Quiz: Guess the Sanrio Character

Believe it or not, Sanrio has been around way before computers, laptops, video game consoles, iPhones, iPads and social media platforms existed!

On August 10 1960, Japanese entrepreneur Shintaro Tsuji established Sanrio, which was then named Yamanashi Silk Company located in Nihonbashi, the business district of Tokyo.

In 1962, Tsuji extended his company by not only producing silk, but also rubber sandals with painted flower designs. The establishment became successful when Tsuji added cute patterns to the sandals.

As the company continued to form, plans were created to improve and expand the business. In 1969, Sanrio Greetings was founded. Sanrio Greetings produced affordable and cute gift merchandise by including animated characters onto them. Sanrio Greetings was just like the American Hallmark and the items were similar.

In 1973, Yamanashi Silk Centre changed its business name to Sanrio, moved its headquarters to the Tokyo business district of Gotanda and opened up its first eatery. Sanrio Greetings became a part of this new business and the company formed its film production group.

In 1974, Yuko Shimizu designed Hello Kitty, who was then referred to as, "Kitty White". Because of the increased momentum of British imports and culture, Kitty White was said to originate from London, England, UK.

In 1975, Sanrio produced a clear plastic coin purse with a large-headed white cat and the word, "Hello" on it. Later on, Sanrio made their first steps into the film industry and started producing the cartoon film Little Jumbo, which was not released until 1977.

In 1976, Hello Kitty landed in the USA and opened its first shop situated in the Eastridge Mall in San Jose, California. San Jose was also picked as the headquarters of Sanrio, Inc.

Since the late 1970's, Sanrio continued to generate new characters after all the progress that was made. Sanrio keeps its brand fresh by stopping their characters/mascots from being overused and becoming extinct and bringing characters in and out of fame.

Sanrio has not stopped gaining momentum in the 1980's. The company and the characters became well-known and new characters and products have been designed to attract children and teenagers.

Sanrio Character #1

Out of all the Sanrio characters out there, this character is the most popular Sanrio character. After she was generated in 1974, she was registered in 1975. She is a white cat who wears a red bow, which is a globally known trademark of hers. She has a twin sister named Mimmy and has two pets named Sugar (a hamster) and Charmmy Kitty (a pet cat). She has a kind, feminine and happy nature. Her hobbies include baking, meeting people, reading and listening to music.

Sanrio Character #2

This character is a white rabbit who portrays the classic fairy tale character named Little Red Riding Hood. She wears a red or pink hood that covers her ears and frequently has a bow or a flower on her right side. She was born on January 18th in the magical forest of Mariland in London, England, UK, which is also the home of her many friends. She was generated in 1975 by Yasuko Matsumoto. She has one younger brother named Rhythm. She is the best friend of the most famous Sanrio character, as well as other characters like My Sweet Piano and Pink Sheep. She has a kind, feminine, honest and humble nature. Her favourite thing to do is eat and make almond pound cakes.

Sanrio Character #3

This character is a white dog with black, floppy ears and has no visible mouth. He made his debut in 1989 in Brazil. He is clothed in sporty attire and has an athletic and playful nature. He was then known as The Yorimichi Dog before his name was changed. A few of his loves are basketball, soccer, motorcycling, and skateboarding. He walks upright and has trouble tripping over himself, resulting in head injuries. He resides in Fuwa-Fuwa Town (Airy Town in Japanese). His best friend is Choppy. His favourite foods are banana ice cream, carrots and Chinese milk (renge-so).

Sanrio Character #4

This character was created by Yachiyo Watanabe in 1975. Her birthday is on January 21. She has white feathery hair that's gathered in a pink ribbon. She wears a baggy pink dress and an apron tied with a purple bow. She goes out barefoot. Her favourite things to do are playing among the green trees and going deep in the mountains. She also loves dandelions, strawberries and cherries. She has a boyfriend named Daichan. She is one of the least popular Sanrio characters.

Sanrio Character #5

These adorable twins were born on Christmas Eve on Omoiyari Star in the Dream-Star Cloud. The twins were created in 1975 and were introduced in the early 1980's. One of the twins is female and has long pink hair, which is occasionally blonde. Another twin is male and has short blue hair, which is sometimes brown. To learn how to be "the best shiniest starts", they travel a long way to earth. The male twin loves to invent thing and go star-fishing. He has an inquisitive personality, but he also has a tendency to be impolite. The female twin is a bit timid. She loves to write poems, draw and cook. Both of the twins get along and they always play together. The male twin is protective over the female twin. He is also vulnerable and is often put in risky situations, because of his curious nature. The female twin always worries about his safety and wellbeing. The twins rarely get into a fight, but they when they do, they bounce right back.

Sanrio Character #6

This character was born on July 10th and was created in 1988. He is a frog with large eyes and a V-shaped mouth. He resides in a house located in Donut Pond. His mom is a professional chef and homemaker, and his dad is a doctor. He has two triplet siblings named Pikki and Koroppi. He has a girlfriend named Keroleen. He enjoys swimming, playing baseball, singing and playing with boomerangs. He has a lively and active personality. He is also a gifted singer, except when he is swimming. His favourite thing to eat is rice balls.

Final Thoughts

It's been forever since I've written and published a Vocal quiz game for you guys! After taking a break from creating quiz games, I got back into it! The main reason for taking a break from creating quizzes was: I couldn't come up with many ideas! I also became preoccupied with writing poetry, so I can publish my poetry book.

For as long as I can recall, I've been a passionate Sanrio fan. When I was in elementary school, I had a tremendous love for Hello Kitty and owned many Hello Kitty merchandise like journals and stickers. As I got older, I found other Sanrio characters like My Melody and Pochacco eye-catching and pleasant. With that said, I loved all the Sanrio characters. As an adult, I enjoy drawing various Sanrio characters, because I don't want to forget the times when I first discovered Sanrio and how much joy it gave me, and I want to connect with my inner child.
