Miss Piggy and Kermit Break Up: Real or Publicity Stunt?

Miss Piggy shocked the world when she took to Facebook and announced that her on-going love affair with Kermit the Frog has tragically come to an end.

After careful thought, thoughtful consideration and considerable squabbling, Kermit the Frog and moi have made the difficult decision to terminate our romantic relationship. We will continue to work together on television (“The Muppets”/Tuesdays 8pm this fall on ABC) and in all media now known or hereafter devised, in perpetuity, throughout the universe. However, our personal lives are now distinct and separate, and we will be seeing other people, pigs, frogs, et al. This is our only comment on this private matter… unless we get the right offer. Thank you for your understanding.

But, has it REALLY?

The timing

This news comes just a little more than a month before the premiere of their new show on ABC, The Muppets. While there has been quite the buzz about it so far, there was very little known aside from the fact that it was going to be an Office-style show. The show is meant to be "unscripted" which means that what is being discussed is "really happening."

Seeing other people already?

During Comic-Con, there was a 10-minute clip shown of how they pitched the show to ABC, which included the news that Miss Piggy and Kermit had split and that they were each dating new people.

While it is perfectly normal to date other people soon after a break-up, the clip was presumably shot before Comic-Con. However, here we are a few weeks later and we are just getting the announcement. Why not let us know that it was happening sooner? Who is this swine Denise who came between them? How awkward will things be now that they are all back on set and working together?

Shirking responsibility?

Miss Piggy also had to abandon a movie project to make time to come back to the Muppets for their new show. While working on it, sources have said that she was getting very cozy with co-star Topher Grace. I'm not sure that Miss Piggy will be getting very much work now that she abandoned a project, so it seems as though she had to be very confident in herself and her place within the group to leave other projects behind for a new show.

What will happen to their significant others?

Topher seemed exceedingly happy, posting a picture with Miss Piggy on his Twitter back on July 27th, with a link to the preview of the show. While there is no confirmation of their relationship status, I think we can all agree they do look rather cozy here. There has been confirmation that Topher WILL be appearing in the pilot episode, however, nothing beyond that. How will Tophiggy survive? Will Topher go into a jealous rage over Kermit? These are the things I need to know!

While there is still no further news on the matter from any of the parties involved, it does seem as though there will be a lot of explanations come September.
