Spoiler Warning: This article reveals the complete story and ending of Life.

What would happen if humanity finally discovered life on another planet, only to realise that the discovery was never meant to reach Earth?

Life begins with a historic NASA mission. A space probe returning from Mars carries soil samples that may contain the first evidence of extraterrestrial life. The sample is successfully collected by astronauts aboard the International Space Station, and the entire world celebrates what appears to be one of the greatest scientific discoveries in human history.

However, the astronauts have no idea that the tiny organism inside the sample will soon turn their station into a deadly trap.

The Discovery of Life on Mars

Scientist Hugh Derry begins studying the Martian soil inside a secure laboratory. At first, the sample appears inactive. After carefully adjusting its temperature, oxygen and atmospheric conditions, Hugh finally notices movement under the microscope.

A single living cell has survived on Mars.

The discovery creates excitement across the space station and around the world. The organism is named Calvin by children participating in a school competition. Calvin initially looks harmless, resembling a small transparent collection of cells.

But Hugh soon discovers something extraordinary. Every cell in Calvin’s body can perform multiple functions. Its cells behave like muscles, nerve cells and eyes at the same time. This makes Calvin extremely adaptable, intelligent and physically powerful.

As Calvin grows, Hugh becomes emotionally attached to it. He sees the organism as proof that humanity is not alone in the universe.

Unfortunately, Calvin is not interested in peaceful scientific cooperation.

Calvin Attacks Hugh

A laboratory malfunction causes Calvin to become inactive. Believing the organism may be dying, Hugh uses a small electrical device to stimulate it.

The experiment awakens Calvin, but it also makes the creature aggressive.

Calvin suddenly wraps itself around Hugh’s hand. The astronauts watch helplessly from outside the sealed laboratory as the creature crushes Hugh’s fingers one by one. Opening the door could allow Calvin to escape, so Miranda refuses to break the quarantine rules.

Hugh eventually pulls his damaged hand out of the containment glove, but he falls unconscious from the pain.

Calvin then breaks the electrical device and tears through the laboratory glove. After escaping its container, it enters the chamber of a laboratory mouse and attacks it. Calvin absorbs the mouse’s body, using it as food to become larger and stronger.

Rory Adams opens the laboratory door to rescue Hugh, but Calvin jumps onto his leg. The others manage to pull Hugh out, but Rory becomes trapped inside.

Rory uses an oxygen candle and a flame device to fight the creature. The fire temporarily drives Calvin away, but it does not kill it. Instead, the heat appears to make Calvin even more aggressive.

Calvin attacks Rory’s face, enters his mouth and kills him from the inside.

The astronauts are horrified as Calvin emerges from Rory’s body, now much larger than before.

Calvin Escapes Into the Station

The laboratory’s fire-control system activates, opening the ventilation system. Calvin uses the vents to escape into the rest of the International Space Station.

The crew attempts to contact Earth, but their communication system has stopped working. Commander Kat puts on a spacesuit and goes outside to repair the damaged transmitter.

While inspecting the cooling system, she discovers that the coolant liquid has disappeared. Calvin has consumed it.

The creature suddenly attacks Kat and attaches itself to her spacesuit. During the struggle, Calvin damages the suit’s coolant system, causing poisonous liquid to fill her helmet.

Kat reaches the airlock, where David is waiting to bring her inside. However, she knows Calvin could enter the station with her. Rather than endangering the remaining crew, Kat closes the airlock from the outside.

David begs her to open it, but Kat refuses.

She sacrifices herself and dies as the coolant completely fills her helmet. Her decision saves the crew temporarily, but Calvin remains alive outside the station.

The Plan to Trap Calvin

The astronauts realise that Calvin needs oxygen, heat and food to survive. They predict that the creature will try to enter the station through one of its thrusters.

Whenever a sensor detects Calvin near a thruster, the crew activates the engine, hoping the flames will kill it. Calvin repeatedly avoids the fire.

The constant use of the thrusters consumes too much fuel and pushes the station out of its correct orbit. Eventually, Calvin finds another route inside.

Hugh suggests removing oxygen from the station. He believes Calvin may enter hibernation, just as it probably did when the atmosphere of Mars disappeared millions of years ago.

The crew seals themselves inside a protected chamber while oxygen is slowly removed from the remaining sections.

During the wait, Hugh becomes weak and collapses. David and Miranda attempt to revive him, but they discover Calvin attached to his leg, feeding on his body.

Hugh already knew Calvin was there but did not tell anyone. His emotional connection to the organism prevented him from exposing it.

The crew drives Calvin away using electrical shocks, but Hugh dies from his injuries.

Fortunately, Calvin accidentally swallows a tracking device attached to Hugh’s body. David and Miranda can now follow the creature’s movements.

They use Hugh’s body as bait and lure Calvin into an isolated chamber. After locking the door, they remove the oxygen from the room.

For a moment, it appears that Calvin has finally been defeated.

Earth’s Secret Containment Mission

A spacecraft suddenly approaches the damaged station. The surviving astronauts initially believe that Earth has sent a rescue team.

Miranda realises the truth.

The spacecraft is not there to rescue them. It has been sent to push the International Space Station into deep space. Earth’s authorities understand that Calvin must never be allowed to reach the planet.

The arriving spacecraft connects with the station, but Calvin escapes during the confusion. It kills one of the astronauts inside the rescue craft and attacks Sho, the station’s systems engineer.

The collision damages the station even further. Oxygen begins escaping, the temperature drops and the entire structure starts falling towards Earth.

Only David and Miranda remain alive.

They know that if Calvin reaches Earth, it could consume animals, multiply and potentially destroy all life on the planet.

David’s Final Plan

David discovers that two escape pods are still operational.

His plan is simple but suicidal. Miranda will enter one pod and return to Earth. David will lure Calvin into the second pod and manually guide it away from Earth into deep space.

David uses heating equipment to attract Calvin. The creature follows the heat and enters the pod with him. Calvin immediately wraps itself around David, but his spacesuit protects him long enough to launch.

Miranda launches her pod at the same time.

According to the plan, Miranda’s pod should travel towards Earth while David and Calvin disappear into space.

But a collision with space debris changes both pods’ directions.

Life Ending Explained

The movie deliberately makes viewers believe that Miranda’s pod is approaching Earth while David’s pod is travelling into deep space.

The truth is revealed during the final moments.

Miranda is actually the one drifting helplessly away from Earth. She screams as her pod disappears into the darkness of space, knowing that no one can rescue her.

Meanwhile, David’s pod lands in the ocean.

Two fishermen approach and look through the window. They see David trapped inside with Calvin wrapped around him. Believing he needs help, they begin opening the pod.

David desperately shouts at them not to open the door, but they cannot hear him.

The fishermen unlock the pod, releasing Calvin onto Earth. More fishing boats can be seen approaching in the distance, suggesting that the creature now has access to unlimited food and oxygen.

David’s sacrifice has failed. Miranda is lost in space, and Calvin is free on Earth.

The ending transforms the astronauts’ historic scientific discovery into the beginning of a possible global extinction event. Humanity wanted proof of life beyond Earth, but the life it discovered may now destroy the entire planet.

Life ends on a dark and disturbing note, reminding us that not every discovery is meant to be celebrated—and some doors should never be opened.
