Losing an Angel

Is Logan's priority keeping his money or marrying his love?

The day was Christmas Eve and just about everyone was just finishing up their work at Sky's Chicken Mailers. At the establishment, the packages of prepared chicken were getting sorted to many places (homes, restaurants, shelters, etc.) in many forms (wings, legs, BBQ cubes, even the owner's favorite, buckets of chicken nuggets). As everyone was finishing their shifts, Sky stood on the nearest empty table and grabbed the attention of her employees.

"Alright, everyone! Thank you all for all your hard work this year! We have all outdone ourselves and deserve the Christmas break upon us. But, before we all leave for our our multiple types of families, my nuggets, how about we party on?" she announced.

With the help of several other employees, she brought out some food and other party essentials, especially the stockings filled with party favors that she insisted on working on. It took a while after the music was playing for everyone to shift from "work mode" to "party mode" even though Sky wasn't an uptight boss, but they were able to enjoy themselves for the evening. Well, except for one employee who couldn't seem to get out of "work mode" no matter where he was: the establishment's accountant, Logan Tesla.

Logan Tesla was the kind of person who prided himself in being the top of his class and using his smarts to make it through the capitalism that ran through the veins of society. He used his smarts to keep everyone in check so they won't get too carried away with their income. Even though he earned more than enough as a result, he never saw it as "enough" and it caused his coworkers and boss to worry about him. Not long after the party started, he approached Sky with his signature pocketbook.

"Um, excuse me, Miss Sky. I'm extremely concerned about how this party will impact the budget of this company," Logan told her while working on some calculations.

"Logan, it's fine! These were all donated and paid out of pocket. Take a moment to not see these essentials as dollar signs and more as acts of generosity for Christmas!" Sky assured her accountant.

Logan sighed as he placed his pocketbook in his pants pocket. He never really understood social gatherings since he saw them as time that could be used earning a profit to survive in the world. He looked around intending to fix himself some tea and go to a private spot, but he felt himself being bumped into by someone.

"Oh my gosh! I am so sorry! I think I got carried away!" Logan heard.

As he was regaining his composure, he started to take in the appearance of the man who bumped into him. The man had messy brown hair and glasses similar to his own framing eyes of sweet caramel. He also had freckles scattered on his face that were even more noticeable thanks to the smile bright enough to blind everyone in the city. He could barely hear his co-worker, Terrence, introduce him as Patton Truffle, his roommate, but the accountant and what he assumed to be an angel were too wrapped up in their own world to acknowledge more than their gazes.

For several years, Logan and Patton had been together with enough support surrounding them to make them nearly forget about the existing bigotry. They eagerly decided to get married and Logan promised they would once enough was earned from his new accounting business and Patton's new bakery. It was Christmas Eve when they discussed it once again. Patton would question when they would tie the knot, Logan would express financial concerns, Patton would come up with a solution, and Logan would turn it down. Patton had done his best to be patient for the man he loved, but he could only set aside his own happiness for so long.

"You know, wedding rings don't have to be diamond or pricey. I've heard of a millionaire buying wedding rings worth 90 dollars for her wedding," Patton brought up.

"If we went for a cheap option, it would only be a matter of time before they'd fall apart. Unfortunately, wedding rings are pricey for a reason," Logan countered.

Patton looked down as he faced his beloved.

"I'm willing to bet that even if we got most of the essentials crafted and donated, you still would only focus on how much they'd cost even if we had to spend 5 dollars for the crafting supplies alone," Patton stated.

Logan sighed and grabbed Patton's hands. He witnessed a sad smile and freckles scattered on cheeks as pink as part of his sweater.

"I want us to be married, really, I do. It's just that...there are still a lot to consider and we can't afford to have our dream wedding be chimerical," Logan tried to defend.

Patton released himself from Logan's grip and muttered "Well, I guess I now know where your heart belongs," before he walked away into the blizzard never to be seen by Logan again. It wouldn't be 'til many years later that he'd realize that he made a tremendous mistake.
