Pallichattambi Review: Tobino Thomas Gives His Best, But the Story Doesn't Reach the Same Level

There are very few actors in Malayalam cinema who have built as much trust with audiences as Tobino Thomas. Every time he announces a new film, expectations naturally go up because of the quality of projects he usually chooses. Whether it was Thallumaala, ARM, Identity, Minnal Murali, Forensic, or several other successful films, Tobino has consistently proved that he can carry almost any story with his incredible screen presence and acting skills.

Now his latest historical period drama, Pallichattambi (2026), has finally arrived with an official Hindi dub on Sony LIV. I had already watched the film in Malayalam when it was released, but I decided to watch it once again in Hindi. The reason was simple—I wanted to see whether the Hindi dubbing could improve the overall experience and whether the story would feel any better the second time around.

The Hindi version definitely deserves appreciation. Sony LIV has once again delivered quality dubbing with dialogues that feel natural instead of forced. If you don't understand Malayalam, the Hindi version is absolutely a comfortable way to experience the film.

The story revolves around Krishna, played by Tobino Thomas. He is introduced as an orphan whose childhood is filled with tragedy. His family is brutally murdered because of a conflict, leaving him alone with painful memories that continue to haunt him throughout his life.

The narrative then shifts to the 1950s, where a serious dispute over church property turns into a violent conflict. As tensions rise, the Christian community finds itself unable to protect its people and their land. Desperate for help, they bring in Krishna, a fearless man whose reputation alone is enough to make people think twice before standing against him.

But protecting the church is only one part of his journey.

As the story unfolds, Krishna's own past slowly begins to connect with the present conflict. Why was his family murdered? What secrets link his childhood to the church? And can he finally bring peace to a village drowning in hatred and violence? The answers unfold gradually as the film moves toward its climax.

Without revealing any major spoilers, it is fair to say that Pallichattambi has a few scenes that leave a strong emotional impact. Some sequences are genuinely dark and heartbreaking. A couple of moments are so painful that they can leave viewers completely silent. Those scenes remind you that the film had the potential to become something truly special.

Unfortunately, those moments are not enough to save the overall experience.

The biggest problem lies in the screenplay. Despite having an interesting premise, the film moves at a slow pace and rarely creates the emotional connection it desperately needs. As viewers, we should feel Krishna's pain, understand his struggles, and become emotionally invested in his journey. Instead, the storytelling often feels distant, making it difficult to connect with many of the characters.

Tobino Thomas once again proves why he is one of the finest actors working today. His performance is sincere, powerful, and emotionally convincing from beginning to end. Even in scenes where the screenplay feels weak, he manages to keep the audience engaged through his expressions and body language.

However, acting alone cannot make a film memorable.

Apart from Krishna's backstory, very few characters receive enough development to leave a lasting impression. The emotional highs never fully land because the presentation lacks the depth needed to make viewers genuinely care about everyone's journey.

One department where the film performs exceptionally well is its Hindi dubbing. Sony LIV has earned a reputation for delivering high-quality dubbed Malayalam content, and Pallichattambi continues that trend. The dialogues feel smooth, the voice artists suit the characters perfectly, and nothing sounds unnatural. In fact, many Hindi-speaking viewers may actually enjoy this version more than the original simply because of how accessible it feels.

The film also struggled commercially after its theatrical release. Made on an estimated budget of around ₹45 crore, it reportedly earned only about ₹20 crore worldwide. Recovering less than half of its budget clearly indicates that audiences didn't connect with the story the way the makers had hoped. Most of the theatrical audience was probably made up of Tobino Thomas fans who wanted to support their favourite actor regardless of the film's reception.

That doesn't mean the movie is completely unwatchable.

If you admire Tobino Thomas or enjoy historical dramas, there is still enough here to justify a one-time watch. The film is also completely family-friendly, with no unnecessary vulgarity or objectionable content, making it suitable to watch with everyone at home.

Now that Pallichattambi is streaming on Sony LIV with an official Hindi dub, it becomes much easier to experience the film without visiting theatres. You can appreciate Tobino Thomas's committed performance, enjoy the excellent Hindi dubbing, and decide for yourself whether the emotional moments outweigh the film's storytelling flaws.

In the end, Pallichattambi is a film that had all the ingredients to become an unforgettable historical drama but falls short because of its weak screenplay and uneven presentation. Tobino Thomas once again delivers a performance worthy of praise, but even his talent cannot completely overcome the limitations of the script.

If you're watching purely because you're a Tobino Thomas fan, you'll likely enjoy parts of the experience. But if you're expecting another masterpiece like some of his previous films, this one may leave you a little disappointed.
