Numbers 5 to 1

Continuing on from my previous post, these are numbers five to one of my favourite television shows!

5) 'Misfits'

(From left to right - Nathan Stewart- Jarrett, Robert Sheehan, Lauren Socha, Antonia Thomas, Iwan Rheon)

After being struck by lightning, a group of ‘Misfits’ (get it?) partaking in community service discover they have superpowers. Not your average superhero franchise, but these young people end up dealing with situations that they never thought they would. A dark comedy show which is so out there, that it seems almost normal? Oh, and the best line from the show is "SAVE ME BARRY!" So listen for it and once you’ve watched it, you’ll understand. Absolute comedy gold. Seasons one to three are the standouts, and when the show was in its prime. Joseph Gilgun as ‘Rudy’ had the biggest job taking over as one of the male leads from Robert Sheehan’s ‘Nathan’, who is arguably one of the best parts of the show. However, Gilgun absolutely nails it and fits right into the group. This group consists of Simon (Iwan Rheon), Alesha (Antonia Thomas), Kelly (Lauren Socha), and Curtis (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett). It’s just pure genius.

FAVOURITE EPISODES: Season 3: Episode 6, and Season 1: Episode 6.

4) 'My Mad Fat Diary'

(From left to right - Ciara Baxendale, Sharon Rooney, Dan Cohen, Nico Mirallegro, Jordan Murphy, Jodie Comer, Darren Evans)

A BAFTA nominated series set in Manchester, which is my favourite accent so I instantly took a liking to it. The show revolves around the life of Rachel ‘Rae’ Earl (Sharon Rooney), who is struggling with various mental health problems. She is befriended by a group of ‘cool’ kids and eventually falls in love with one of the characters in the show. In fact, it's the one you least expect. Also starring Nico Mirallegro as Finn Nelson (swoon) and Jodie Comer as Chloe Gemell, this show is a beautiful reflection of how a person's personality and the way they treat others is way more important than how they look, and to not judge people based on first perceptions because a lot can be going on behind closed doors.

FAVOURITE EPISODE: Season 1: Episode 1.

3) 'Peaky Blinders'

(From left to right - Aimee Edwards, Joe Cole, Jordan Bolger, Sophie Rundle, Paul Anderson, Cillian Murphy, Helen McRory, Finn Cole, Natasha O'Keeffe, Harry Kirton, Kate Phillips).

Delving into the life of the Peaky Blinders gang in Birmingham from the 1920s, we are introduced to the highly intelligent but cunning boss Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and his family. Season one is based around Chief Inspector Campbell (Sam Neill) looking to get rid of the gang off the streets of Birmingham for good. Seasons two and three are based on the Peaky Blinders attempt to expand their business, both nationally and internationally. Then finally, season four is to do with the rivalry between the Peaky Blinders and the New York gang led by Luca Changretta (Adrien Brody). This show deals with violence, death, romance, grief, and vengeance, but most importantly, their family bond. With an incredible cast including Tom Hardy, Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, Annabelle Wallis, Joe Cole, Finn Cole Sophie Rundle, Adrian Brody, and Jack Rowan, this programme is one that EVERYONE should watch.

FAVOURITE EPISODES: Season 1: Episode 6 and Season 3: Episode 2.

2) 'Skins'

(From left to right - Merveille Lukeba, Ollie Barbaeri, Lily Loveless, Luke Pasqualino, Kaya Scodelario, Jack O'Connell, Lisa Backwell, Kathryn Prescott, Megan Prescott, Klariza Clayton.)

A phenomenon with the younger generation, and still as relatable now as it was ten years ago when generation one premiered, it follows three generations of students through their two years at college, focusing on their relationships, mental health, drug and alcohol abuse, and how they cope with it all. There is a real lack of representation of young people and their lives on television, and I think Skins is one of the only reflections which even though is clearly dramatized, is so relatable to the younger generation and it has probably helped a great deal of people with similar issues to those on the show. None of the young actors in this show, except for Nicholas Hoult as ‘Tony’ in generation one, had any professional acting experience. Most of them were found through open auditions, which reflects the authenticity of their performances. This is one of those shows I could re-watch over and over (I’ve watched the whole show four times through, I’m not obsessed though, haha…).

FAVOURITE EPISODES: Season 2: Episode 10, Season 3: Episode 8, and Season 6: Episode 1.

1) 'Game of Thrones'!!!

Jason Momoa, Emilia Clarke, Nikolaj Coster - Waldau, Peter Dinklage, Jack Gleeson, Lena Headey, Aidan Gillen, Mark Addy, Alfie Allen, Issac Hempstead Wright, Sophie Turner, Michelle Fairley, Maisie Williams, Richard Madden, Sean Bean, Kit Harrington).

I’m not going to say much about this one, because I’m sure everyone has heard of it. But just, watch it. It’s incredible. I love it. The writing, the actors, the visuals, everything. The worst part is there is only one season to go. I want it to just keep going, but everything needs an ending. But just to fill you in: You will hate Joffrey and Cersei, learn to love Jamie, and be in love with Daenerys, Jon, Tyrion, Robb, and Hodor forever and ever. The other characters are sort of make your mind up yourself kind of characters so when you’ve watched it and made your mind up about the 500-ish characters in the show, then let me know (#TeamBolton). It hasn’t received 38 Primetime Emmy awards and become a global phenomenon for nothing!

FAVOURITE EPISODES: I can’t choose one. They’re all my favourite.

SO THERE WE HAVE IT! My complete list of my ten favourite television programmes ever. There's a lot more that I wish I could have mentioned, but these are definitely the ten that stood out to me. Thanks for reading!
