Loving Fate: The Winx Saga

A Netflix Series I Recommend

Allow me to invite you to a world that is mystical, magical, and extraordinary. It is a drama series on Netflix with one season (so far), and it aired in 2020. The series remind me of the Harry Potter stories, only they are not about young wizards. They are about teenage fairies. The series is called Fate: The Winx Saga.

Fate: The Winx Saga is based on Winx Club which was an animated series on Nickelodeon that first aired in 2004. The series is not considered kid-friendly because of the foul language. These are teenagers dropping the F-bombs occasionally. Fate has a mix of genres, and they are horror, drama, fantasy, supernatural, and even a little bit romance. The fairies in the series are not your typical fairies that look like Tinkerbell from Peter Pan. They are not three inches tall, and they do not have wings (yet). They are human size in human form. You can walk by one of them on the street and would not realize that he/she is a fairy.

The series is about these teenagers attending Alfea, a boarding school in the Otherworld. The school teaches the fairies how to control their powers so they can improve them. Alfea has two group of students. They are obviously the fairies and warriors called the Specialists. These warriors work side by side with the fairies to protect the Otherworld and fight the Burned Ones. Who are the Burned Ones? Or I should ask what are the Burned Ones? They are powerful, gruesome monsters that have been around for centuries. Being attacked by one causes a poisonous affect on your body, and the only cure is to destroy the same Burned One that attacked you.

Each character of the series plays a role in shaping the Otherworld. The main character is Bloom who is a 16-year-old fire fairy. When she arrived at Alfea, she felt like a fish out of water. After all, she is from California, a loner, and is surrounded by students with British accents. In addition to that, she never knew she was a fairy until three months prior to her arrival. Sky is a Specialist who is smitten with Bloom since the day she arrived. Aisha is the goody two shoes water fairy who is Bloom’s roommate and best friend. Musa is the mind fairy with powerful empathy. Terra is the earth fairy, and she has an obsession with plants. Stella is the light fairy and the mentor. She is also royalty and Sky’s ex-girlfriend. The air fairy is Beatrix. She has the power to use electricity, and she also has dark intentions. And then you have Miss Dowling who is known as the Headmistress. She is like the Dean of the school, and she genuinely cares about the well-being of the students. And last but not least, Saul is the Specialist coach or instructor, and he is also a father figure to Sky.

Fate: The Winx Saga puts a lot of focus on Bloom. She is known as a changeling which means she was switched at birth with a human baby. Haunting memories and strange discoveries put her on a mission to find out the dark secrets that the school is hiding. While slowly connecting with her new friends and being involved in a love triangle with Sky and Stella, she struggles with figuring out her identity and controlling her raging fire powers.

When I first saw the trailer, I felt that the concept was interesting and different. After I watched the first episode on Netflix, I was so drawn to the series that I binge-watched the whole first season in one day. The first season has only six episodes, so I was able to fit them all in my schedule. I have my reasons for loving this show. First of all, the show started of dark with a killing. Of course, I was so eager to know the who, what and why. I am pleased with the intro of the series. Even though it is very short and simple, it helps me get ready to view the metaphysical world I am about to enter – especially with ethereal music playing in the background. The series has many eerie scenes. The characters struggle with who to trust, and their magical powers are linked to their emotions. Fate: The Winx Saga has cliffhangers that will make the audience watch the next episodes. Also, I really enjoy the chemistry between Bloom and Sky. It is safe for me to say that there will be Season Two, and I am definitely looking forward to another round of binge-watching.
