Netflix's New Wave that we j'adore!

Regardless, Netflix being inspired by already made films doesn't take away any excitement from the new hybrid movies; it' offers an entirely new fresh perspective regardless if it might remind you of old-time classics.

Netflix is not only a huge success but has revolutionised the entire film industry. Netflix has created history and already made one of the most iconic contemporary series and films in the recent past and continues to do so. Such as The Stranger Things, The Queen's Gambit, Velvet Buzzsaw, The Good Place, The politician and many more etc. Netflix's made such a huge impact that made the whole film industry restructure and follow 'Netflix's lead. In response, Apple and Amazon got into the film industry too.

We can easily say that Netflix created almost its own genre, a new hybrid of films and series. What's interesting with Netflix's originals series and films is that it has a nostalgic feel. It might remind you at some point of some influences from the classics, but it's different, in a good way, almost like a mood board or a collage of all of our favourites iconic movies that we watched. Regardless, Netflix being inspired by already made films doesn't take away any excitement from the new hybrid movies; it' offers an entirely new fresh perspective regardless if it might remind you of old-time classics. The reason why we love Netflix's content that much than we end up binge-watching is because it's relatable to a new WOKE contemporary audience. Perhaps it's because it may include essential conversations that are more open towards mental health, feminism, diverse cast, or the LGBT community.

People usually would ask me for film recommendations; I would be to a go-to person, a human IMDb. However, it may be tricky sometimes. When I am asked to give a film recommendation, most people tend to ask, 'What's the best series or movie you've seen'? However, I know that they don't want my actual answer by suggesting and showcasing my knowledge and selecting a high artistic value film. Instead, I would ask what's the movie they would watch now that they have already seen before? This way, I can find out what they actually want to see and what they are in the mood. It is mostly about nailing a vibe and find out what the watcher is nostalgic for. So the best way to find what you actually are craving to watch is by referring to an old film and seeing a film influenced by that movie. Therefore, my new film suggestions would be some of the Netflix originals. Which are mainly influenced by the classics.

I will list some iconic contemporary series and their influence next to them, so a reader will know the film's mood or vibe.

1. BEHIND HER EYES

During this lockdown, you might need something intriguing and intense to kill the lockdown boredom. Also, something that will give a kick and some excitement to your current okayest life you are having, am I right? Well, If you like a combination of Psychological thriller and love Jane Eyre, an old-time gothic classic. Then, you will absolutely adore a new Netflix original mini-series, Behind Her Eyes. This new hybrid has a unique creepy plot twist and a love triangle that will absolutely blow your mind just like Jane Eyre did in the last century, but BETTER! Behind her Eyes is set in the modern age; we follow a life of a woman that just got a job in the psychological clinic and realises her new boss, a psychiatrist, is a guy she met a previous night is the bar. Even though they had a fantastic connection, he is distant towards her. She soon realises he is married, but that's not where the mystery ends. Surprisingly there is so much to this story; it even has supernatural elements involved and perhaps the best plot twist I've seen in a while. I can proudly say Behind her Eyes has a plot twist of the year!

2. LUPIN

If you are still looking for engaging content filled with tricks and witty schemes that will catch your attention, don't go anywhere. The next nerve-racking show I would like to recommend is Lupin. The new Netflix original starring a well known French actor, Omar Sy. The series reminds me of a combination of movies inspired by masterminds tricksters. One of them is Leonardo DiCaprio in Catch me if you can, the anonymity that appears in V in V for Vendetta, or as George Clooney in Ocean Eleven. The show is inspired by beloved french fiction protagonist Arsene Lupine, a trickster. The main character in the series is Assane Diop, known for his charisma and witts. He plans a robbery of a national treasure displayed in the Louvre, a royal neckless of Marie Antoniette that was lost for 25 years and put for an auction. His plans are unpredictable, and when you think you might know what the story is, Lupin will prove you wrong. As the story unfolds, you will see that he is fighting for a much significant and more prominent cause, trying to meet justice that was never served in the first place. The story engages with complex topics such as the government's abuse of power and influential people in society. That's why I am comparing Lupin with V for Vendetta because it has the same passion and a strong sense of justice. Even though V for Vendetta is based in the futuristic setting, Lupin is similar to V for Vendetta because Lupin is a trickster with a good cause, just as V was in V for Vendetta.

3. THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY

If you are a fan of Tim Burton films and fantasy action films, I would say that The Umbrella Academy is a perfect match. It's basically a Netflix version of Tim Burton's Miss Peregrines's Home for Peculiar Children's, a fantasy mysterious story but 'cooler' because it has a more contemporary tone, making it more exciting. I know Tim Burton's movies are very distinct genre to themselves. What makes The Umbrella Academy so 'Netflix original' and different, because it is filled with lively, sarcastic, moody, funny and spontaneous characters, which millennials could relate to much more than Tim Burton's movie characters, for instance. However, it stills shares a very mysterious tone as in Tim Burton's films. The Umbrella Academy is a Netflix series that involves orphan children born with magic powers worldwide until one billionaire decides to adopt seven of such children. Their guardian unexpectedly dies, and the academy starts to fall apart because of their power dynamics and differences. Just as in Miss Peregrine's Home for peculiar children's, a guardian, miss Peregrine's has a hidden orphanage to protect the world from finding out the orphan's secret powers. Both stories are dealing with orphans with superpowers that are struggling to keep their community strong.
