Pinocchio: Unstrung takes one of the most familiar children’s stories ever created and turns it into something completely different. Instead of following an innocent wooden puppet who simply dreams of becoming a real boy, this horror version explores what might happen if that dream became an obsession.

At the centre of the story are James, his grandfather Geppetto, and Pinocchio, a living puppet created through a disturbing experiment. What begins as an unusual friendship slowly becomes a bloody nightmare when Pinocchio decides that becoming human requires more than simply behaving like one.

The ending also reveals that Geppetto’s experiments are much darker than James ever imagined, while Cricket’s final appearance leaves the door open for the horror to continue.

James Meets Geppetto’s Secret Creation

The story begins with 14-year-old James, who loses both of his parents in a car accident and goes to live with his grandfather, Geppetto.

James has already experienced more loss than most children his age. He makes two friends after moving in with Geppetto, but one eventually dies from cancer while the other moves away.

Seeing how lonely his grandson has become, Geppetto decides James needs a companion who will never leave him.

That companion is Pinocchio.

For weeks, Geppetto secretly works inside a basement that James is forbidden from entering. One night, James hears strange noises and eventually discovers what his grandfather has been hiding.

Inside the basement is a creepy opening surrounded by vines, and from it emerges Pinocchio — a wooden puppet who can move, speak and think for himself.

James is understandably terrified.

Geppetto insists that Pinocchio is not merely a puppet but a living being. He explains that he created him because he wanted James to have a friend who would always be there.

Slowly, James begins spending time with Pinocchio.

The two play together, create their own secret handshake and eventually become best friends.

But Pinocchio soon develops another desire.

He wants to become human.

Why Does Pinocchio Want to Become a Real Boy?

James begins teaching Pinocchio about human biology and the outside world.

At first, Pinocchio’s curiosity seems innocent. He examines James’ face, asks questions about the human body and tries to understand what separates people from puppets.

However, his obsession becomes much stronger after he discovers another puppet hidden inside Geppetto’s basement.

This creature introduces herself as the Wooden Mother.

She tells Pinocchio that they are prisoners and reveals what she claims is the secret to becoming human.

According to her, Pinocchio needs human skin, blood, teeth and hair.

Instead of becoming human through magic or personal growth, this version of Pinocchio begins believing that he can physically build a human body for himself.

When Pinocchio insists that he is already a real boy, his famous curse appears: his nose grows because he is lying.

This confirms that despite being alive, Pinocchio is still not truly human.

The Wooden Mother’s suggestion plants a dangerous idea inside his mind.

James Takes Pinocchio to School

James eventually decides to secretly take Pinocchio to school.

He hides him inside a bag and tells people that Pinocchio is simply a puppet created by his grandfather.

During the school day, Pinocchio begins seeing the human world for himself.

He watches people exercising, accidentally causes chaos in a gym and learns more about James’ life.

More importantly, he discovers that James is being bullied.

Trey, Logan and others humiliate James, steal from him and destroy the toys he has made.

During the confrontation, an angry and emotional James says that he wishes they were all dead.

James does not literally mean it.

Pinocchio does not understand that.

To him, protecting James is now his responsibility.

Earlier, he had learned from a documentary that animals protect members of their herd from predators. Pinocchio considers James his own “herd.”

That innocent lesson becomes twisted into a horrifying rule: anyone who hurts James must be eliminated.

Pinocchio’s First Killing Changes Everything

The situation becomes even worse after James is involved in another car accident.

While James is recovering in hospital, Pinocchio hears that the driver responsible for the crash has a history of dangerous behaviour.

Pinocchio decides the man is a threat to James.

He attacks him.

But killing the driver is only the beginning.

Remembering what the Wooden Mother told him, Pinocchio begins taking human body parts because he believes they can help transform him into a real boy.

From this moment, Pinocchio’s two motivations become connected.

He wants to protect James.

He also wants to become human.

Every person he identifies as “bad” becomes both an enemy and a potential source of the human pieces he desperately wants.

Why Does Pinocchio Attack the Dentist?

Another disturbing sequence happens after Pinocchio watches James receiving dental treatment.

James has a tooth removed, which gives Pinocchio another idea.

He later enters the dentist’s clinic with Cricket and attacks the dentist, taking human teeth for himself.

He places the teeth into his own mouth, giving himself a grotesque imitation of a human smile.

The scene is important because it shows how far Pinocchio has moved away from James’ original idea of friendship.

James had accepted Pinocchio as he was.

He even told him that being a puppet made him unique.

But Pinocchio cannot accept himself.

He thinks humanity is something that can literally be assembled.

James Discovers Geppetto’s Experiments

Meanwhile, James and his friends Mia and Dudley discover recordings hidden inside Geppetto’s house.

The tapes reveal the truth.

Geppetto has been experimenting with life, death and human souls.

He believes that a human soul can survive after death and can somehow be transferred into another body.

Pinocchio is not his first experiment.

Earlier puppets had been created, but something went wrong. Some became violent, while others desperately wanted freedom.

Geppetto considered them failures.

One recording reveals something even more disturbing: Geppetto hoped that keeping Pinocchio close to James might cause memories from Pinocchio’s previous human life to return.

This means Pinocchio was never simply a magical puppet.

A dead human soul exists inside him.

Later, James learns exactly whose soul Geppetto used.

It belongs to one of James’ deceased childhood friends.

This explains why Geppetto was so determined to place Pinocchio beside James.

He was not merely creating James a new friend.

In his own twisted way, he was attempting to bring an old one back.

Why Pinocchio Kills James’ Bullies

After misunderstanding James’ angry wish that the bullies should die, Pinocchio begins targeting everyone he believes has harmed his best friend.

His violence becomes increasingly extreme.

He attacks the teenagers connected to James’ bullying while continuing to attach stolen human features to himself.

Eventually, Pinocchio looks into a mirror and believes that he has finally succeeded.

Covered in human features, he thinks he has become a real person.

But the transformation is only physical.

Emotionally and morally, Pinocchio understands humanity less than ever.

His idea of love has become possession.

His idea of friendship has become violent protection.

And his idea of becoming human has become the destruction of actual humans.

Geppetto’s Tree and the Real Secret Behind Pinocchio

Geppetto eventually captures Pinocchio and brings him back home.

This leads to one of the movie’s biggest revelations.

Behind the basement is a hidden chamber containing a massive tree surrounded by human remains.

Geppetto explains that the tree absorbed the life essence of bodies placed around it.

He then used wood from that tree to create his puppets.

That is the true foundation of his experiments.

Geppetto has even taken bodies from graves and used them in his attempts to defeat death.

Pinocchio was simply the experiment Geppetto believed had finally worked.

Once Pinocchio becomes uncontrollable, however, Geppetto decides that he too is a failure.

Several earlier puppet experiments are still imprisoned inside the hidden chamber.

Now Geppetto plans to destroy Pinocchio.

Pinocchio Unstrung Ending Explained

James, Mia and Dudley arrive while Geppetto is preparing to kill Pinocchio.

The confrontation quickly becomes violent.

Dudley is badly wounded, while James and Mia attempt to free Pinocchio and escape into the chamber containing the mysterious tree.

Geppetto follows them.

James finally understands what his grandfather has done.

Geppetto has spent years convincing himself that his horrifying experiments were justified because he could defeat death and bring people back.

But James sees something very different.

He sees a monster.

When James calls his grandfather exactly that, Geppetto loses control.

A fight follows, and James eventually attacks Geppetto while trying to protect Mia.

Pinocchio then finds a gun.

This is where Pinocchio makes an important declaration.

He says he no longer wants to exist as somebody else’s puppet.

He does not want to belong to James.

He does not want to belong to Geppetto.

He wants his own identity.

Geppetto responds by telling Pinocchio that without him, he is nothing.

Pinocchio fires.

But the bullet does not kill Geppetto.

Instead, it breaks the lock on the cage containing one of Geppetto’s failed puppet experiments.

The creature escapes and attacks Geppetto.

It eventually drags him into the cage, turning Geppetto into a victim of the very experiments he created.

A short circuit causes a fire, and the house begins burning.

James, Mia and Pinocchio escape outside and watch Geppetto’s nightmare collapse in flames.

Is Pinocchio Really Evil?

Outside the burning house, Pinocchio asks James an important question.

Are they still friends?

James says yes.

Then Pinocchio asks whether he is bad.

Mia tells him that he was manipulated and led down the wrong path, suggesting that he still has the ability to change.

For a moment, the movie appears to offer Pinocchio redemption.

Pinocchio looks back at the burning house and says goodbye.

He then claims that he never enjoyed killing people.

And his nose immediately starts growing.

That single moment changes the meaning of the scene.

Pinocchio is lying.

Some part of him actually enjoyed what he did.

The movie therefore refuses to completely excuse Pinocchio’s actions.

Yes, the Wooden Mother and Cricket manipulated him.

Yes, Geppetto created the circumstances that allowed everything to happen.

And yes, Pinocchio initially believed he was protecting James.

But by the end, Pinocchio has developed desires of his own.

That makes him far more dangerous.

What Happens to Geppetto?

The movie initially makes it appear that Geppetto has died inside the burning house.

However, the final scene changes everything.

Back in the basement, the Wooden Mother is apparently destroyed by the fire.

Cricket, however, survives.

Cricket finds Geppetto’s body and attaches him to the supernatural tree.

He then refers to Geppetto as his master.

The implication is clear.

Geppetto may not remain dead.

The same supernatural process he used to experiment on other people could now be used on him.

The man who spent his life trying to defeat death may become the next creature brought back by his own creation.

What Does the Final Cricket Scene Mean?

Cricket’s survival is arguably the biggest sequel setup in Pinocchio: Unstrung.

Throughout the movie, Cricket helps encourage Pinocchio’s violent behaviour instead of acting as the moral conscience audiences normally associate with the classic Pinocchio story.

By connecting Geppetto to the tree at the end, Cricket appears to be continuing Geppetto’s work.

That creates several possibilities.

Geppetto could return in another form.

The supernatural tree could survive the fire.

Other failed puppets could still exist.

And most importantly, Pinocchio himself is still alive.

The ending therefore does not destroy the source of the horror. It simply separates its different pieces.

The Real Meaning of Pinocchio Unstrung

Beneath its horror and violence, Pinocchio: Unstrung is ultimately about identity.

Almost every major character is trying to control what somebody else should become.

Geppetto wants to control life and death.

The Wooden Mother tells Pinocchio how to become human.

Cricket manipulates Pinocchio’s understanding of right and wrong.

James initially treats Pinocchio as a friend but eventually realises that Pinocchio must make his own choices.

Pinocchio’s biggest mistake is believing that becoming human means looking human.

He collects skin, teeth, hair and other human features, but none of them make him a real person.

The final confrontation suggests that becoming independent is far more important than becoming physically human.

Unfortunately, his growing nose in the final moments also proves that independence does not automatically make him good.

Pinocchio is finally free.

But nobody knows what he will choose to become next.

And with Cricket apparently preparing to bring Geppetto back, the nightmare may only be beginning.
