Ranking Films of 2022

Okay so 2022 ended up being an amazing year for movies, I’ve decided to rank them, now this list isn’t actually in any particular order. All movies with the same number rating are tied with each other. Most movies that got a half a point off because of rewatchability, that said you have to be in a very specific moon to rewatch those films and therefore they got a slightly lower ranking. Now for context the only films in history that I have ever given a 10/10 are the Lord of the Rings films (all of them), and The Princess Bride. Now all I think this list proves is that I need to raise my standards, which is really saying something because I am very specific and very judgy about my movies, so I am in fact going to be a little harsher going into 2023.

Black Panther 10/10

A beautiful portrayal of grief and loss, it did not feel like a Marvel movie which is most definitely why some Marvel heads didn’t like it, but they were wrong. The movie was perfect and beautiful.

Devotion 10/10

Another movie I would change exactly nothing about. It was a touching tribute to a great man and a lovely depiction of male friendship.

The Inspection 9.5/10

This is the first of a series of films that gets a half a point off for rewatchability. The cast and crew was incredible, sweet and inspiring. This film was necessary to change the industry.

A Man Called Otto 9.5/10

A film that made me laugh, cry, and leave feeling so many emotions I truly can’t remember having such an emotional response to a film.

The Invitation 9.5/10

My now favorite Dracula adaptation, this one is very re-watchable and only lost half a point because I’m very stingy with the perfect movie ranking.

Everything Everywhere All At Once 9.5/10

This one also only lost half a point because I’m stingy because this was definitely one of the best films of the year. Obviously some films on my list are a matter of opinion and taste, but not liking this one isn’t even an opinion that you're allowed to have. It’s brilliant, groundbreaking and truly incredible.

Banshees of Inisherin 9.5/10

I felt so many things about this movie, this is certainly a matter of taste. If you were looking for action, or romance this movie ain't it but if you like character studies and real human emotion then this film is brilliant.

Pearl 9.5/10

Incredible movie, with an intriguing story told in a tight hour and a half. The acting and storytelling was sublime and this is definitely a film to rewatch.

Armageddon Time 9.5/10

Also a very good character study, this one was an artistic commentary on race, friendship and frankly being the only artist in a family.

Babylon 9/10

Something wonderful that came out of the pandemic is that artists and filmmakers had all this pent up creative energy that resulted in beautiful movies about movies. Babylon was incredible and also one of the best films of the year.

The Whale 9/10

Brenden Fraser was incredible, as was the story. It wasn’t wholly my taste which is why I took a point off, but overall still a very good film.

Bros 9/10

Incredible, funny, loving and one of the best rom-coms that we’ve seen in a while. It got a lot of flack not for the actual quality of the movie but because for no reason at all people don’t like Billy Eichner. It was a film the LGBTQ community needed to support yet they refused based on nothing.

Don’t Worry Darling 8/10

An entire point was removed for Harry Styles “acting” alone, another point because though the story was good there were certain scenes that could have been executed better.

Amsterdam 7/10

Now we are starting to get into the more good to mediocre movies. Amsterdam would have gotten a higher score if it trimmed its fat a little bit. The third act could have been about 20 minutes shorter and if it had been it would have earned an extra point, another half a point if Ms. T-Swift would have been replaced by an actual actress. I love the woman but she can not act to save her life.

Smile 6.5/10

Great concept, good horror movie, bad ending. Had it ended 10 minutes sooner it would have been brilliant but it just kept going when it didn’t need to therefore shooting all its themes in the foot.

The Menu 6/10

Great commentary, not exactly re-watchable. Cinematography and acting was great.

TAR 6/10

An incomplete character study that felt like a first draft and was only saved by Cate Blanchette’s acting.

Triangle of Sadness 5/10

A film that would have been a brilliant satire if it had understood itself. It was an incoherent mess with few redeeming qualities.

Multiverse of Madness 3/10

Bad for a Marvel movie, bad for a stand alone movie, just bad. Michael Waldron should be banned from screenwriting…and talking.

Black Adam - It is a movie

It's ranking says it all.

Now there are some films that we didn’t get to see and therefore I can not genuinely tell you where they fall in the ranking; The Fablemen’s (I have only heard good things), Broker (We really wanted to see this but it was in theaters for all of 2 seconds), Avatar: The Way of Water (Pretty pictures does not a good movie make…), The Woman King (just didn’t get to it, heard mixed reviews), and Knives Out: Glass Onion (only heard good things, will watch and review anyway).

In 2023 we will definitely be seeing more movies then we did last year, but I think we hit the most important ones. Can’t wait to see what kind of movies we will get this year but with current releases it is shaping up to be as good if not better then 2022 was for the film industry.
