My Top 5 Surprising Gems On Netflix
There's something for everyone to enjoy.
Warmer weather is coming, spring is here, and summer is right around the corner. So, it's important to know what's worth your time when you sit down to enjoy some Netflix. Here are my most recent discoveries and recommendations for your viewing pleasure.
The Postcard Killings
For lovers of mysteries, particularly murder mysteries, Jeffrey Dean Morgan gives a strong performance as a grieving New York detective. His daughter is murdered brutally while on her honeymoon. Not long after, a Swedish art critic, Dessie Larsson, receieves a postcard and learns that coupoles are being ruthlessly butchered across Europe.
This is a hidden gem of a movie for fans of mysteries, but moreso for fans of Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who became extremely popular after portraying the beloved father of Sam and Dean Winchester. Then, he stepped into the iconic role of Negan on the Walking Dead. Morgan is a great character performer, and The Postcard Killings gives him a chance to flex his acting chops.
Nobody 2
Bob Odenkirk plays Hutch Mansell, a guy who appears to be just a regular Joe. As a workaholic assassin, Hutch decides it's time to take his wife (Connie Nielson) and kids on a much needed family vacation. Unfortunately, for Hutch, he isn't able to escape stumbling into a corrupted theme-part he loved as a kid, a dirty cop, and a ruthless crime boss (Sharon Stone).
Since seeing Nobody, and its success, it's obvious to anybody that's a fan of movies, Odenkirk's simple man look gives people a chance to feel connected to the hero of hte story. The high octane action, dry comedy that works, and misfit group of cast mates, all come together in a fun combination that works.
HIM
Fans of horror, and of the supernatural, are going to love Marlon Wayans and the cast of HIM, as it explores a dark place in popularity, in football, and in the selling of souls for fame and fortune.
Him follows an up and coming football star, (Tyriq Withers) Cam Cade, training at a strange compound of the aging, nearly done with the game quarterbak, played by Damon Wayans.
The shock factor, and surprsingly good story and performances by the cast, make this arguable one of my favorite watches in recent months.
In The Shadow of the Moon
The year is 1988, and people are dropping dead. They're brains bleed out of every hole in their face. A Philadelphia cop, Thomas Lockhart (Boyd Holbrook), chas down the suspect. The suspect, a younger black woman get's killed at a train stop, after telling Lockhart things about him she couldn't have known.
When there's a copycat nine yuears later, Lockhart looks at keys taken in 1988 that are to an aircraft made in 1996. As Lockart continues to put the pieces of the puzzle together, a physicist believes he's got a clue that Lockhart and his partner ignore.
Crimes through the years like the first murders drive Lockhart into 2006, as an alcoholic private investigator. Still working the case, obsessed by the woman who keeps appearing, he now believes the physicist, Dr. Rao, is involved.
In The Shadow of the Moon is a thinker, as you watch them jump across a 20 year gap in time, chasing the same killer that died when the train struck and crushed her. A surprisingly intriguing movie.
A Man On The Inside
If you're looking for something to watch, but don't have the two hours to sit down that a movie usually requires, there are bingeable shows that will keep you coming back.
Ted Danson stars in A Man On The Inside. The story is about an older man, lost in the world, after a relatively good but normal life. He partners with an investigative service tasked with finding stolen goods in a retirement community. Learning to deal with people again, dealing with being a widower, and trying to rebuild his relationship with his daughter and her family, Danson learns the finer art of infiltration and finds lasting friendships in the process.
Anybody who liked the iconic movie Cocoon will enjoy A Man On The Inside because it has the right mixture of intrigue, comedy, mystery, and a degree of cute that is undeniable.
These are my current recommendations if you're going to hit the couch and enjoy some time relaxing, watching a movie, or checking out a series that will help you to escape from your daily life.
It's time to Netflix and actually chill, instead of the other version.
