Purusha Pretham Ending Explained: Who Was the Dead Body and What Really Happened to Sebastian?
The missing corpse, the mysterious gold ring, Susanna’s shocking lie and Sebastian’s final fantasy make Purusha Pretham’s ending much darker than it first appears.

Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Purusha Pretham, including the identity of the unidentified dead body and the final scene.
Purusha Pretham begins like a strange police investigation but gradually turns into a darkly funny story about ego, lies, corruption and human selfishness. At the centre of everything is Sebastian, a police officer who loves presenting himself as a fearless hero even when reality is very different.
The mystery begins when a badly decomposed male body is discovered near the boundary between two police jurisdictions. Neither station wants responsibility for the unpleasant case, but the corpse eventually drifts toward Sebastian’s side.
What initially appears to be a routine unidentified-body case soon becomes a nightmare for the police.
The Unidentified Body Creates the Real Mystery
After the decomposed body is recovered, the police are unable to identify the dead man.
During the recovery, a gold ring is found on the corpse. Instead of properly preserving this important piece of evidence, Dileep secretly keeps it.
That seemingly small act becomes one of the most important details in the entire story.
With no relatives arriving to identify the body and the mortuary running out of space, the police decide to bury the corpse. The responsibility for the burial is eventually handed over to drunken grave diggers, creating the mistake that will destroy Sebastian and Dileep’s peace.
Then a woman named Susanna arrives at the police station.
She says her husband Bobby has been missing for months and suspects that the unidentified corpse could be him.
Sebastian confidently tells her that the body was not Bobby.
The problem is that he cannot prove it.
Why Does the Body Disappear?
Susanna refuses to accept Sebastian’s answer and eventually takes the matter to court.
The authorities are ordered to exhume the body so she can properly identify it. But when the police return to the cemetery, they face a shocking problem: they cannot find the corpse.
Heavy rain has transformed the cemetery into mud, and the officers are no longer certain where the body was buried.
Multiple areas are dug up, but the unidentified corpse appears to have completely vanished.
This creates a major scandal.
Sebastian and Dileep are blamed for negligence, suspended from duty and placed under enormous pressure to solve a mystery that began because normal police procedure was not followed properly.
For Sebastian, the situation is especially humiliating. The man who enjoys telling exaggerated stories about his bravery is now unable to solve the case destroying his reputation.
The Gold Ring Changes Everything
Eventually, Dileep reveals the gold ring he secretly removed from the corpse.
At first, Sebastian believes the ring can save them.
Susanna had reportedly claimed that Bobby did not wear jewellery. If the corpse had been wearing this gold ring, Sebastian thinks it could prove that his original instinct was correct: the dead man was not Bobby.
But the ring produces an even bigger revelation.
When Sujatha sees it, she immediately recognises it.
The ring belonged to Sujatha’s missing husband.
This means the unidentified man found in the water was apparently not Susanna’s husband Bobby at all.
Sebastian suddenly realises that something much bigger has been happening behind the entire investigation.
What Was Susanna Hiding?
By this point, Susanna has already managed to establish through the legal process that the unidentified corpse was her missing husband. She has obtained the necessary documentation concerning Bobby’s death and is preparing to leave the country.
But the gold ring suggests that the body actually belonged to someone else.
Sebastian concludes that Susanna deliberately used an unidentified corpse to create the appearance that Bobby was dead.
He goes to confront her personally after his superiors refuse to take his discovery seriously.
Under pressure, Susanna finally admits that the corpse was not Bobby.
She explains that Bobby had been an abusive and violent husband. She wanted to escape from him and start a new life, and declaring him dead gave her the opportunity to do so.
The missing corpse investigation was therefore never just about police incompetence. Susanna had taken advantage of the confusion surrounding an unidentified body for her own escape plan.
What Happens to Sebastian?
Sebastian’s confrontation with Susanna quickly becomes violent.
Susanna’s brother attacks him, and eventually Sebastian is struck and thrown into an old well behind the house.
This is where Purusha Pretham deliberately plays with the audience.
We appear to see Sebastian escape from the well, confront the people responsible and defeat them like the heroic police officer he has always imagined himself to be.
He returns triumphantly and tells another dramatic story about how the criminals were helpless before him.
For a moment, Sebastian has finally become the larger-than-life hero of his own stories.
Except none of it actually happened.
Purusha Pretham Ending Explained: Sebastian Never Escaped
The film reveals that Sebastian’s heroic comeback was only his imagination.
In reality, Sebastian is still trapped inside the well.
Dileep eventually arrives and looks down to find him desperately trying to survive.
Even worse, Susanna and her brother have already escaped in their vehicle.
There is no glorious victory.
There is no heroic arrest.
There is no crowd celebrating “Super Sebastian.”
The ending strips away Sebastian’s fantasy and leaves him facing the reality he has spent much of the film trying to avoid.
What Does the Ending Really Mean?
Sebastian constantly exaggerates events to make himself appear braver, stronger and more important than he actually is.
Earlier in the story, even ordinary or embarrassing incidents are transformed into heroic adventures when he retells them.
The final fantasy is the ultimate version of that habit.
When reality becomes unbearable, Sebastian mentally creates the ending he wishes had happened.
In his version, he defeats the villains.
In reality, he is stuck at the bottom of a well while the people he wanted to catch disappear.
That contrast is what makes the ending both funny and surprisingly bleak.
Purusha Pretham is ultimately not simply a mystery about a missing corpse. It is also a story about ego, reputation, institutional carelessness and the stories people create to protect themselves from uncomfortable truths.
Susanna creates a false version of reality to escape her husband.
Dileep hides evidence to protect himself.
Sebastian repeatedly exaggerates reality to protect his heroic image.
Almost everyone is hiding something.
And by the end, reality catches up with all of them.
Final Thoughts
The conclusion may frustrate viewers expecting Sebastian to escape, catch Susanna and receive a traditional heroic ending.
But that frustration appears to be exactly what makes the final twist effective.
Sebastian spends the entire story presenting himself as a larger-than-life policeman. Giving him a conventional action-hero victory would have fulfilled his fantasy.
Instead, the movie shows us that victory — and then immediately takes it away.
The “heroic ending” exists only inside Sebastian’s mind.
The real Sebastian remains inside the well while Susanna and her brother escape.
And that uncomfortable difference between the story Sebastian wants people to believe and what actually happened becomes the perfect final joke of Purusha Pretham.
