Next Picks After Netflix
A guide to find your new obsession
According to Netflix Australia, these are the top ten streams right now.
If you've already binged the best stuff and been left with a sad void in your life, then don't despair - I've got your back.
You'll be pleased to know that I have rounded up some recommendations for you, based on these trending titles. I have tried to mix it up a little bit - of course TV shows and movies are included, but I've also thrown in some art, podcasts, bands, channels and books to seek out too.
These recommendations are based on recurring aesthetics, themes and faces. I really hope you find something you love.
Behind Her Eyes
If you have been as hooked on Behind Her Eyes as I have been lately, then my friend, I have two words for you - Gone Girl.
Whilst there is a fairly decent movie adaption starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, I'm going to be 'that person'. The book is so much better.
I vividly remember carrying my copy of Gone Girl around the house, on the bus - everywhere, just because I was physically compelled to keep on turning the pages to find out what happens next.
I can't get enough of the thriller genre, so I have some other great picks for you too;
- Date Night by Samantha Hayes (Book)
- The Flight Attendant (TV Series)
- Perfect Match by Jodi Picoult (Book)
- The Stranger (TV Series)
- The Undoing (TV Series)
Firefly Lane
I have loved every minute of watching the ups and downs of Tully and Kate's friendship on Firefly Lane, as they navigate love, life, parenting, their careers, and everything in between.
If you have been a fan of this series, I highly encourage you to give the Life Uncut podcast a listen.
Since I have discovered this little gem, I have put all of my other podcasts and audiobooks on hold, so I can cram in as much of Life Uncut as I possibly can. I listen to at least two episodes a day, and it has made my daily commute to work so much more enjoyable.
The hosts, Britt and Laura, are two of the funniest, most genuine people, and they never fail to make me laugh out loud. They aren't afraid to tackle the big, sensitive topics either, which they handle with such respect and care.
If you're looking for something new to listen to, give the girls a try. I also have some other things for you to check out, that I'm sure you'd be interested in;
- Someone Great (Movie)
- Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman (Book)
- Bump (TV Series)
- Sex and the City (TV Series)
- Morning Wars / The Morning Show (TV Series)
Outlander
Whilst I am yet to delve into the Outlander world for myself, one of my closest friends is obsessed with the show. She was recently gifted the postcard versions of these unique artworks by Emma Munger, and she was understandably over the moon.
I'm sure all fans of the show would appreciate the unique designs, and these other recommendations I have for them;
- The Outlander Kitchen (Book)
- Doctor Who (TV Series)
- Outlander Series (Books)
- Vikings (TV Series)
- Men in Kilts (TV Series)
2067
2020 may have felt like the end of the world, but lucky for us, here we all are. We may even make it to 2067, to see how much of Netflix's new futuristic film comes true.
If you enjoyed this movie, Amazon Prime's recent apocalyptic offering, Greenland, may be for you. It truly exceeded all of my expectations. Much to my husband's frustration, I have a habit of falling asleep during pretty much every movie that we watch together. Not this one though, let me tell you. I was on the edge of my seat and remained bright eyed and bushy tailed at all times.
Some other things you may enjoy if you're interested in the end of the world;
- Avengers: Endgame (Movie)
- Edge of Tomorrow (Movie)
- Bird Box (Movie)
- How it Ends (Movie)
- A Quiet Place (Movie)
Brooklyn 99
Allow me to paint a picture for you. All is quiet in the Cook household. My husband turns to me, and asks "Brook?" - his nickname for Brooklyn 99. I nod, and for the umpteenth time, we embark on the journey that is seven seasons of comedic gold.
I'm not exaggerating one little bit, when I say that this show is on constant repeat in our house.
We have shows that we watch together, and shows that we watch separately. My comedy to watch solo time and time again, is Schitt's Creek. If you are yet to stumble upon the wonderful Rose family, then first of all, where have you been?
As much as I absolutely love the show, it did take me quite a few episodes in, until I got to that point - so if you have started watching it previously and didn't think it was for you, please go back and give it another try. You won't regret it.
- The Lonely Island (Band)
- Die Hard Series (Movies)
- The Good Place (TV Series)
- Scrubs (TV Series)
- Palm Springs (Movie)
New Amsterdam
Full disclosure, I suffer from anxiety around medical issues - so I'm definitely not the key demographic for this show! However, by all accounts, it's a fantastic show. After talking to friends and family about their favourite shows, I have pulled together some recommendations based on themes and actors, for you to watch after New Amsterdam.
As a proud Aussie, I'm choosing to feature the classic hospital drama, All Saints - It is my mum's favourite show after all. It's a great show, and I'm sure you'll love it if you give it a try. Some other shows you may enjoy are;
- Grey's Anatomy (TV Series)
- 90210 (TV Series)
- Blacklist (TV Series)
- The Good Doctor (TV Series)
- House (TV Series)
Tribes of Europa
If you've enjoyed watching the first season of Tribes of Europa, which focuses on young people in a post-apocalyptic world, I need to recommend The Tomorrow Series by John Marsden.
The first of seven books in the series is Tomorrow, When the War Began. There have been a few film and television adaptions of the first book, and a sequel series, The Ellie Chronicles was also released. Some other finds for you are;
- The 100
- The Walking Dead
- The Witcher
- I Am Legend
- World War Z
Superstore
I know I have given quite a few Australian recommendations so far, but why stop now? Rostered On is a clever, funny and relatable TV series, and being so similar in concept to Superstore, it is a must-see, if you need your next retail comedy fix.
Some other shows to dive into if you're looking for the same kind of laughs, familiar faces - or both, are;
- The Office (TV Show)
- Parks and Recreation (TV Show)
- 30 Rock (TV Show)
- 2 Broke Girls (TV Show)
- Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants (Movie)
Crime Scene: Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel
Let's talk true crime. The story of Elisa Lam is as fascinating as it is devastating. If you, like me, are an avid true crime fan, I have a unique recommendation for you.
It's a channel by YouTube personality Bailey Sarian. Bailey has a series of videos she calls Murder, Mystery and Makeup. Although it sounds like a strange combination, she skilfully mixes makeup tutorials with true crime stories - and I am so here for it.
As a true crime... enthusiast (is that the right term?), I have a few other picks for you, such as;
- The Ted Bundy Tapes (Documentary)
- Unsolved Mysteries (TV Series)
- True Crime Island (Podcast)
- Casefile True Crime (Podcast)
- True Blue Crime (Podcast)
Bridgerton
Spotted. Everyone talking about that Bridgerton show. It may be the hot topic on everyone's lips, but only the members of Manhattan's Elite know that I was the real O.G.
xoxo Gossip Girl
If you'd like to check out some other shows and movies that may tickle your fancy, here are some other suggestions;
- Downton Abbey (TV Series)
- Younger (TV Series)
- Pride and Prejudice (Movie)
- Waterloo Road (TV Series)
- Dash and Lily (TV Series)
So there you have it, 60 recommendations to delight all your senses - from me to you.
I really hope you find a treasure here, and give something new a chance.
