Mollywood Times Movie Review: A Malayalam Gem That Celebrates the Dream of Making Cinema
A deeply emotional Malayalam drama about a young filmmaker’s dream to create the world’s greatest horror movie. Mollywood Times explores passion, failure, friendship, and the hidden struggles behind making cinema.

Malayalam cinema has always been praised for its suspense thrillers, but the real magic of this industry is not just the suspense. It is the human drama, emotions, realistic characters, and the deep connection with everyday life that makes Malayalam movies loved not only in India but across the world.
And now, Hotstar has brought another Malayalam film that celebrates the love for cinema itself. Released with Hindi dubbing, Mollywood Times is a nearly three-hour cinematic journey that will make you fall in love with movies all over again. From the very first scene, there is hardly a moment where you feel that watching this film was a mistake.
Remember Premalu, the small-budget Malayalam film that became a massive success and earned over ₹130 crore? The actress became a sensation and started gaining fans across different industries. Now, it is time for the hero’s comeback with a character that feels extremely relatable.
This film is for every person who has ever dreamed of doing something extraordinary in life. Because somewhere in childhood, all of us have thought the same thing — “Just let me grow up once, then I will change the world.”
That dream is the heart of this story.
The film follows a young boy who grows up reading comics and dreaming of becoming someone special. He wants to create something so powerful that the entire world recognizes his talent. He wants people to see him like a real-life superhero. Then one day, he gets a camera, and his biggest dream begins — making a horror film that can scare the entire world.
The ambition is simple but beautiful: create the world’s greatest horror movie from the Malayalam film industry.
Interestingly, even one of the most iconic horror movies, The Sixth Sense, was directed by a filmmaker of Malayali origin. It shows how deeply creative storytelling has always been connected with this community.
The director of Mollywood Times also brings that same passion. The film cleverly explores the struggles behind filmmaking — the failures, competition, jealousy, and the battles that happen behind the camera.
One character, especially, will make you angry. Not because the performance is bad, but because the writing is so effective. Through small gestures and clever moments, the film shows how sometimes the biggest challenges are not outside enemies but the people around us.
The biggest mystery of the film remains: Will the child who dreams of making the world’s scariest movie actually achieve his dream? Or will he become just another forgotten person whose story is used by someone else to win awards?
That question keeps the audience invested throughout.
The biggest strength of Mollywood Times is that it is completely unpredictable. You will not easily guess where the story is going or how it will end. The film takes its own time to build emotions, characters, and situations.
However, this is not a typical feel-good movie. It explores the tragedies, struggles, and painful moments of a filmmaker’s life. It can make you emotional and sometimes even uncomfortable. But the lead actor’s performance brings a unique balance. His expressions and timing add humor and freshness, making the serious moments easier to connect with.
This film is strictly for people who truly love cinema. Those who have grown up watching movies every week and understand the passion behind creating a film will connect with this emotional journey.
The story moves like a roller coaster, filled with failures, unexpected twists, emotional highs, and a powerful climax where the real villain of the journey is finally revealed.
Another positive point is the Hindi dubbing. It has been done surprisingly well. At many moments, you might forget that the original film was not made in Hindi.
Comedy, tragedy, success, failure, and dreams — everything comes together in this cinematic experience.
My rating for Mollywood Times would be 3 out of 5 stars.
It is definitely a good experiment and a strong attempt. However, somewhere in between, there is still a feeling that something was missing. The slow pace may test your patience, and you might feel that adding a few more elements could have turned this into a true classic.
But if you love cinema, this film deserves a chance.
