Malam Terlarang, also known as Forbidden Nights, is a disturbing Malaysian folk-horror movie that combines supernatural terror, family secrets and political ambition. The story follows Mawar, a young woman who begins investigating the mysterious death of her sister, Safar.
What first appears to be a tragic accident soon reveals a horrifying connection to an ancient sea entity named Pamakbul.
The Story Begins with a Sacrifice
The movie opens near a coastal swamp, where a young woman walks towards an ancient ritual platform. A demonic female entity possesses her, cuts open her stomach and removes something from inside.
The entity calls it the “first sacrifice.”
The story then shifts to Omar, a popular local politician preparing to compete against a powerful leader named Wahid. Omar lives with his wife, Sarimah, their daughters Safar and Mawar, and his respected father, Mokhtar.
Sarimah was once a famous dancer, but she lost the ability to walk after falling from a height. Omar has also become emotionally distant from her.
Meanwhile, Safar begins experiencing unexplained bleeding and supernatural visions. She secretly visits a local midwife named Noni, who gives her a bracelet for protection against evil forces.
What Happened to Safar?
One night, Safar becomes possessed and leaves her house. The following morning, her body is discovered near the swamp. She apparently died after falling onto a sharp wooden branch that pierced her neck.
Everyone believes it was an accident, but Mawar becomes suspicious.
She visits the location where Safar died and discovers her sister’s earring near an ancient ritual platform on the opposite side of the swamp. This means Safar had been at the platform before her death.
Mawar also begins seeing Safar’s ghost inside the family home.
While searching Safar’s belongings, she discovers love letters and photographic negatives. After developing the photographs, Mawar sees Safar with Ghaz, one of Omar’s close associates.
Mawar later finds Safar’s post-mortem report hidden inside Omar’s office. The report reveals that Safar was pregnant when she died.
Believing that Ghaz was responsible, Omar attacks him. However, Ghaz insists that he loved Safar but never had a physical relationship with her.
This means someone else made Safar pregnant.
Who Is Pamakbul?
Pamakbul is an ancient sea goddess who grants people their deepest wishes. However, every wish comes with a terrible price.
Anyone accepting her help must surrender their soul and obey her rules. Pamakbul gives her followers a black substance to consume, after which their wishes may become reality.
Years earlier, Sarimah was in love with Omar, but he married another woman. At the same time, Mokhtar wanted power and dreamed of becoming an influential village leader.
Sarimah and Mokhtar summoned Pamakbul together.
Sarimah wished to marry Omar, while Mokhtar asked for political power. Pamakbul fulfilled their desires, but both became her servants.
The movie strongly suggests that Omar’s first wife died because of this supernatural agreement.
The Truth About Sarimah’s Injury
Later, Safar became addicted to drugs. During an argument, Sarimah tried to convince her to stop.
By encouraging Safar to follow the right path, Sarimah indirectly acted against Pamakbul’s evil influence. As punishment, Pamakbul took away her ability to walk and caused Omar to lose his love for her.
Mokhtar also lost his position and influence.
Instead of escaping the entity, Sarimah and Mokhtar summoned her again. This time, Pamakbul demanded three unborn children as sacrifices.
All three children had to be biologically connected to Mokhtar.
Who Made Safar Pregnant?
The most horrifying revelation is that Mokhtar, Safar’s own grandfather, was responsible for her pregnancy.
Whenever Pamakbul possessed Safar, she lost control of her body. Mokhtar repeatedly abused her during these possessions so that the unborn children could be offered to the entity.
The opening ritual shows Pamakbul removing the first unborn child from Safar.
A disturbing object later seen inside a toilet represents the second sacrifice.
When it was time for the third sacrifice, Noni’s protective bracelet helped Safar break free from the possession. She escaped from the ritual platform and ran through the swamp.
While running, she fell onto the sharp branch that killed her.
Therefore, Safar’s death was an accident, but Mokhtar, Sarimah and Pamakbul were responsible for everything that led to it.
Why Was Mawar Chosen?
Because Safar died before the third sacrifice could be completed, Mokhtar selected Mawar as the next victim.
Safar’s ghost guides Mawar towards the ritual platform and shows her the truth. Mawar finally sees Mokhtar attacking Safar and realises that her respected grandfather is the real monster.
Mokhtar attempts to perform the same ritual on Mawar. Noni tries to protect her, but Mokhtar kills Noni before she can defeat Pamakbul.
Sarimah is also possessed and attacks her own family.
Mokhtar’s Death Explained
At the ritual platform, Mokhtar consumes Pamakbul’s black substance and wishes to rule the world.
Omar arrives and shoots him, but the bullets have no effect because Pamakbul is protecting him.
During the fight, Omar pushes Mokhtar onto a sharp wooden branch. It pierces his chest and kills him.
His death mirrors Safar’s death, making it a form of poetic justice.
Why Does Sarimah Attack Mawar?
After Mokhtar dies, Pamakbul offers Sarimah another deal. Sarimah wishes to regain her beauty and wants Omar to love her again.
In exchange, Pamakbul orders her to kill Mawar.
Sarimah accepts and attacks her daughter. To save Mawar, Omar is forced to stab his own wife.
As Sarimah dies, Pamakbul asks whether she is still her servant. Sarimah says yes, so the entity takes her into the sea along with the ritual platform.
Her body is never recovered.
Malam Terlarang Ending Explained
Pamakbul then offers Mawar her greatest wish: a happy family.
However, Mawar rejects the offer because she understands that Pamakbul’s promises are built on sacrifice, lies and suffering.
Unlike Mokhtar and Sarimah, Mawar chooses painful reality instead of false happiness.
Some time later, Mawar achieves her dream of becoming a journalist. Her first major story investigates the ancient coastal rituals connected to Pamakbul.
Omar is imprisoned while the authorities investigate the deaths of Wahid and Mokhtar. Mawar visits him and gives him the family photograph taken earlier in the movie.
The photograph represents the family they could have been before ambition, neglect and supernatural temptation destroyed everything.
Malam Terlarang ultimately shows that Pamakbul does not force innocent people to become evil. She simply uses their strongest desires against them.
Mokhtar chooses power. Sarimah chooses beauty and love. Mawar survives because she chooses the truth.
