Obsession is the horror movie that is causing rage in the whole world. The brilliantly macabre story was produced with less than a million dollars and to date has grossed more than 148 million. The movie directed by Curry Barker has generated fascination and horror lovers want to understand the whole plot, especially the incredible ending it has.

It can be said that the movie dazzles with a unique ending that is worth studying to understand it.

Obsession introduces Baron "Bear" Bailey, a young man who is in love with Nikki Freeman, his childhood friend. To get her to reciprocate his feelings, he concretizes a spell that works but brings dire consequences.

In the final part of the story, Bear feels totally destroyed inside. As Nikki becomes more dependent and troublesome, he gradually begins to realize the real damage he has caused. The supernatural obsession is no longer a private thing and begins to publicly impact those around him.

The story intentionally does not provide a happy ending. Bear ends up reclusive, consumed by his guilt and facing the reality that he will never be able to forge an authentic love through manipulation. This is precisely the deep moral wound raised in the story: even when intentions seem to be romantic or desperate, the repercussions of controlling the will of others can ruin entire lives.

The ending also highlights that Bear and Nikki are victims of much more serious problems. Loneliness, fear of rejection, lack of security and inability to handle true emotions are the real engine of horror. The supernatural element simply amplifies human defects that were already present from the very beginning.

The final message is particularly devastating, as the fear comes not only from supernatural disorder, but from the idea that a single act of emotional cowardice can destroy many lives.

Useful warnings

Obsession tells a symbolic story that highlights the relevance of consent and how certain men currently interact with the women they supposedly adore. Bear does not become a character with whom one can feel sympathy; although he is shy, nervous and anxious, none of this justifies what he does or his choices. Being with the delighted Nikki, he should have realized, sooner or later, that his actions were wrong and that in many ways he was endangering and assaulting her. Bear does not take effective measures to prevent the tragedy when he could have done, which reflects negatively on him.

The film works properly as a horror experience. Little by little, Barker creates an atmosphere of fear and tension that feels intense, lengthening scenes that seem normal with prolonged shots and gentle camera movements. The director knows how to incorporate images that impress: a sequence where Nikki is seen in the shadows, with a disturbing look; a night scene in which Nikki watches Bear sleeping from a corner; and an instant in which Nikki remains smiling so long that she ends up urinating in the middle of the room.

When Bear opts to take his own life to break the spell that caused so much suffering, the true terror is revealed. The death of the man who awakened the desire breaks the curse and frees the real Nikki. She suddenly wakes up, surrounded by the lifeless bodies of her friends and with the horror of understanding what happened while she was trapped.

The most disturbing thing about Obsession is not its supernatural aspect, but its interpretation about obsessive relationships. The film uses a magical toy and a curse to address a very real theme: the desire to dominate another person and transform love into possession.

Bear never tried to take anyone's life, he just wanted to be loved. But by depriving Nikki of her freedom, he destroyed precisely what she longed for.
