Movie Review: Malcolm and Marie
This romantic drama film stars Emmy winner Zendaya and John David Washington stars as a couple testing their relationship in a black and white visual effect.
Emmy-Award Winning Zendaya and Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominated John David Washington star as a couple, Malcolm, a filmmaker, and his girlfriend Marie testing their relationship this time shot in a black and white visual effect.
When I saw this movie trailer, I have to say it looks like a short film that’s already telling the story to or a Calvin Klein ad except there's no boxer product.
Warning: there is some spoilers spill in this review.

The movie opens in a luxurious California home with glass windows on a dark quiet evening like 1 am filled with crickets chirping until a car arrives at the house. Filmmaker Malcolm (played by John David Washington) and his girlfriend Marie (played by Zendaya)are both dressed elegantly coming back from the movie premiere enters the house. Marie dash to the bathroom to piss while Malcolm turns on the music and fix himself a drink. The camera was angle from outside of the house moving directly at what's going on inside the house.
After Marie was done, she goes outside smokes a cigarette while Malcolm dances to the music, brag about how proud he has accomplished on his film, how critics and audience love his film, and being compared to black directors like Spike Lee, Barry Jenkins, and John Singleton (pretty much-being obnoxious if you ask me.) After Marie was done smoking her cigarette, she cooks his dish macaroni and cheese while looking disappointed at Malcolm.
In the next scene, they get into an argument when Marie was pissed at Malcolm for not mentioning her in his speech and uses her life in his film without her permission. After the argument was done, they made up and things got all hot and sentimental. After they were done making out, she went outside to take a piss behind the tree which was weird that she did.
In another scene, they argue again this time bringing up Imani, his film character inspired by Marie's life, Malcolm brought up her drug past, self harm, and her time in rehab.
The most awkward scene when Malcolm and Marie dressed in her undershirt and underwear outside of their house smoking while listening to Dionne Warwick "Get rid of him" not exchanging no words until Malcolm got pissed after the LA times reviewer gave a good review that made him irate and goes berserk which was confusing and hilarious.
In the end, Marie delivers the most incredible monologue on how Malcolm should say in his speech mentioning her and appreciating her which was emotional to Malcolm and Marie. The ending sequence was absolutely moved shot in a mirror shot showing Malcolm and Marie in a different kind of camera angles in the bedroom. Throughout the ending sequence, jazzy romantic music is played through the scenes making it calm, quiet and patient.
Honestly, Here's What I Think Of This Film...
In the words of Marie calling Malcolm's film is "beautiful". I would like to say she is right on that however it doesn't seem like it fits for a film, it seems like it fits for a theatrical one-act play. I'll admit Marcell Rév's cinematography has an incredible camera direction. John David Washington's and Zendaya's character as Malcolm and Marie are the perfect epitomai of a toxic verbal abuse relationship. They did an outstanding performance playing their roles in this film. The film's soundtrack fits throughout the whole film. To be honest, I like everything about this film but it looks like it could fit for a Broadway play.
