In one of the most exciting developments this year, Marvel Editor-in-chief Alex Alonso has provided us with a tease of the next stage in Weapon-X experiments. The tease is merely a poster with the tagline "under construction," but it's an amazing piece of art that will undoubtedly lead to a menacing force being unleashed on the Marvel universe.
The poster is of a test subject in a container labeled Batch-H. Said creature possesses notable features of both Wolverine and Hulk, and is clearly the next stage in Weapon-X subjects.
History of Weapon-X in Marvel Comics
For those unfamiliar with Weapon-X, it's the clandestine government group responsible for turning James Howlett into the indestructible Wolverine. By grafting adamantium metal on to Wolverine's bones, the Weapon-X program created its first indestructible mutant who also happened to go berserk in their facility. #Wolverine was a successful test subject who wound up going rogue, but success with Wolverine inspired the leaders of Weapon-X to continue experimenting on other mutants.
The Weapon-X program isn't merely responsible for creating Wolverine; the program also gave birth to many other characters in the Marvel universe, including Deadpool. Most of Weapon-X's past experiments ended in failures, but there were some subjects who unlocked their full potential through these experiments. Not all participants were willing (actually most were unwilling). One of note, who had no choice in the matter and was practically born into Weapon-X, is Laura Kinney, otherwise known as X-23.
#X23 is one of the few surviving patients to undergo experiments in the Weapon-X program. Other subjects like Sabretooth and Agent Zero survived the experiments but their results weren't as promising as X-23 or Deadpool. Both Deadpool and X-23 have accelerated healing factors that allow their bodies to recover from the experiments performed on them, including the bonding of adamantium to their bones, making them almost indestructible. However, it's not the adamantium that make Deadpool and X-23 successes of the Weapon-X program.
What really makes Deadpool and X-23 successes, or rather success stories, is how they survived. Weapon-X's test subjects were either required to work as agents for the group or be dissected. Should a subject escape, they'd be hunted down by guards from the facility without remorse.
What is Batch-H?
Moving past the previous experiments of the Weapon-X program, it appears as if the next stage in the program has moved in a new direction with Batch-H. The creature inside is substantially larger and possesses a pair of claws similar to Wolverine's. The Batch-H creature could be a clone of Wolverine with Hulk's DNA infused into him. Or, there's a slight possibility that Bruce Banner a.k.a. the Hulk has been captured and experimented on. Although, the likeliest scenario is that Wolverine or a Wolverine clone has been injected with Hulk's DNA, resulting in Batch-H.
Whatever the case may be, Batch-H is going to be quite a fearsome creature. Being a combination of two of Marvel's strongest characters in existence (Wolverine and Hulk), it practically spells out trouble for anyone who has to subdue the massive creature. It's going to take someone just as formidable to tame that beast (if that's even possible).
For now, we'll have to wait on information to be revealed in regards to what "Batch-H" is and what kind of destruction will be brought down on the #Marvel universe because of it.
