The crisp air of autumn gentle covers the neighborhood as brown leaves rest on the streets. Kids are dressed up for trick or treating on a night when they should remain safely at home in the “not so quiet town” of Haddonfield. Haddonfield is haunted by a dark history and the night of costumed fun is the one night when no one is safe. On this night the maleficent Michael Myers emerges from a flame engulfed house and continues on with his quest: to kill as many people as he can. But for what? Is it to finish off what he started with Laurie, the original character from the first films dating back to 1978 (played by Jamie Lee Curtis, yes even today)? To finally put an end to her? Or is there a deeper reason for his slashing spree? In Halloween Kills, we find out the motive behind Michael and learn more about the evolving history of the Halloween film saga.

The main plot of film begins where it ended in Halloween (2018), however it is not necessary to rewatch the film (or films, for that matter) to know what is going on. Even if you are not familiar with the Halloween series of films, Halloween Kills does an excellent job of filling you in on the history. Truthfully speaking, it appears the purpose of the film was to provide the audience with the history of all the Halloween films up to date in order to reboot a series that started well over a decade ago and keep it fresh for a new generation.

The film lives up to the slasher standard with a kill count that would make Freddy Krueger look friendly. The special effects team did an excellent job in making each kill as realistic as possible. Translation: not the film for those with a weak stomach for gore. It was surprising to see just how much stronger Michael has become over the years of the franchise, making one wonder: why is Michael so strong? It’s almost as if he’s not even human. The answer to this important question is revealed at the end of the film, so hang on and pay attention to the plot.

The film did have a few slow moments. There were moments of dialogue that didn’t really need to be in the film. The film would have still made sense without those conversations, unless…you are a die hard Halloween film fanatic. Keeping in mind that it’s more of a history lesson than anything else, this may be why the dialogue was left in the film, to provide the audience with historical background on the characters that some are still familiar with. Some of the scenes felt more like a “blame game” than adding to the plot.

Another interesting added aspect of the film was watching the affects of Myers’s presence on the older citizens of Haddonfield. In contrast, there is a scene depicting in ignorance and innocence of the younger generation. Refocusing back on the older citizens, the film shows the slow development of exasperation in the people who have been terrorized by the memory of Myers transforming them from being peaceful to almost maniacal in the hunt for Myers’s demise.

My personal thoughts:

Overall, I did enjoy the film. It was a refreshing reboot to the franchise, as I am sure Myers will pop back up again in the future. Aside from the slow moments of conversation between certain characters, the flow was also pretty decent. There was one character which may throw the audience off because of their role in the film. This would be where watching the 2018 film would help in understanding where the character came from. If you are watching the series for the first time, then the character’s appearance will be a mystery and stay that way throughout the film. The character does have a critical role to understanding the town’s feelings about their history, although it may be subtle until near the end of the film. I do recommend watching “Halloween Kills” if you have enjoyed the franchise, or just slasher films. You will not be disappointed.
