Anime Review

I got recommended My Hero Academia a few times but never got around to watching it. Finally, I said screw it and played episode 1 to see what all of the hype was about. I was hooked!! I watched all 5 seasons with 120 episodes, and 3 movies in 10 days. Yes, I am insane, and yes this is one of my new favorite anime of all time now. Let's get into what makes My Hero Academia a show worth watching.

*Spoiler Free Review*

Storyline: The superhero-loving Izuku Midoriya is without power in a world populated with superhumans. However, after the quirkless dreamer, Izuku inherits the powers of the world's best superhero, All Might, his hopes of becoming the top hero are now possible. Once enrolled in the high school for heroes, U.A., Izuku soon discovers being a hero is much more complicated than it appears.

Season 1 - 13 episodes

In season 1 we are introduced to young Midoriya and his dream to be a hero, like his role model all might. In a world full of quirks (Special abilities) Midoriya is born without any quirk. Without any power, his dream of becoming a hero is crushed.

This season is inspiring to say the least! Watching Midoriya work so hard without power to accomplish his dream, determined to be accepted to the number one hero school U.A. without a quirk. It is an extremely touching season about having a pure heart, intentions of saving others, and the work ethic to reach any dream no matter how far off it seems.

The whole season is entertaining character development and personally is one of my favorite seasons. It's a strong intro to the series.

Season 2 - 25 episodes

After getting introduced to the main character Midoriya, Season 2 takes the time to introduce you to every character in Class 1A. You are introduced to a bunch of characters with different personalities, quirks, and backgrounds. Young and untrained quirks are being pushed to the limits in a fun sports event.

The writers are genius to make such a wide variety of characters, in such a large group of students, teachers, heroes, villains, and other characters they take the time to build a connection with each character. You can't help but fall in love with a character or 4 haha

This season doesn't start the storyline but is still super entertaining.

Season 3 - 25 episodes

We are starting to get into some real fights. We get introduced to the villains and how dangerous they are. Their purpose is to only destroy, we don't learn much about the backstory of the villains yet, except the fact they are here and building something big.

Now that the school is under attack the classes must go under intense boot camp training and start learning how to push their quirks to the limit. We see our characters learn amazing new ways to use their quirks.

Their training is put to the test when villains attack their boot camp with a drug to make them more powerful. This might be one of the most intense fights Midoriya is in. My heart was racing and I couldn't stop watching.

They also get the opportunity to advance their hero careers by getting provisional licenses. But the test turns out harder than expected. Will they all pass?

The first 2 seasons were mostly about character introduction and development, they sure do know how to pack on the attack in this season.

My Hero Academia: Two Heroes Movie

Storyline: The climactic finals are over, and U.A. is getting ready for the summer training camp. Deku and All Might receive an invitation from a certain person to go overseas to a giant artificial moving city called I-Island. This island, a kind of “science Hollywood” that gathers the knowledge of scientists from around the world, is holding an exhibition called I-Expo showcasing the results of quirk and hero item research. In the midst of all this, Deku meets a quirkless girl named Melissa and remembers his quirkless past. Out of the blue, the impregnable security system the island boasts is hacked by villains, and all the people on the island are taken as hostages! Now, a plan that could shake hero society has been put into motion! The man who holds the key to it all is the number one hero and Symbol of Peace, All Might.

I watched this after I finished season 3, and I think it should be watched after season 3 episode 20: Save the world with Love. This movie picks up right after this special episode. It is a filler movie. I didn't see why it was turned into a movie when it could have just been another episode. With that said it was fun. I just didn't get the purpose behind it and found it hard to understand the reason for making it into a movie. This was my least favorite movie.

Season 4 - 25 episodes

This was my favorite season. The first half of this season is the most intense storyline. With back-to-back epic fights and plot twists, you will be on the edge of your seat the whole time. After the most heart-racing storyline in the series, they completely switch gears and you watch the characters prep for the school festival.

I love watching the side characters getting their opportunity to shine and after all the trouble that class 1A has gone through, watching them have fun and be kids is extremely entertaining.

My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising Movie

Storyline: Class 1-A visits Nabu Island where they finally get to do some real hero work. The place is so peaceful that it feels like a vacation—until they’re attacked by a villain with an unfathomable Quirk! With All Might retired and citizens’ lives on the line, there’s no time for questions. Deku and his friends are the next generations of heroes, and they’re the island’s only hope.

I loved this movie. It is so fun to see the heroes using their licenses to do some good on a small island. They take no time to bring on the action in this movie. We watch Bakugo and Midoriya get over childhood rivalries and fight a villain way out of their league.

Make it! Do-or-die survival training - 2 Episodes

These are a few special episodes that are worth a watch. Class 1A is powerful but lacks teamwork and the ability to not destroy everything in their battles. It's a couple of episodes jam-packed with action and much-needed lessons.

Season 5 - 25 episodes

Let's go class 1A vs class 1B, in an all-out exercise to see which class has learned the most in their first year at U.A. It's super interesting to see characters put in groups they aren't used to and see them strategize their quirks. We get to see the power of class 1B and Shinso who is testing into joining the hero courses.

The second half of the season is all about the villains and is extremely epic. Watching heroes fight villains is cool but you can see they hold back to not hurt those around or damage too much property. Villains go all out and aren't afraid to cause a mess. We see two groups of villains go into an all-out battle for dominance of the underworld.

We also get a glimpse into the villain's past and their goals for the future. It is an intense and extremely interesting story arc. Ending on an extreme cliffhanger I can't wait to see what the heroes are going to do.

My Hero Academia: World's Heroes Mission Movie

Storyline: When a sinister organization threatens to wipe out all superhuman powers, the fate of the world is on the line. With two hours until the collapse of civilization, Deku, Bakugo, and Todoroki manage to work as a team, but there’s still one problem. Deku’s on the run for murder.

Seeing the characters not only face a new threat but also fight in a new country is very interesting. I am not exactly sure how this lines up with the story but I have a feeling it will in season 6. I enjoyed this movie and the new characters it introduced.

How is My Hero Academia a brilliant story?

First of all, there is such a wide variety of characters. With a cast of such unique characters and a world of unique quirks, it is impossible for you not to relate to a character. It allows them to give lots of episodes on character backstories and development without being repetitive. Even though Midoriya is technically the main character, taking time to learn about and have you fall in love with so many characters allows you to be both entertained and more invested in the storyline.

Second is the story build-up. I mean we are going into season 6 and we are just now getting into the story. Mixing in story build-up in small story arcs is a genius move. There are so many things that make you curious about what will happen next, that you can't help but click the next episode.

The final point I will make is the ability to keep your attention. I, unfortunately, get bored very easily, I have a bad habit of watching short anime. I like fast pace stories, and straight-to-the-point character development, and find that anime longer than 25 episodes drag things out and lose my attention. The writers of My Hero Academia are genius, they keep things fast pace and leave episodes on cliffhangers to make you want more. I have never binged this many episodes in such a short amount of time. The fact they kept my attention for this many episodes is extremely impressive and says a lot about the creators of this show.

RATINGS:

IMDB: My Hero Academia: 8.4/10

ANIMEPLANET: 4.2/5

My Review: I am obsessed!! I cannot wait for the release of the season coming out in Oct. 2022. The story, character, and creativity are unmatched. I loved every minute of every episode. I highly recommend watching it as soon as possible.

I give My Hero Academia 5 stars
