On June 9th, 2021, the long awaited Disney+ show 'Loki' made it's debut. It was well received with great reviews and a desire for more. On June 16, 2021 the mysterious Loki variant causing chaos for the Time Variance Agency was revealed to be a female version of the god of mischief from an alternate time line. But the episode that has caused the greatest applause was episode 3 on June 23rd, 2021, when Loki revealed his bi-sexuality.

This came as a huge surprise to many fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but to long time fans of the comics, very few seemed to marvel (yes pun intended), at the reveal of Loki's sexual preferences. The reason for this is because it has been cannon in the Marvel comics for quite some time. More importantly, when Stan Lee first created the character, he kept true with Loki's mythological origins as being more than just a trickster, but also a being who did not discriminate when it came to love or at least the acts of sex.

The proof is in the historical aspects of the mythology. Loki enjoys disguising himself as a woman, including when he spent eight winters as a woman and bearing children, something that Odin himself condemned as perverse. However, Loki points out that Odin's old past travelling as a wizard in it's won his perverse. In fact, Odin could not even begin to judge Loki for the Norse Gods themselves owe Loki for the walls protecting Asgard. This is probably one of the most well known myths of the Loki. A giant who is only known as The Builder comes to Odin in disguise as a meek, humble human and offering his services to build the walls of Asgard. Odin and the other Aesir gods agreed as long as the builder could do it in one year and by himself. The Builder agrees as long as he may use his horse for assistance.

The great stallion Svadilfari and The Builder worked hard together and come close to the completion of the walls. If he finishes his task in the years, the Gods will be forced to pay him an immeasurable sum for his services. Loki takes the form of a stunning mare and leads Svadilfari off to mate with him, forcing The Builder to complete the task alone but not in the time frame he promised. Months later, Loki returns with Sleipnir, the great-eight legged horse who would become Odin's great steed.

Loki's enjoyment for being a woman is also shown in one more tale when Thor lost Mjonir and in order to get it back to the Giants. In order to get it back, Thrym, the Giant King will give it back if Freya will be his wife. When Freya refuses, Loki in his mischievous manner plans to trick Thrym. He disguises himself and Thor as women, Thor the bride, and Loki the bride's maid.

But Loki has also shown his love for women as well. He has three children with the frost giantess Angrbotha. He is the father of Fenrir, the great wolf who is destined to kill Odin, the serpent Jormungandr, who encircles Midgard, and Hel, goddess of death and ruler of the Norse underworld. He had two children with his wife Sigyn, Nafri and Vali as well. Loki enjoys women and men in the Norse Mythology.

Something that has been brought into the Marvel universe. In 2008, at the fall of Ragnarok, Loki overtakes the body of Lady Sif, giving birth and life to Lady Loki. But more recently in 2014 a solo comic book was announced called 'Loki: Agent of Asgard" in which writer Al Ewing confirmed that he would explore Loki's bisexuality and his gender fluidity, including having Loki shifting between genders occasionally.

With these facts in mind, I found it hard to be surprised about Loki's sexuality. Don't get me wrong, I was very excited to have it officially confirmed as it goes in line with his mythological origins. I am happy to see more representation of the LGBTQ+ community in media, and how casual Loki and Sylphie talked about it. Neither one denied their love for both genders and it felt like a conversation that could and should be happening more. One day conversations like that will be the norm, and until that day comes, showing it in media, especially with characters as well loved like Loki, are the best way to love is love no matter what.
