Ranking Disney Sequels

By Alexandrea CallaghanPublished 11 months ago 4 min read

Okay so a lot of Disney animated sequels were straight to DVD experiences and significantly less effort was put into them. However some of them are great nostalgic watches and have incredible music (which is how I judge all disney movies anyway). So here we go. I am going to rank all of Disney’s animated sequels from worst to best.

Atlantis: Milo’s Return

In absolutely dead last we have Atlantis: Milo’s Return. Now I feel like I have to explain this one. Though it might not be the worst individual movie I feel like it had the furthest quality drop. The original was a perfect, flawless, underrated masterpiece and the second one was…not. Now it’s hard to live up to just how incredible the first one was but the sequel is really very disappointing in comparison.

Fox and the Hound 2

Here starts an entire section of bottom tier movies that are terrible because the subject matter did not want, require or take well to a sequel. The “let's go back in time” brand of sequels are also a terrible idea. We already saw their story…we do not need it expanded upon.

Bambi 2

Number 2 on the who asked for this list ....unnecessary and takes away from the original story.

Brother Bear 2

Same thing dude, not sure why this was a Disney trend but not everything needs a sequel. Sequels are meant for continuing a story (FROM WHERE THE ORIGINAL LEFT OFF) not for boring in between times where nothing actually happens. Or for a badly put together “this is where they are now” kind of story.

Hunchback of Notre Dame 2

It was cute, I liked that Quasimodo got a girlfriend but the story was a little bit messy. And there didn’t seem to be a clear plot.

Lilo and Stitch 2

Eh, I liked that Lilo and Stitch got a TV show. That was a much better format for their continued adventures, the movie was not really necessary and it most definitely was not as good as the first one.

Cars 2

I don’t know why we felt the need to revisit Radiator Springs (right, money) but same kind of thing as Atlantis, the quality drop off between the original and this one is just so large.

An Extremely Goofy Movie

SAME THING. Please stop trying to continue perfect stories.

101 Dalmatians 2

This was not the worst thing ever, it just seemed a little random. The first movie is very much about family and sticking together and the sequel just seems to undo a lot of that.

Jungle Book 2

Honestly it was just boring compared to the first one. We already said I was gonna judge these by their music first and the first one’s songs are so catchy and amazing and the sequel (like a lot of these) was just kind of meh.

Pocahontas 2

Besides this being wildly problematic for obvious reasons, the music was not good and the idea that she “chose” to leave her people is gross.

Aladdin: Return of Jafar

Didn’t hate it but King of Thieves is better.

Tarzan and Jane

Tarzan 2 is not the sequel to Tarzan, come at me. Tarzan and Jane however was cute but nothing special.

Lady and the Tramp 2

I also watched this on repeat as a kid. I think it's a really cute movie, it doesn’t actually have any major problems besides being kind of forgettable.

Little Mermaid 2

Terrible! But I love it so much. It is not a good movie but it is an absolutely adorable effort. The opening song is beautiful, and Melody living the inverse of Ariel's storyline is actually very rooted in reality. The idea that mom can’t possibly understand what it’s like to be a teenage girl was very well portrayed.

Peter Pan: Return to Neverland

I was for some reason obsessed with this movie as a child, I actually think it does a really great job of telling the story of a little girl that had to grow up too fast meeting the boy that won’t ever grow up. This poor girl is living through a war and she doesn’t believe in magic anymore and Peter helps her remember and I actually really love it.

Cinderella 2

I LOVE this sequel. It's more like a mini anthology series and I love the stories that it tells. Love, acceptance of self, breaking tradition it's actually a fantastic movie.

Wreck it Ralph: Ralph Breaks the Internet

It was great. I loved it, definitely on par with the original which is saved for very few of the movies on this list.

The Rescuers Down Under

On par with the original, sweet, funny and true to the original characters. Also a movie that was on repeat when I was little.

Mulan 2

Everyone can fight me, yes this movie belongs this high in the rankings. It was sweet, it was adorable and it was about how everyone deserves love and if you don’t like it, you’re wrong.

Frozen 2

I said I’d judge these by the music and that is definitely the reason this one is ranked so high. Also it's the only one that makes me bawl my eyes out every time. A lot of people missed the magic that was this movie (my husband) but they are wrong and it was incredible.

Lion King 2

Not taking comments or disagreements. This is a perfect sequel that's not only on par with the original but might actually be better. We stuck with basing the story on Shakespeare and it worked. As well as having the best music (and ensemble singing) of any Disney movie ever, Lion King 2 is a masterpiece.

I liked Pocahontas 2 a lot; I loved John Ralph. (Though it is SUPER problematic, I can't lie.) Cinderella 3 was FABULOUS, not a fan of the sequel. I didn't even know half of these had sequels. Great list!
