Mirzapur: The Movie Trailer Review – Can This OTT Hit Create Bhaukaal in Theatres?

Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu and Ravi Kishan bring Mirzapur to the big screen, but the biggest question remains: did this popular OTT franchise really need a movie?

The Mirzapur: The Movie trailer is finally here, and after watching it, I have two completely different reactions. First, the trailer itself is not bad at all. In fact, it contains almost everything that fans expect from the Mirzapur universe — power struggles, violence, family politics, revenge, larger-than-life characters and, of course, plenty of bhaukaal.

But there is still one question in my mind: Why did Mirzapur need a theatrical movie?

Mirzapur became one of the shows that helped popularise Indian streaming crime dramas. Its first season, in particular, created an impact that is difficult to forget. However, after multiple seasons on OTT, taking essentially the same world to cinemas feels like an interesting but risky experiment.

Mirzapur Is Going Bigger, But Is It Going Different?

The makers are promoting Mirzapur: The Movie as a new big-screen story rather than simply another season of the series.

The film is directed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna, while Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar are among its producers. It is scheduled to release in cinemas on September 4, 2026, in Hindi and Telugu.

From a theatrical point of view, the trailer certainly tries to increase the scale.

The guns are bigger, the confrontations look louder and the familiar fight for power appears more cinematic. Yet the basic flavour remains exactly what people associate with Mirzapur.

And that can work both for and against the movie.

Fans will immediately feel at home, but viewers hoping for a completely fresh reinvention may wonder what makes this story important enough to experience in a theatre instead of waiting for streaming.

Munna Bhaiya, Guddu and Kaleen Bhaiya Bring Back the Nostalgia

One of the strongest things about the trailer is seeing familiar characters again.

Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Divyenndu return to the world that made Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu Pandit and Munna Bhaiya enormously recognisable characters. The film also features Jitendra Kumar and Ravi Kishan among its large ensemble cast.

And yes, Munna Bhaiya's presence is going to be one of the biggest attractions.

There is something instantly entertaining about watching these characters return to their old games of power and survival. Even the familiar background music creates more nostalgia than I expected.

That surprised me because Mirzapur is not some decades-old franchise returning after twenty years. Still, its music and characters have become so closely associated with the early Indian OTT boom that hearing those sounds again does create a certain feeling.

Ravi Kishan and the New Rajasthan Angle Could Be Important

For me, one of the more interesting parts of the Mirzapur movie trailer is Ravi Kishan.

The story appears ready to move beyond the familiar streets and political territory we already know, with desert locations and new players entering the fight for power.

This is where the movie has an opportunity to justify its existence.

If the filmmakers use the new characters and expanded setting to reveal a genuinely different side of this universe, the film could become more than just an extended Mirzapur episode designed for cinemas.

The marketing repeatedly emphasises an “untold story,” and that is exactly what I want from this movie.

Give us something we could not simply get from another season.

Jitendra Kumar in Mirzapur Is an Unexpected Sight

Another fun surprise is seeing Jitendra Kumar in this violent world.

For viewers who strongly associate him with completely different characters and relatively grounded stories, watching him enter Mirzapur's world of gangsters and power politics feels unusual.

And sometimes an unexpected casting choice is exactly what a familiar franchise needs.

The movie already has plenty of established Mirzapur faces. A few characters who bring a different energy could prevent it from feeling like a simple reunion special.

But Will Mirzapur Fans Actually Go to Theatres?

This is the biggest challenge.

Mirzapur built its fanbase on streaming.

People became accustomed to watching the show at home, consuming several episodes together and discussing the shocking moments online. Moving that audience from their sofas to cinema halls is not automatically going to be easy.

That is why Mirzapur: The Movie's box-office performance will be fascinating to watch.

There is clearly a huge fanbase. But having millions of streaming viewers and convincing those viewers to purchase cinema tickets are two very different things.

The trailer therefore needs to sell one idea above everything else: this is not merely another Mirzapur chapter that happens to be playing in theatres. It needs to feel like an event.

Final Thoughts: Good Trailer, But I Still Need a Reason to Be Excited

As a trailer, Mirzapur: The Movie works.

There is action, suspense, crime, family conflict, power politics, memorable characters and the same unapologetically chaotic atmosphere that made the series popular.

So my problem is not with the trailer.

My question is whether this movie can offer enough new material to justify moving Mirzapur from OTT to the big screen.

If the “untold story,” Ravi Kishan's character and the expanded setting genuinely take the franchise somewhere unexpected, I could easily change my mind.

For now, I am curious rather than extremely excited.

Mirzapur: The Movie releases in theatres on September 4, 2026.

What about you? Did the Mirzapur: The Movie trailer make you excited enough to watch it in a theatre, or would you rather wait and watch it at home?
