Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Mirage, including its ending, alternate timelines, murder mystery, and the true identity of Inspector Leyra.

Some time-travel movies entertain us with spectacular technology and futuristic worlds. Mirage, however, takes a much more emotional approach. It uses an old television, a video camera, and a violent electrical storm to connect two people living 25 years apart.

What begins as a supernatural conversation soon turns into a complicated mystery involving a murdered woman, a missing daughter, an altered marriage, and multiple versions of the same reality.

By the time the final twist arrives, almost everything we believed about the story has changed.

The Tragedy That Started Everything

The story begins in 1989, when a powerful storm is expected to last for 72 hours.

A young boy named Nico is recording himself playing guitar when he hears an argument inside his neighbour’s house. Curious and frightened, Nico enters the property and discovers that Hilda has been killed.

Her husband, Prieto, appears while holding a knife. Nico panics and runs into the street, where he is struck by a car and dies.

Prieto is later arrested for Hilda’s murder. However, Nico’s death becomes the event that shapes everything that follows.

Twenty-five years later, a woman named Vera Roy moves into Nico’s old house with her husband David and their daughter Gloria. While renovating the property, Vera and David discover Nico’s television, camera, and videotapes.

During another storm identical to the one from 1989, the television suddenly becomes a connection between the past and the present.

Vera can see Nico—and Nico can see her.

Vera Saves Nico and Accidentally Erases Her Own Life

Vera realises that she is watching Nico on the night he is supposed to die. She warns him not to leave the house and tells him that he will be killed if he goes outside.

At first, Nico does not believe her. Vera proves that she is speaking from the future by predicting that lightning will strike his school clock the following morning.

Her warning works. Nico survives the car accident.

However, saving him creates an entirely different future.

When Vera wakes up, she is no longer a nurse. Everyone knows her as a successful doctor. David does not recognise her as his wife, and Gloria does not appear to exist.

Even the school has no record of her daughter.

Vera has not simply changed one incident. She has entered a timeline in which her original relationship with David never happened. Without that relationship, Gloria was never born.

This becomes the emotional centre of Mirage. Vera has saved an innocent child, but the price is the disappearance of her own daughter.

The Murder Mystery Remains Important

While desperately searching for Gloria, Vera also investigates what happened to Hilda.

In the altered timeline, Prieto was never convicted of murder. The official story claims that Hilda left him and moved away. Prieto later married Clara, the woman with whom he had been having an affair.

Vera remembers the original timeline and knows that Hilda was murdered. She tells Inspector Leyra that Prieto may have hidden Hilda’s body inside his slaughterhouse.

The police search the location and discover a suitcase containing human remains.

The investigation reveals that Hilda had returned home unexpectedly and caught Prieto with Clara. During the confrontation, Hilda was fatally stabbed. Prieto and Clara then covered up the crime by creating a false passport and making it appear that Hilda had left the country.

A watch marked with Clara’s initials also proves that she was present on the night of the murder.

The discovery confirms that Nico had been telling the truth for years.

Inspector Leyra Is Actually Nico

The biggest twist arrives when Vera discovers that Inspector Leyra is the adult version of Nico.

After surviving the accident in 1989, Nico spent years trying to prove that the mysterious woman on the television was real. Almost everyone believed that he had imagined the entire experience.

However, Nico never completely stopped searching for her.

As an adult, he eventually found Vera at a railway station. In this altered timeline, the two met, fell in love, and built a life together.

That is why Inspector Leyra seems strangely interested in Vera’s unbelievable story. He already knows that time can be changed because Vera was the woman who saved him when he was a child.

Nico initially hides the truth because he loves Vera and does not want to lose the life they created together.

Unfortunately, Vera cannot fully remember that life. Her mind is filled with memories from the original timeline, where David was her husband and Gloria was her daughter.

Why Vera Jumps from the Building

Nico tries to convince Vera to accept their relationship. Some of her memories with him begin returning, and it becomes clear that they were genuinely happy together.

Still, Vera chooses Gloria.

She believes that Nico has kept the old television and camera because he cannot completely destroy the connection to his past. Vera asks him to use the device and correct the timeline.

When he refuses, she jumps from the building.

Vera’s action is not simply an attempt to escape. She knows that Nico loves her and will not accept her death. By sacrificing herself, she forces him to contact his younger self and change history again.

Nico rushes to the hidden television equipment and communicates with his childhood version before the storm ends.

The film does not reveal every word spoken during this conversation. However, Nico clearly gives his younger self the instructions required to create another timeline—one in which Vera, David, and Gloria can remain together.

Mirage Ending Explained

When Vera wakes up again, David is beside her and Gloria is safely sleeping in her room.

Her family has returned.

However, this is not exactly the original timeline. It is a newly created version of reality produced by Nico’s final intervention in 1989.

Vera still remembers the murder and knows that Prieto and Clara escaped punishment. She therefore visits the slaughterhouse and helps the police discover Hilda’s remains.

Inspector Leyra arrives at the crime scene, but this version of Nico does not appear to remember his relationship with Vera.

Vera recognises him immediately.

The final moment suggests that although their shared life has been erased, some connection may still exist between them. Nico sacrificed his own happiness so that Vera could be reunited with her daughter.

How Many Timelines Are There?

The story presents at least three major realities:

The first timeline: Nico dies in 1989. Vera later marries David and has Gloria.

The second timeline: Vera saves Nico. Nico grows up, finds Vera, and becomes her partner. David marries another woman, and Gloria is never born.

The final timeline: Adult Nico contacts his younger self and changes history again. Vera returns to David and Gloria, while the truth about Hilda’s murder is finally uncovered.

The movie deliberately leaves some of its time-travel rules unexplained. The storm acts as a temporary bridge between timelines, while Vera’s consciousness and memories appear capable of moving between different versions of her life.

Final Thoughts

Mirage is not only a time-travel thriller. It is also a story about memory, parenthood, sacrifice, and the consequences of trying to correct the past.

Vera saves Nico because it is morally right, but doing so destroys the life she values most. Nico later returns that sacrifice by giving up his own relationship with Vera so that Gloria can exist again.

The ending is bittersweet rather than completely happy. Vera gets her daughter back, and Hilda finally receives justice, but Nico loses the future he spent years trying to protect.

That emotional cost is what makes the final twist so powerful.

Rating: 8/10

Mirage is highly recommended for viewers who enjoy intelligent time-travel mysteries, alternate timelines, emotional twists, and endings that require close attention.
