It all started 10 years ago with Robert Downey, Jr. starring in a role that was essentially perfect for him as Tony Stark, the "genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist." What came of that, however, was both an amazing fan base and a continuation of films that not only brought viewers the stories of infamous comic book heroes, but also a universe of amazing and powerful characters that everyone would connect to in some way.
Infinity War is the not-so-much conclusion to a decade's worth of individual stories, it is more like a second beginning. Although the events of the ending made it seem as though there was no hope for futures for the heroes, it was made clear that certain events had to happen in order to get the desired result of a win for the Avengers.
This film was more than just a movie to a lot of viewers, and there is a reason why it was so big at the box office: these characters mean so much to the fans. Throughout the film, we get to see the development of a team between characters we could never imagine meeting; Thor meeting the Guardians, Dr. Strange meeting Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, as well as Steve Rogers, Natasha, and Falcon meeting King T'Challa and the rest of the Wakandan's.
Not only did the film contain a very large amount of heroes, its story was just as packed. The antagonist Thanos is a new kind of villain for the MCU, and he is by far the strongest that the heroes have seen. This point is made clear immediately when Thanos easily pummels the Hulk so furiously that he turns back into Bruce Banner. This sets the stage for the villain to work his way to the Avengers and, according to his plan, destroy them.
This film presented fan favourites of the MCU against an all-powerful foe. The ending left off with many questions unanswered, paving the way for the next film in the long line of future motion pictures. It presented new sides of characters that makes you want to know more about them; Gamora's troubled past and how she came to be Thanos's daughter, Shuri's intelligence and talents with everything technological, and what Vision could have become without the portion of his personality being attributed to one of the stones.
Skipping to the end of the film, and hoping that the outcome of this film will soon make sense along the way, Infinity War brought action, an amazing story, and heartbreak all in one sitting. Peter's farewell to Tony, in my opinion, represented how close we have all come to these characters, and just how upsetting their departures can really be.
From the Iron Man, to the First Avenger, Thor, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Black Panther, and many others, Marvel has brought to the silver screen beloved characters that are cast so perfectly that they almost seem real. The MCU has created a family that is made of both heroes and fans alike, and it is a bond that has lasted for 10 years in the making, and will last for many more years to come.
