Operation Safed Sagar Review: Is Netflix’s Kargil War Series Worth Watching?
Netflix’s Operation Safed Sagar turns the Indian Air Force’s role in the 1999 Kargil War into an emotional, patriotic and action-packed six-episode series. Here’s my spoiler-free review.

Netflix released Operation Safed Sagar: The Highest Air Force Mission on August 7, 2026. The limited series consists of six episodes and stars Siddharth, Jimmy Shergill, Abhay Verma, Dia Mirza, Mihir Ahuja, Taaruk Raina and others.
I finished all six episodes, and I genuinely did not expect this series to hit as hard as it does.
We have already seen several Indian movies and shows based on the Kargil War, so creating something that still feels powerful is not easy. Operation Safed Sagar, however, approaches the conflict largely through the Indian Air Force and the Golden Arrows squadron, giving the story a different perspective. Netflix describes the series as following the squadron as it takes on a dangerous mission during the Kargil War.
What Is Operation Safed Sagar About?
The series is inspired by the Indian Air Force operation conducted during the 1999 Kargil conflict.
The real Operation Safed Sagar was a major milestone for the Indian Air Force. According to the Indian Air Force, air support was first sought in May 1999, and the Cabinet Committee on Security gave approval on May 25 for attacks against infiltrators while maintaining the restriction against crossing the Line of Control.
The challenges were extraordinary because aircraft had to operate in extremely difficult mountainous terrain and at very high altitudes. India’s Ministry of Defence has described the Kargil air operations as being conducted in conditions above 16,000 feet that created unusual targeting and operational difficulties.
Instead of turning all this into a dry history lesson, the Netflix series focuses on the pilots, commanders, their preparation, their relationships and the enormous pressure involved in carrying out missions where even a small mistake could become fatal.
A Series That Delivers Genuine Goosebumps
The biggest strength of Operation Safed Sagar is the emotion it creates.
Whenever a movie or series deals with Indian soldiers and a conflict such as Kargil, there is naturally a strong patriotic element. But patriotism alone cannot make a show good. The scenes need proper build-up, convincing performances and music capable of supporting the emotion.
This series gets many of those things right.
There are moments where the dialogue, background score and performances come together beautifully. Several sequences genuinely gave me goosebumps.
There were times when I found myself wanting to shout “Jai Hind” along with the characters.
And that is probably the biggest compliment I can give the series.
It manages to create the emotional impact that even some big-budget war movies fail to achieve.
Siddharth and Jimmy Shergill Lead a Strong Cast
The performances are another major reason why the show works.
Siddharth plays Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, while Jimmy Shergill appears as Wing Commander BS “Tony” Dhanoa. Abhay Verma is also part of the central Golden Arrows group.
Siddharth brings seriousness and emotional weight to his character without making the performance feel unnecessarily dramatic.
Jimmy Shergill has the kind of screen presence that suits a military drama extremely well. Whenever he is on screen, he brings authority to the situation.
Abhay Verma also gets moments to make an impact, while Dia Mirza and the supporting cast help give the series a human side beyond fighter aircraft and military operations.
Most importantly, the actors make you care about the people involved.
That emotional connection becomes extremely important once the missions become more dangerous.
The Background Music Is Excellent
One thing I absolutely loved was the BGM.
War dramas depend heavily on sound design and music. If the background music becomes too loud, the scenes start feeling artificial. If it is too weak, the emotional moments lose their impact.
Operation Safed Sagar finds a good balance for most of the series.
During the patriotic and aerial sequences, the score adds considerable energy. Some scenes become far more powerful because of the music accompanying them.
Watching those moments with good headphones or a proper sound system will definitely improve the experience.
Where Operation Safed Sagar Falls Short
The show is not perfect.
My biggest issue is the pacing.
Netflix lists the six episodes at roughly 47 to 57 minutes each, giving the complete season a runtime of around five and a half hours.
At certain points, that length can be felt.
A slightly tighter edit could have made the series even more gripping. There are sections where the narrative slows down and viewers looking mainly for aerial combat may need a little patience.
The second weakness is the visual effects.
The aerial sequences are exciting in concept, but a few wide shots do not look as polished as they could have. At times, particularly when the camera moves from aircraft toward the landscape below, the CGI becomes noticeable.
Considering the scale of the story, stronger VFX could have elevated these scenes considerably.
Thankfully, the emotional strength of the story and performances means these visual limitations rarely destroy the overall experience.
Is Operation Safed Sagar Worth Watching?
Yes.
If you enjoy Indian military dramas, stories based on real events, patriotic cinema or Kargil War stories, Operation Safed Sagar deserves a place on your Netflix watchlist.
More importantly, I think this is the kind of series that can also be watched with family.
It is not simply trying to present fighter jets and explosions. The show also explores courage, responsibility, teamwork and the personal sacrifices connected with military service.
The Indian Air Force’s real Operation Safed Sagar involved thousands of missions and sorties during the Kargil conflict, making it one of the significant chapters in India’s military aviation history.
That history gives the drama an emotional weight that fictional war stories cannot easily reproduce.
Final Verdict
I went into Operation Safed Sagar without huge expectations and came out genuinely impressed.
The series has some pacing issues and the visual effects could have been stronger, but the powerful performances, excellent background score, patriotic atmosphere and emotional war sequences compensate for most of those weaknesses.
Siddharth and Jimmy Shergill are particularly effective, while the supporting cast ensures that the story never becomes only about aircraft and explosions.
Netflix has delivered a military drama that can make you emotional, proud and genuinely excited within the same episode.
Rating: 3.5/5
If you enjoy Kargil War stories and Indian military dramas, Operation Safed Sagar is definitely worth watching.
