Pongala Movie Review: Is Sreenath Bhasi’s Malayalam Action Film Worth Watching ?
Pongala promises action, revenge and a violent gangster conflict, but does this Malayalam film actually deliver an entertaining experience?

Pongala Movie Review
Malayalam cinema has given us some outstanding thrillers, crime dramas and action films over the years. That reputation was one of the main reasons I was curious about Pongala.
I had heard the name of this movie several times, and when I finally found its Hindi-dubbed version, I decided to give it a try.
After watching it, however, my reaction was very different from what I had expected.
Pongala, starring Sreenath Bhasi, is an action-revenge Malayalam film centred around the violent conflicts surrounding Kerala's Vypin harbour region. The film was originally released in 2025 and is directed by A B Binil.
So, is Pongala worth watching in Hindi?
Unfortunately, for me, the answer is mostly no.
What Is Pongala About?
The story revolves around Aby, a man carrying the burden of his family's troubled past.
His father, Joseph, disappeared years ago after certain events left the entire family surrounded by disgrace and controversy.
Aby's life becomes even worse when he is convicted of a crime he claims he never committed and spends years in prison.
After finally returning home, Aby wants to establish control over the harbour.
Naturally, that puts him directly against the gangsters who already dominate the area.
What initially looks like a territorial conflict soon becomes much more personal. Old enemies, forgotten secrets and Aby's past begin resurfacing, eventually pushing the story toward revenge.
That sounds like the foundation for an intense gangster action thriller.
And that was exactly what I expected.
Plenty of Action, But Where Is the Story?
If there is one thing Pongala does not lack, it is action.
There are fights, confrontations, gang rivalries and plenty of aggressive characters.
The problem is that after some time, I found myself watching the screen without being emotionally involved in anything happening on it.
At one point, my eyes were open and I was technically still watching the movie, but my brain had stopped trying to understand what was going on.
That is probably the easiest way to describe my Pongala experience.
The movie keeps throwing incidents and characters at the viewer, but instead of becoming more exciting, the narrative started feeling increasingly exhausting.
Pongala Is Perfect... If You Need Sleep
I have to give Pongala one hundred cannon salutes for achieving something very few action movies manage to do.
Instead of making me jump out of my seat with excitement, it almost helped me fall asleep.
People spend money looking for ways to get peaceful, comfortable sleep these days. Pongala almost delivers that service while simultaneously showing people beating each other on screen.
That is an achievement in itself.
Jokes aside, pacing was one of my biggest problems with the film.
An action movie can be long if its characters, conflicts and emotional stakes keep you invested. But when that connection is missing, even a few additional minutes can start feeling heavy.
Pongala felt much longer to me than it needed to be.
Is Pongala Completely Bad?
Not necessarily.
There is one particular audience that may enjoy this film considerably more than I did.
If your only requirement from a movie is raw action, gang fights, aggression and revenge, Pongala may still work for you.
The harbour setting also gives the film a gritty atmosphere that suits its gangster-style conflict.
But viewers expecting the kind of tightly written mystery, emotional drama or intelligent thriller storytelling for which Malayalam cinema is often praised may come away disappointed.
My expectations were probably part of the problem.
I went into Pongala hoping for something powerful.
Instead, most of what stayed with me was the action.
Hindi Dub and Where to Watch Pongala
The Hindi-dubbed version of Pongala is available through Lionsgate Play, including through supported streaming partners.
The Hindi audio makes the film accessible to viewers who do not normally watch Malayalam-language movies with subtitles.
I genuinely appreciate OTT platforms bringing more South Indian films to Hindi-speaking audiences.
At the same time, there are many acclaimed Malayalam movies that Hindi viewers are still waiting to experience in dubbed form. I would love to see platforms bring more of those hidden gems to a wider audience as well.
Final Verdict: Is Pongala Worth Watching?
Pongala had the ingredients for a solid revenge-action drama: a troubled hero, a mysterious family past, gangsters, harbour politics and a revenge storyline.
Unfortunately, those ingredients never came together in a way that kept me invested.
There is plenty of action, but action alone cannot carry such a lengthy movie.
My verdict: Watch Pongala only if you are a hardcore fan of violent action and gangster revenge dramas. If you are expecting a gripping Malayalam thriller with an unforgettable story, you may want to keep your expectations low.
And if you have already watched Pongala, tell me your opinion.
Did you enjoy the movie, or did Pongala test your patience too?
