Maury Povich Show Comes to an end

On Monday March 21st, Emmy nominated TV talk show host announced that he is retiring as talk show hand the ending of his popular TV talk show after 31 years and 31 seasons.

Maury Povich Statement:

"Six years ago when I was ready to retire, my the NBCUniversal family asked me to continue the show. Even though I told them I was ready for assisted living, out of loyalty to NBCUniversal and my more than 100 staff and crew members, Tracie Wilson and I agreed to one more deal. I'm so proud of my relationship with NBCUniversal and all those who worked on the "Maury" show but as I occasionally tell my guests on 'Maury,' 'Enough, already!'"

The "You Are The Father" veteran TV host has been making many success for the past 31 seasons in his talk show than Jerry Springer (before his talk show premiered on September 30, 1991), Bill Cunningham and Steve Wilkos. From opening the yellow manilla envelope to reveal DNA test results, reading and unveil lie detector results, out of control sex crazed teenagers, shocking life changing secrets, and to many other segments on the show.

Before we retire the Maury show and leave it in the tv talk show past. Let's look back on the memories on how the Maury show started, how the show gained its popularity and what do I think of his retirement.

Humble Beginnings

Born in Washington DC in a Jewish family, Maury's father, Shirley Povich was a sports columnist and reporter until his retirement in 1972. Maury graduated from the Landon School in 1957 then enroll at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1962 with degree in television journalism. Povich landed his first job at Washington radio station WWDC, where he did publicity and worked as a reporter. By 1966, he was a news reporter and sportscaster for WTTG, the independent station owned by Metromedia. In 1967, he became the original co-host of the station's popular midday talk show, Panorama.

36 year old Maury Povich interviewed musician/lyricists Barry Louis Polisar on Panorama in 1975.

A Current Affair

After hosting Panorama from 1967 to 1970s, he gained national fame hosting on news program A Current Affair in 1986. He hosted on the show until 1990.

The Beginning of the Maury Show

On September 1991, The Maury Povich Show distributed by Paramount Domestic Television in partnership with his own production company, MoPo Productions, from 1991 to 1998.

Though he received some criticism by calling the show "trash tv show", Maury show has made Maury Povich into a iconic TV host legend. R&B singer Syleena Johnson made a song called “Maury Povich” for her album Chapter 4: Labor Pains.

Maury has made appearance on TV shows and films like The Jack and Trumiph Show, South Park, How I Met Your Mother, Madea's Big Happy Family, and The Swinger. His show was reference on Norbit.

He collaborated with Grammy winner Lil Nas X and Youtuber Tana Mongeau making faux "fake" episodes.

In my opinion, I am truly saddened that has to come to an end. It's too bad I never got a chance to come to the show live and in person. I was so close until the covid pandemic took over. Dammit!!!

But I must say Maury has been on TV for a long time maybe it is time for Maury give the baton for the next future "Maury" host. I wish he could have stay for at least for few seasons but it is what it is. I'll never forget watching the show when I was six living in Arkansas and my family would watch television on the Antenna (at the time my mom couldn't afford cable). I would watch part of the and I would always love when Maury says "YOU ARE THE FATHER" and watching the crowd cheer. It was one of my favorites.
