family.

Ramappa repeatedly humiliates Kusumappa, refuses to use his photograph for the family biscuit business and treats him as an unwanted outsider. He also abuses Renuka because he believes she has betrayed him.

Kusumappa grows up watching his father love Lavana while rejecting him. Even his brother excludes him from activities because he is younger.

Eventually, Kusumappa becomes convinced that he has no place in the family.

How Did Kusumappa Really Die?

Kusumappa’s death was not simply an accidental drowning.

While Lavana and his friends are playing cricket near the pond, Kusumappa asks to join them. After being refused once again, he walks into the water and takes his own life.

Ramappa did not physically push Kusumappa into the pond, but his cruelty pushed the child toward death.

This is the real source of Ramappa’s suffering. After Kusumappa dies, Renuka blames Ramappa and locks herself inside a room. She takes a vow of silence and refuses to speak to anyone for seven years.

Ramappa also understands that his behaviour caused the tragedy. He begins drinking heavily, develops cancer and becomes mentally unstable. However, one question continues tormenting him: what if Kusumappa really was his son?

Why Does Ramappa Dig Up Kusumappa’s Grave?

Ramappa becomes obsessed with obtaining a DNA test.

Dr. Achari explains that DNA testing cannot be conducted without a biological sample and legal permission. Ramappa therefore lies to Lavana, claiming that Kusumappa appeared in his dream and asked to be buried according to royal customs.

The grave is opened, and Ramappa secretly removes a tooth, a finger bone and part of a rib from Kusumappa’s skeleton.

When Achari refuses to arrange the test, Ramappa accuses him of being Kusumappa’s real father. Lavana overhears their argument and begins suspecting Achari as well.

However, the DNA test still cannot legally proceed without an official criminal investigation.

Who Is Michael, and Why Does He Accuse Ramappa?

A man named Michael suddenly arrives with the police and claims that Ramappa purchased his infant son many years earlier for ₹100 before eventually killing him.

Michael claims that Kusumappa was actually his child.

Lavana rejects the accusation, explaining that Kusumappa drowned in front of the family. Nevertheless, Michael’s complaint turns the matter into a criminal case. A forensic team receives permission to examine Kusumappa’s remains and collect DNA samples.

Ramappa is told that the report will arrive in two weeks. He enters his unusual sleep-like state and remains unconscious until the result is ready.

Rao Bahadur Ending Explained: Was Kusumappa Ramappa’s Son?

In the courtroom, the DNA report finally reveals the truth:

Kusumappa was not Michael’s child. He was Ramappa’s biological son.

The child Ramappa rejected, humiliated and indirectly drove toward death was his own flesh and blood.

After hearing the result, Ramappa feels an enormous sense of relief. The question that kept him alive for years has finally been answered. He accepts the truth and peacefully dies.

Ramappa’s inability to die can therefore be interpreted symbolically. His body had already surrendered, but his guilt and uncertainty would not allow his mind to let go. Once Kusumappa’s identity is confirmed, Ramappa no longer has a reason to remain alive.

Was Dr. Achari Kusumappa’s Father?

No, Achari was not Kusumappa’s biological father.

The movie reveals that Michael’s complaint was part of Achari’s plan. Because Ramappa and Lavana had accused him of fathering Kusumappa, Achari wanted the DNA test to prove his innocence.

He hired Michael to make a false accusation against Ramappa. The complaint forced the case into court, allowing the forensic examination to happen legally.

Achari’s manipulation succeeds. The report proves that Kusumappa belonged to Ramappa and clears Achari’s name.

However, the film still has two final revelations left.

The First Final Twist: Lavana Was Not Ramappa’s Son

After Ramappa dies, Renuka approaches his body and reveals the truth she had hidden for years.

Before marrying Ramappa, Renuka had been in love with another man and was already pregnant. Achari pressured her into marrying Ramappa before properly listening to her confession.

That unborn child was Lavana.

Therefore, Lavana—the fair-skinned elder son whom Ramappa loved, protected and proudly accepted as his heir—was not biologically his.

Meanwhile, Kusumappa—the darker-skinned child Ramappa rejected—was his real biological son.

This revelation completely reverses Ramappa’s beliefs. His judgement was based entirely on appearance, prejudice and suspicion, yet every conclusion he reached was wrong.

The Final Twist: Ramappa Was Also Adopted

Achari then reveals an even greater secret.

Ramappa himself was not Siddappa’s biological son.

Siddappa’s wife and newborn child had died, leaving him without an heir. Desperate to continue the royal lineage, Siddappa adopted another baby and raised him as his own son.

That adopted child was Ramappa.

This means the supposedly pure royal bloodline Ramappa spent his life protecting did not even run through his own body.

His entire identity was constructed around a lie.

What Does the Ending of Rao Bahadur Really Mean?

The ending exposes the absurdity of Ramappa’s obsession with biological inheritance.

He destroyed Kusumappa because he believed blood determined belonging. However:

  • The son he proudly accepted was not biologically his.

  • The son he rejected was biologically his.

  • Ramappa himself was not biologically connected to the father whose dynasty he tried to protect.

The movie’s central message is that doubt is the real demon.

Ramappa’s suspicion becomes more destructive than any supernatural curse. It destroys his marriage, emotionally tortures his wife, kills his relationship with Kusumappa and ultimately consumes his entire life.

The portrait, the grave, the tree roots and the strange visions represent the past refusing to remain buried. Kusumappa cannot escape because Ramappa has never accepted responsibility for what happened.

Final Verdict

Rao Bahadur ends with one of the most ironic family revelations imaginable. Ramappa spends his life deciding who deserves to carry his blood, only for the film to reveal that blood was never the foundation of his family in the first place.

Kusumappa did not need a DNA report to become Ramappa’s son. He needed love, acceptance and protection while he was alive.

Ramappa discovers the truth, but he discovers it too late.

That is what makes the ending so tragic: the DNA result gives Ramappa peace, but it can never return the childhood, dignity or life that Kusumappa lost.
