Why Was Kamran Sent to Pakistan?

The story is set around the growing tension between India and Pakistan before the 1965 war.

Indian intelligence officer Moorthy becomes increasingly concerned after one of India's agents operating in Pakistan is exposed and killed by Colonel Zaidi. Intelligence suggests that Pakistan is preparing something significant, possibly involving tanks and military movement, but India does not yet have enough concrete information to understand the complete plan.

Moorthy realizes that they need another operative inside Pakistan.

His age would now be approximately the same as Kamran's.

That missing child was Harfan Bukhari.

Indian intelligence therefore decides that Kamran will enter Pakistan pretending to be Harfan, the long-lost survivor of the Bukhari family.

Before leaving, Kamran learns everything he can about the family, their neighborhood and their history. He needs to be convincing enough to survive questions from relatives, police officers and intelligence officials.

Kamran accepts the mission with surprisingly little visible fear.

That confidence becomes one of his greatest weapons.

Kamran Enters Pakistan

Kamran crosses the border and immediately proves why Moorthy selected him.

During security checks, he realizes that carrying a knife could create suspicion. Thinking quickly, he secretly places it inside the belongings of someone traveling in the opposite direction.

Once inside Pakistan, however, Kamran notices someone following him.

The man works for Colonel Zaidi, who already suspects that India may have sent another intelligence operative following the death of the previous spy.

Kamran attempts to escape but eventually gets into a fight with his pursuer. Just when the situation becomes dangerous, another man intervenes.

That man is Alam, an Indian operative who has already been secretly living in Pakistan.

Kamran is not completely alone.

Harfan Bukhari Returns Home

Kamran eventually reaches the Bukhari family and introduces himself as Harfan.

Naturally, the family does not immediately believe him.

But Kamran has been thoroughly prepared. His knowledge and evidence are convincing enough that the elderly woman in the family accepts him as their missing relative.

Even when the police investigate him, Kamran survives their questioning and is eventually allowed to return.

Kamran Gets Close to Israr

Kamran understands that discovering military secrets requires access to powerful people.

That opportunity comes through Israr, an influential car dealer with connections to several important figures.

At first, Israr refuses to employ him because there is no vacancy. Conveniently, however, one of his employees has an accident, creating a temporary opening.

Kamran gets the job and quickly proves that he is an unusually talented salesman.

When a customer tries to negotiate a lower price for a car, Kamran cleverly challenges the man's ego by suggesting another vehicle that appears more appropriate for his budget. Offended by the implication that he cannot afford the expensive car, the customer immediately buys it and even pays extra.

Israr is impressed.

Kamran has taken his first major step into the network he needs to infiltrate.

Smuggling Becomes Kamran's Way Inside

Kamran soon discovers that Israr and people connected to him are involved in illegal smuggling.

Instead of avoiding this dangerous world, Kamran deliberately makes himself useful.

He claims that he understands smuggling routes and knows ways goods can be transported without paying duties.

This information makes him valuable.

Soon Kamran is introduced to Inspector Habib and other influential figures. They test his claims, including asking him to make contact with people in Kashmir. Technical problems almost expose him, but eventually the communication succeeds.

Their doubts disappear.

Every successful lie pushes Kamran deeper into their organization.

And every step closer also makes escape more difficult.

Colonel Zaidi Suspects Kamran

Colonel Zaidi never completely stops searching for the mysterious Indian spy.

Eventually Kamran is captured and brought before him.

Zaidi wants to know who he really is.

This is one of the most dangerous moments in Kamran's mission because even a small contradiction could expose his entire identity.

However, another investigation into Kamran's supposed family history confirms that the Bukhari family really did suffer a fire and that a young child survived.

The information supports Kamran's cover story.

Zaidi's suspicions temporarily disappear, and Kamran is released.

His fake identity has now survived one of its biggest tests.

Kamran Starts Gathering Real Intelligence

Once the criminal and military networks begin trusting him, Kamran's mission becomes more serious.

He and Alam use hidden recording equipment to collect conversations involving influential Pakistani figures.

At a party, Kamran secretly hides a recording device near people discussing important deals. The plan nearly collapses when the device is discovered accidentally, forcing Kamran to improvise and recover it without exposing himself.

Why Does Kamran Get Close to Begum?

Kamran discovers a photograph of Begum and realizes that she may provide access to information unavailable anywhere else.

He approaches her using something personal: music.

Kamran possesses an album that Begum does not have, and his apparent admiration convinces her that he is simply a devoted fan.

Their meetings gradually become more personal.

Begum begins trusting him.

Eventually, the two become emotionally close.

But Kamran's intentions are complicated.

For Begum, the relationship becomes real. For Kamran, it began as part of an intelligence mission.

The Locket Reveals Pakistan's Secret Plan

Alam gives Kamran a special locket containing a hidden microphone.

Kamran secretly places it around Begum's neck.

Because Begum is married to a senior military officer, conversations happening around her can now be secretly monitored.

This finally gives Kamran and Indian intelligence the breakthrough they were searching for.

Pakistan is preparing an operation against India.

The same secret routes that had been used for smuggling are now intended to be used for something much more dangerous. Armed infiltrators can enter Indian territory using those routes, while military forces and tanks are also being prepared for a larger confrontation.

Even more dangerously, the people planning the operation want Kamran himself involved because they believe Harfan is an experienced smuggler who understands the route.

The Indian spy has accidentally become trusted enough to help lead the operation being planned against his own country.

Why Does Kamran Kill Begum?

Kamran later learns that he might not be included in the mission.

This creates a major problem because being part of the operation would give him direct access to the information India desperately needs.

Desperate to obtain the plans another way, Kamran and Alam go to the Major's house.

Kamran enters secretly and photographs maps revealing the routes that Pakistani tanks and forces are expected to use.

Then Begum sees him.

At that moment, Kamran faces an impossible decision.

If Begum exposes him, his identity will be destroyed, the intelligence operation will collapse, Alam could be compromised, and crucial information may never reach India.

Kamran pushes Begum down the stairs.

She dies.

This is not presented as a triumphant spy moment. It emotionally destroys Kamran.

Outside the house, he breaks down in front of Alam. He says that this is not the person he believed himself to be. Begum had done nothing wrong, yet his mission forced him into a situation where he killed her to protect his cover.

Alam Is Captured

Begum's death makes the Pakistani authorities even more suspicious.

Meanwhile, Alam returns to the Major's house to retrieve the hidden locket.

Kamran Finally Gets the Mission

Just when Kamran believes he may have lost his chance, Habib unexpectedly arrives.

Kamran learns that he has not actually been removed from the upcoming operation.

He is still going.

That means he can finally reach the most important stage of his mission.

Using coded communication, Kamran sends vital information back to India. The message initially appears difficult to understand, but Moorthy recognizes what Kamran is trying to communicate.

India now knows the direction from which the attack is expected.

The final part of Mukhbir: The Story of a Spy connects back to the opening events.

Kamran is discovered by Indian soldiers after becoming separated during the dangerous operation. Because he is disguised and operating under another identity, the soldiers initially do not know whether they can trust him.

Kamran gives them a code and asks them to contact Moorthy.

Eventually he manages to reach safety and contact his handler.

But danger follows him even after he has crossed back toward Indian protection.

Someone is still hunting him.

When Kamran finally meets Moorthy, a gunman suddenly opens fire and Moorthy is shot.

Kamran manages to save him and gets him medical help.

Most importantly, Kamran delivers all the intelligence he collected during his time inside Pakistan.

His mission is finally complete.

Did Kamran's Mission Help India During the War?

The story then jumps forward by six months.

Moorthy explains the importance of the information Kamran recovered.

According to the story, the intelligence supplied by Kamran helped India understand what was coming and prepare accordingly. Moorthy tells him that because of the information he brought back, the conflict lasted only 17 days instead of potentially continuing for months.

This is the real payoff of Kamran's entire journey.

Everything he suffered suddenly has a larger meaning.
