Ramayana Leaked Trailer Review: Yash’s Ravana Overshadows Ranbir Kapoor’s Lord Ram

Repeated trailer leaks, a delayed public launch, and Yash’s commanding presence have turned Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana into Indian cinema’s biggest marketing controversy.

Whenever the marketing failures of Indian cinema are discussed in the future, the team behind Ramayana may unfortunately become a major example.

The movie has everything required to create historic hype: one of India’s most respected stories, a massive reported budget, globally recognised technicians, Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. Yet instead of celebrating an official trailer together, audiences are watching blurry clips recorded at private screenings.

The trailer was reportedly shown at the Pratham Sankalp event in New Delhi on July 18, 2026. Short clips appeared online soon afterwards. More footage reportedly leaked after another presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on July 24. Some social-media users even combined the different clips into an unofficial trailer lasting nearly two minutes.

This is not simply piracy damaging a promotional campaign. It is also a warning about what happens when a studio repeatedly gives selected groups access to footage while asking the wider audience to continue waiting.

The Trailer Delay Made the Situation Worse

The official trailer was expected to be released publicly on July 24, but producer Namit Malhotra announced that the launch had been postponed.

The stated reason was connected to the film’s international distribution partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment. The producers now intend to coordinate the trailer’s release as part of a larger global campaign. However, no replacement date was announced immediately.

From a business perspective, a coordinated worldwide launch makes sense. Ramayana is being positioned not merely as another Bollywood production but as a global cinematic event. Sony’s involvement could help the film reach audiences far beyond India.

But from the audience’s perspective, the timing was frustrating.

Fans had already waited through rumours, private presentations and earlier leaks. Many stayed awake expecting the promised trailer, only to discover that it had been postponed shortly before its scheduled release. By that point, low-quality footage was already circulating.

The longer the official version remains unavailable, the more people will judge the movie through unfinished-looking, poorly recorded clips.

Yash’s Ravana Appears to Dominate the Leaked Footage

The biggest discussion created by the leaked material is not about the visual effects or the enormous scale. It is about Yash.

Judging only from the footage being discussed online, Ravana appears to receive an explosive introduction. The opening portion reportedly focuses heavily on his presence, dialogue, costumes and different battle sequences.

Yash does not need to perform a large action scene to capture attention. His posture, voice and expressions naturally create authority. As Ravana, that screen presence appears even more powerful.

His costume also seems designed to communicate wealth, pride and danger. The golden details immediately establish him as the ruler of Lanka, while his expressions suggest a character who considers himself intellectually and physically superior to everyone around him.

Ranbir Kapoor himself praised Yash’s aura during the Comic-Con discussion, explaining that the filmmakers needed an actor capable of bringing a fresh interpretation to a character about whom audiences already have strong expectations.

That creative decision may have worked almost too well.

A controversial opinion is already spreading across social media: some viewers may initially enter theatres more excited to watch Yash as Ravana than Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram.

That does not necessarily mean the movie has failed to represent Lord Ram. It may simply mean the leaked footage is incomplete and heavily weighted towards introducing the antagonist.

Is Ranbir Kapoor Being Judged Too Early?

Ranbir Kapoor’s casting has become another major subject of debate.

Some viewers believe his expressions do not possess the divine calmness they associate with Lord Ram. Others have compared him with Arun Govil, whose performance in Ramanand Sagar’s television adaptation remains deeply connected with the character in the minds of millions of Indians.

There are also people who feel that Ranbir’s previous roles—particularly his darker and more aggressive characters—make it difficult to accept him immediately as Lord Ram.

However, judging an entire performance from a few seconds of unofficial footage is unfair.

A complete four-minute trailer could provide emotional context, dialogue, relationships and quieter moments that are missing from the leaked clips. The bond between Ram and Sita, Lord Ram’s exile, his relationship with Lakshman and his emotional conflict may completely change how Ranbir’s performance is perceived.

At present, audiences are comparing Yash’s carefully constructed introduction with disconnected glimpses of Ranbir. That is not a balanced comparison.

The VFX Cannot Be Judged From Blurry Videos

Another argument concerns the visual effects.

Some viewers have praised the scale, backgrounds, creatures and action. Others claim that certain scenes appear too dependent on computer-generated imagery. A flying elephant, believed to represent Airavata—the traditional vehicle of Indra—has also attracted both curiosity and mockery online.

There are reportedly glimpses of Lord Vishnu and a giant creature as well. However, footage recorded from a screen cannot accurately represent the final colour grading, sound design, visual sharpness or VFX quality.

Ramayana has been reported as one of the most expensive Indian film projects ever attempted, with the two-part production aiming for a worldwide audience. The first instalment is scheduled to arrive in November 2026, followed by the second part in 2027.

A low-resolution leak cannot tell us whether that investment appears on screen. Only the official 4K trailer can do that.

The Marketing Team Must Act Quickly

The greatest danger facing Ramayana is not a lack of interest. It is uncontrolled interest.

Every delayed announcement creates speculation. Every private screening creates another opportunity for footage to escape. Every low-quality leak allows viewers to form strong opinions without seeing the material as the filmmakers intended.

The studio should release the official trailer as soon as its global distribution plan allows.

Once the proper version arrives, audiences can finally judge the performances, background score, action, emotional depth and visual effects fairly. Until then, the conversation will continue to be controlled by incomplete footage.

Ramayana does not need artificial hype. Its cultural importance, cast and cinematic scale already provide more than enough attention. Indian audiences are powerful enough to make the film a historic success, provided the filmmakers treat them as the primary audience rather than the last group invited to the celebration.

For now, one conclusion is difficult to ignore: in the leaked footage, Yash’s Ravana appears to have taken the crown.

Whether Ranbir Kapoor’s Lord Ram can reclaim the spotlight will become clear only when the complete official trailer is finally released.
