Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Muthal Pakkam, including the serial killer’s identity, Nandini’s tragedy, and the final twist.

Muthal Pakkam Story Explained

Muthal Pakkam begins with a disturbing murder near a pond. Police arrive with a German Shepherd and discover a badly mutilated body. The victim’s face has been destroyed, making identification almost impossible.

Near the body, investigators discover a blood-covered stone that appears to be the murder weapon. A police officer also finds a ring nearby, possibly belonging to the killer.

It initially looks like a straightforward clue, but the truth turns out to be much more complicated.

Meanwhile, the story introduces Prabha, the son of a famous crime writer who specialized in killer psychology. His father’s books were so insightful that police officers had reportedly used his theories to solve real cases.

After his father’s death, Prabha travels to Chennai when a team wants information for a documentary about the celebrated writer. There he meets Neeta, who is working on the documentary material.

But Prabha has another ambition. Inspired by his father, he has always wanted to use his observational skills to solve actual crimes.

He soon gets exactly that opportunity.

Prabha Proves His Investigative Skills

After accidentally becoming involved in a jewellery theft investigation, Prabha meets police officer Ramesh.

While travelling with Ramesh, Prabha notices what appears to be the scene of a road accident. Ramesh initially assumes that the victim died after crashing his bike while drunk.

Prabha immediately disagrees.

He observes that the motorcycle does not have the expected accident damage. He also notices alcohol on the victim’s body but not around his mouth, suggesting someone poured alcohol over the corpse after death.

His conclusion is shocking: the man was murdered and the killer staged the scene as an accident.

The forensic report later supports Prabha’s deductions.

Using fingerprints and careful questioning, Prabha then discovers that the victim’s wife and one of his business partners were secretly involved with each other and had murdered him together.

Ramesh is amazed.

Realizing how valuable Prabha’s mind could be, he asks him to assist with a far more dangerous investigation—the mysterious murders frightening the entire city.

The Serial Killer’s Victims Have One Hidden Connection

Another body is discovered with the same disturbing pattern.

This time the victim is a young woman named Shaja, who worked as a reporter.

At first, the victims appear completely unrelated. They studied at different colleges, lived different lives and had no obvious personal connection.

Police begin to believe that a serial killer is choosing random targets.

Prabha thinks differently.

He believes the killer knows exactly whom he is murdering.

The ring discovered near an earlier body initially leads police to a man named Motilal. However, Motilal reveals that his ring and watch had been stolen months earlier—and that he had already reported the theft.

Prabha realizes the killer deliberately planted the jewellery.

Instead of accidentally leaving evidence behind, the murderer is creating false evidence to waste the police’s time.

That discovery proves that the killer is intelligent, organized and planning several steps ahead.

The Monster Energy Drink Clue Changes Everything

The major breakthrough comes from an apparently insignificant detail.

Prabha notices the letter “M” on an energy drink bottle and remembers a similar mark that Shaja appeared to make with her fingernail before dying.

Prabha investigates the connection and learns that Shaja had previously covered a state-level athletics competition sponsored by the drink company.

That event becomes the key to the entire mystery.

Prabha and Ramesh visit the stadium and discover that thousands of students had attended the competition. A security guard then remembers a serious incident that happened there.

A man had followed a young woman toward the changing area and tried to sexually assault her.

Other students rushed to her rescue.

Several of them brutally beat the attacker, leaving his face severely injured. Shaja was also present and participated in confronting him.

Suddenly, everything makes sense.

Every murder victim was connected to that incident.

The victims were not random.

The killer had been hunting everyone who attacked or humiliated him that day.

Why Is the Killer Murdering the Students?

The killer’s motive is revenge.

After being badly beaten at the stadium, his face was permanently damaged. His fiancée also abandoned him after learning about his actions.

Instead of accepting responsibility for what he had done, he blamed everyone else for destroying his life.

He kills his fiancée and then begins tracking down the people involved in the stadium incident one by one.

That is why the victims appear unrelated during the early investigation.

Their connection exists in the past.

Prabha finally understands that the police are not dealing with a murderer selecting random victims. The killer already has a specific revenge list, meaning anyone still alive from the stadium confrontation could become his next target.

But while the police begin closing in on him, another tragedy completely changes Ramesh’s life.

Why Did Nandini Die?

Ramesh’s daughter Nandini suddenly jumps from her college terrace and dies.

Her death devastates Ramesh.

Initially, Prabha suspects that the serial killer may have targeted Nandini because Ramesh was investigating him.

But this assumption is wrong.

The truth about Nandini becomes the foundation of Muthal Pakkam’s biggest ending twist.

Nandini had befriended a student named Arjun, believing that he genuinely needed help with his studies.

Arjun eventually tricks her into leaving the college area.

His friend Kaushik, the son of a powerful minister, arrives in a car. The two young men sexually assault Nandini inside the vehicle.

In one especially painful moment, their car reaches a police checkpoint where Ramesh himself is working.

Nandini tries to alert her father, but she is prevented from making a sound. Ramesh unknowingly lets the vehicle continue.

Nandini later tells her family what happened.

Ramesh wants justice, but Kaushik’s political connections make it extremely difficult for him to take action.

Things become even worse when Arjun and Kaushik begin blackmailing Nandini with a recording of the assault, threatening to circulate it unless she obeys them.

Unable to cope with the continued abuse and threats, Nandini dies by suicide.

Her death changes Ramesh—and it also changes Prabha.

How Do Prabha and Ramesh Trap the Serial Killer?

Prabha creates a plan to lure the killer into the open.

Police spread false news that Arun, one of the people connected to the stadium incident, has received a scholarship and will soon leave for America.

As expected, the killer becomes furious and goes after Arun.

A chase follows.

Prabha eventually confronts the killer, but the physically stronger murderer initially escapes.

Police later discover additional bodies inside an abandoned factory connected to his crimes.

Eventually, Prabha follows the killer into an old building and fights him again.

This time Prabha gains the upper hand and throws him from a window.

The killer survives the fall but is critically injured and hospitalized.

Police announce that the terrifying murderer has finally been captured.

At this moment, viewers could easily believe that the mystery is over.

It is not.

Muthal Pakkam Ending Explained: Prabha’s Secret Plan

The final reveal completely changes our understanding of what happened inside the abandoned building.

After learning what Arjun and Kaushik had done to Nandini—and how political influence prevented Ramesh from obtaining justice—Prabha decides that the normal legal system will not punish them.

So he creates his own plan.

Prabha secretly captures the serial killer and keeps him restrained inside the building.

He then kidnaps Kaushik.

Using Kaushik, he brings Arjun to the same location.

Prabha finally gives Ramesh the opportunity to confront the two people responsible for destroying his daughter’s life.

Overcome with anger and grief, Ramesh kills Arjun and Kaushik.

But now they have another problem.

How can they hide two murders committed by a police officer?

That is where Prabha’s real intelligence—and the darkest part of his character—is revealed.

Who Really Killed Arjun and Kaushik?

The serial killer did not kill Arjun and Kaushik.

Ramesh killed them.

Prabha then arranged their bodies to resemble the serial killer’s previous victims.

Because the real killer had already murdered several people using a recognizable pattern, police naturally assumed that Arjun and Kaushik were simply his latest victims.

Prabha effectively uses one criminal’s murder spree to hide another crime.

Even more cleverly, he behaves in front of the other officers as though he is still searching for the serial killer.

Later, when he enters the building and publicly confronts him, nobody realizes that Prabha had already captured him earlier.

Why Does Prabha Make Sure the Killer Dies?

There is one final risk.

If the serial killer survives, he could tell investigators that he never killed Arjun and Kaushik.

That statement could reopen the investigation and eventually expose Ramesh and Prabha.

Prabha therefore injures the killer in a way that leaves him alive temporarily but ensures that he will not survive long enough to reveal the truth.

The killer later dies in hospital.

With his death, the only person capable of exposing Prabha’s deception disappears.

Officially, the case is solved.

Unofficially, two murders attributed to the serial killer were actually part of Prabha and Ramesh’s revenge.

What Does the Ending Mean for Prabha?

The ending makes Prabha far more complicated than the typical brilliant detective hero.

Throughout most of Muthal Pakkam, he uses observation, logic and psychological understanding to uncover criminals.

But in the final act, he crosses the same boundary he had been helping police protect.

He does not simply solve a murder.

He creates the perfect cover-up.

Prabha understands criminal psychology so well that he can manipulate an active serial-killer investigation and make police believe exactly what he wants them to believe.

For Ramesh, the plan gives him the justice that the legal system could not provide for Nandini.

For Prabha, however, it marks a transformation.

He begins the story dreaming of following his father’s legacy and helping police solve crimes.

By the end, he is officially welcomed into the police team—but neither his new colleagues nor the public know what he has actually done.

That irony makes the climax much darker.

Muthal Pakkam Final Scene Explained

In the final scenes, a press conference is organized after the serial-killer case is considered solved.

Ramesh receives praise for successfully ending the investigation.

Instead of accepting all the credit, he publicly acknowledges Prabha’s contribution.

He explains that Prabha’s intelligence and courage played an essential role in solving the case.

Prabha is then officially included with the team so that he can continue helping them investigate future crimes.

His dream has finally come true.

But viewers now know something the police do not.

The brilliant investigator joining their team has already proved that he is capable not only of solving crimes—but also of hiding one almost perfectly.

That final contradiction is what gives Muthal Pakkam its most memorable twist.

Prabha enters the investigation as the son of a legendary crime writer.

He leaves it as something far more dangerous: a man who understands both sides of a crime scene.
