At the end of May, the third installment of 'Love, Death + Robots', the animated anthology with which its creators are allowed total freedom to explore the terrain of science fiction, landed on Netflix. One of the most striking shorts of this third season is 'Jíbaro', by Spanish director Alberto Mielgo, and from Geeked Week they've shown us a better look at how it was constructed.

Alberto Mielgo won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film for 'El limpiaparabrisas', so there was a lot of anticipation to see his work with his new entry in 'Love, Death + Robots'. The director had already participated in the series before with the short 'The Witness' in the first season of the anthology, and despite having such a high bar 'Jíbaro' also became the perfect snap for the third and also one of the most impactful.

So thanks to a video from Netflix's Inside look, we can see a little more of the creative process until it reached our screens with Mielgo himself explaining the development of his short film:

"I think if you want to do animation for adults, you have to be brave, do extreme things. 'Jíbaro' is a brutal disaster... The first thing I wanted to do is a story without heroes or good characters... just a tragedy. I wanted to talk about the most toxic relationship you can imagine."

In the Netflix video you can see how the animation was done, from the early modeling and animation tests, and through the different states each shot went through. Not only did they use references for the characters, they also looked for real scenarios in which they were inspired for the setting of the short film and to achieve that combination between realism and fantasy.

"The animation looks that rich and real because it's actually filmed with real characters... In my films we work with actors to be able to see their emotions, to record the acting on their faces, and obviously the mechanics of their bodies."

"The intensive work you have to do to be able to create just 15 minutes of animation is crazy. There were 72 of us and it's all done from scratch. You have to design it, model it, make the skeleton.... It's an incredible amount of work."

Love, Death & Robots (stylized as LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS, and represented in emoji form as ❤️❌🤖) is an adult animated anthology streaming television series created by Tim Miller and streaming on Netflix.Produced by Blur Studio, it consists of stand-alone episodes that contain different narrative and animation and are produced by different animation studios from a range of countries, exploring diverse genres particularly comedy, horror, science fiction, and fantasy. Each episode is connected to the themes of the titular subjects matter. However, not every episode includes all three topics. Miller serves as the showrunner and producer alongside Joshua Donen, David Fincher, and Jennifer Miller.

As a group of conquistadors and priests stops their trek deep in the jungles of Puerto Rico, a mysterious woman-like creature draped in gold and jewels emerges from the nearby lake. With her siren-like call, she sends the entire group into a frenzy, causing them to kill each other before drowning themselves in the deep waters. However, the deaf knight Jibaro is unaffected by her and manages to escape in a panic. Intrigued, the Golden Woman stalks Jibaro and even sleeps next to him at night. When Jibaro awakens and realizes her presence, they become infatuated with each other. After a chase ensued between the two, they begin a violent dance and embrace in a kiss. Jibaro knocks her unconscious and rips off most of the gold and jewels from the Golden Woman's body. He discards her into the river and attempts to make off with the loot. The Golden Woman's blood taints the surrounding body of water. When Jibaro drinks from it, his hearing is restored, leaving him vulnerable to the Golden Woman's final call. He follows it and drowns at the bottom of the lake, like the countless men before him.

I think it was the best of the episodes. Visually stunning and emotional depth. Really broke through the visual clutter of today's TV!
