Lego Minifigures The LEGO Harry Potter Cmf Series 71022 Review Part 1

Today we will be taking a closer look at the LEGO Harry Potter CMF Series set number 71022. This set came out in 2018, has 20 minifigures, and was designed for people 5 and up.

Medium Legs

The LEGO Harry Potter CMF series introduced the new medium sized bendable leg piece. At the time, this was huge. These were a great addition to the LEGO piece catalog but also a much needed update for the Harry Potter theme. With the series following 11 year old children until they turn into 18 year old adults, an in between height was needed. These new legs also allowed builders to have more possibility with their minifigures in their own MOC and stop motion work.

New Wands

Before the reboot of the LEGO Harry Potter theme, our witches and wizards were given 4L bars for their wands. These standard LEGO pieces can be found everywhere, even as lightsaber blades. When this CMF series came out LEGO gave us a brand new mold that looks more like actual wands. Even better, they would come in a variety of colors to represent the individuality of wands in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Harry Potter 71022-1

With the LEGO theme, books and movies named after him, it’s impossible not to include the boy who lived. That is also why he was the very first minifigure in the series. For this minifigure, LEGO dressed him in the Gryffindor school robes. While the design slightly changes, the uniform matches his two best friends, Ron and Hermione, who also come in this set.

He comes with the new medium bendable legs. This particular pair of legs has the bottom of the school robes printed on the top.

The attention to detail is really nice for this torso piece. As the robes roll open at the top, you can see the dark red fabric underneath. The Hogwarts crest printed on the left side feels a little sloppy to me. Especially compared to the clothes we see him wearing underneath. The sweater has individual lines put all along the seams. The tie has the Gryffindor colors in neat stripes. They even took the time to create the collar for this tie to go under. On the back of the torso piece you can see the hood of the robe hanging down.

I was shocked that Harry only came with one facial expression. Almost all Harry Potter minifigures that come in building sets have dual sided printing, so it was surprising that the CMF series would not. The lighting bolt scar, glasses and crooked smile are all well done, but nothing to make it stand out from his figures we have seen in almost every set from the Harry Potter theme.

The hair piece with a part on his right side is a nice mold that can either completely hide his famous lighting bolt scar or slightly reveal it to those looking closely.

Harry comes with two accessories. The newly designed wands are a huge upgrade from the 3L bars that were used before this theme’s relaunch. He also comes with Hedwig. This owl creature piece is nothing special. Chances are you already have it in your collection from other Harry Potter building sets. However, since his friends Ron and Hermione come with their pets, it makes sense to include it with this minifigure.

Hermione Granger 71022-2

Hermione is best friends with Harry and Ron. These three were inseparable during their time at Hogwarts. This hard working student was definitely the brains of the group. Her clever thinking and vast knowledge was invaluable in solving many of the puzzles our heroes need to save the day and often times stay alive.

Hermione was given the new medium legs. The bottom of her robes can also be seen at the top of the legs, but she was given a different design than Harry and Ron. For Hermione, you can see the red underlining as her robes slightly open.

The head piece has only one face printing. Considering her character gets two facial expressions in building sets, I don’t know why LEGO took a short cut here. The expression we do get is well done. I appreciate the small smile and slightly raised left eyebrow. I can picture Emma Watson giving this exact expression in the film.

The long wavy hairpiece is not unique. However, it is the first time it would be used on a Hermione minifigure. It’s nice when LEGO adds these new hairstyles for characters we have seen in dozens of sets. For me the collectable minifigures need to be special and that is extremely difficult for characters that are widely available in other sets.

For her accessories, Hermione was given a new wand and her pet cat Crookshanks. Actually, Crookshanks is half cat and half Kneazle. This highly intelligent pet is a great fit for Hermione and its ability to detect suspicious or distrustful people is very handy with You Know Who and his Death Eaters all about. I am a big fan of the animal creature pieces and I love this new nougat cat. The mouth, eyes, nose and stripes on the forehead look great. While I think this piece by itself is fantastic, I personally don’t see the resemblance to the actual Crookshanks.

Ron Weasley 71022-3

Ron and Harry were instant friends from the moment they met at the Platform 9¾ on their way to Hogwarts. Once Hermione joined the group, these three were inseparable. While Harry and Hermione were new to the Wizarding World, Ron came from a long line and large family of witches and wizards. The Weasley family was well known amongst the wizarding community and Hogwarts.

Ron was given the new medium leg piece. This is the exact same leg piece use for the Harry Potter minifigure.

The legs might be the same, but their torso pieces are completely different despite wearing the same uniform. There is no mixing up these two separate pieces. While Harry is wearing his uniform neatly under his school robes, Ron’s are a mess. His sweater is off and we can fully see his wrinkled white shirt. I love all the details put into his unkept look. The shirt coming untucked at the bottom, a collar not crisply folded and an uneven tie look great. This is a nice character trait of Ron. On the back of the torso you can see the hood of his robe hanging down.

Despite his minifigures always having two facial expression in building sets, this collectable minifigure only has one expression. LEGO did a nice job. They were able to capture Ron’s smile with the closed lip, sideways grin. The classic Rupert Grint smile.

The hair piece might look familiar to LEGO Star Wars fans, because it’s regularly used for Han Solo minifigures. However, this would not only be the first time it was used for Ron but it is also the first time this hairstyle came in a dark orange color to capture that famous Weasley hair.

For his accessories, Ron was given his magic wand and pet rat Scabbers. Of the three pets used for Harry, Hermione and Ron, this was my favorite creature piece. Since Scabbers is actually Peter Pettigrew and integral to the Harry Potter storyline, I am glad LEGO got this piece right. This new piece is a vast improvement over older versions of the character. While the shaggy hair of a rat is hard to create on smooth plastic, the tuft of hair printed on the head does a great job with creating that illusion.

Draco Malfoy 71022-4

Draco Lucius Malfoy is the main antagonist amongst the students of Hogwarts. This school bully comes from a wealthy and powerful wizarding family. He made life very difficult for Harry and his friends during their time at Hogwarts. Thanks to some new brooms and the right connections Draco was able to become the Slytherin Quidditch Team Seeker during his second year at the school. This Draco Malfoy collectable minifigure complimented the Quidditch Match set #75956 that came out the same year as the first Harry Potter CMF series. While the set focused on Gryffindors vs Slytherin, Malfoy was not included. Thanks to the CMF series, builders can now recreate the famous match between Harry and Malfoy.

The short, white non-bendable legs are nothing special. We have seen these for decades and on hundreds of minifigures.

While I appreciate that LEGO keeps consistency within their themes, it was a disservice to a minifigure found in the Collectable Minifigure Series. The printing is amazing. The Slytherin crest on the chest is unmistakable. The front and back of the robes have creases to make it look like loose fabric and LEGO made sure to expose the white lining inside the cloak near the collar in front and the folded hood in back. I absolutely love the detail in the rope that is closing this robe together. However, as the Slytherin Quidditch uniform, the exact same piece is used in the Quidditch Match set that came out the same year. It would be used in future Quidditch sets and sets with stores that sell Quidditch supplies. Currently 3 Malfoy minifigures have this exact torso. The only difference is the other two use dark brown hands and this minifigure was given reddish brown hands for his gloves.

I was surprised to discover that the very short cloth cape made from a spongy stretchable fabric with top holes and teardrop neck cut was only released with 2018 sets. Red capes were produced for the superheroes in the Might Micros theme and Little Red Ridinghood. Draco Malfoy would be the only minifigure to get it in a dark green color. That makes this an original piece.

The single sided head piece is unique to this set. Although dual sided face printings were not common at this point in the CMF series, Tom Felton had so many great expressions that I think a second printing would have improved this minifigure a lot. That being said, LEGO did a great job creating the sneer pattern on his face. The raised reddish brown eye brows, the slight uneven frown and creases along the mouth do a wonderful job capturing that arrogant expression often found on Malfoy's face.

The hair combed from front to rear has been around since 2010 and available in over 130 sets. The bright light yellow color is used on over 30 different minifigures. Although, many of those minifigures are Draco Malfoy. It would be hard for LEGO to find a better headgear piece for the younger Draco and his slicked back, blond hair.

Draco came with a lot of accessories. Like all wizard minifigures, he was equipped with his dark brown wand. He also came ready to play Quidditch. To fly around the field, Draco has a dark green broom. These broom pieces have been around since 1982 and get used a lot in the Harry Potter Theme. Despite its long history, this remains the only time it has come in a dark green color. I like that the color is unique and that it matches Slytherin’s house colors. It might not match the source material, but works for a collectible minifigure. As the Slytherine Seeker, he also comes with a Golden Snitch. The pearl gold winged ball was specially designed for all Harry Potter Quidditch related sets. It’s not unique but looks amazing. Back in 2018, this was the cheapest way for people to get their hands on this amazingly well sculpted piece. There is no doubt what you are looking at when you see this piece in a pile of LEGO.

Luna Lovegood 71022-5

Luna Lovegood was only 9 when her mother died while experimenting with spells. She would be raised alone by her father, who was the editor of The Quibbler. Luna was sorted into the Ravenclaw house. At first, she didn’t have a lot of friends at Hogwarts. Her strange behavior and odd beliefs caused other students to call her “Loony Lovegood”. She would later become close friends with Ginny Weasly, Harry and their Gryffindor crew. She may have given the impression of “distinct dottiness”, but this loyal, brave and talented witch proved her true brilliance time and time again. She was a key member of Dumbledore’s Army and would be one of the co-leaders when the group was restored to fight back when Voldemort took control of the school. She could hold her own against school bullies or death eaters.

Luna has the new medium bendable leg piece that was introduced in this series. Hers were the only medium legs to come in a solid blue color.

The 10mm cloth skirt with 4 holes completely wraps around the common blue leg piece and is unique to this set. We have seen Luna’s dress printed onto her leg piece, but this is the first and as of now only time it has come as a separate piece. This eccentric article of clothing fits Luna’s personality and deserves to be highlighted. The colorful unicorns, birds, stars, circles and hearts printed onto a black fabric match her movie costume and looks great!

The torso piece is also unique to this minifigure. Luna is wearing her dark pink shrug jacket. The amount of detail put into the front is amazing. Magenta lines were used to create the pleats in the fabric and dash lines for the stitching. The nougat buttons are given a 3d effect by the black outline, shadowing, and small slits for the button holes. Thicker black lines were used to form the collar and shape of the jacket itself. There was no printing put on the back, but her long hair completely covers the back, making backprinting unnecessary.

LEGO gave us another unique piece for her dual printed head. One side gives us Luna’s neutral expression. Luna will often have a vacant or distant look, even when in mortal danger, making the neutral expression perfect. The thin dark tan eyebrows and dark pink lips are a great match to Evanna Lynch’s appearance in the film. The other side has Luna wearing her spectrespecs. These large colorful glasses were given away free in an issue of The Quibbler and let people see the invisible wrackspurts that floated into people's ears and made their brain fuzzy. These large gold and pink glasses shaped like owl wings captured the odd design perfectly. I love how the pink and blue lenses are not a solid color, but use different shades to give a magical appearance. It makes them look alive, instead of being inanimate like our real life 3D glasses.

The long, bright yellow hair parted to the right is commonly found on Luna Lovegood minifigures. I love how LEGO was able to make this hair piece wavy. It doesn’t frame her face in a perfect oval. You can see the hair curling in front as bumps are fromed going around the edge. The locks of hair weaving in and out of each other on the back shows the amount of time LEGO took in creating this mold to mimic real hair.

She comes with her standard reddish brown wand. Luna’s book bag is as colorful as her. This dark purple messenger pouch is a fun piece to add to her ensemble. The detail put into the mold is great. You can clearly see the snaps holding the flap closed and the rings attached to the handle. I appreciate that LEGO does not make this a neat rectangle but has it bulging out as if it is filled with stuff. While it’s not unique, as of now, her and Green Goblin are the only ones sporting this fashion accessory in a dark purple. My favorite piece in this set is the 2X3 bright light blue tile piece printed to look like a copy of The Quibbler. The bright light blue tile is what makes this piece unique. This set came out in 2018, but in 2022 the printing from this piece was used again in the Hogwarts Carriage and Thestrals set 76400 and Hogwarts Magical Trunk set 76399. However those were printed on white tiles, keeping this a unique piece. It should be no surprise they reused this printing. It is AMAZING! We can clearly see this is the same issue Luna got her spectrespecs from. LEGO even included the scissors illustration showing us the reader can cut them from the cover. The bearded, wild haired humanoid wearing the glasses was transformed into a minifigure. The hats color was changed, but they did include the runic symbols along the bottom. Many of the headlines were taken off the cover to simplify the look. LEGO did leave “Pandemonium at the Ministry” and “Unfuzz the Mystery”, which are the two that directly relate to the story. Of course, The Quibbler is clearly written across the top. The rest of the writing was implied by dashed lines.

Neville Longbottom 71022-6

Despite being a pure-blood wizard and descendant from a well respected wizarding family, Neville started off his years at Hogwarts as a shy, clumsy and introverted student. However, he would prove over and over why he was put into the Gryffindor House with Harry Potter. This courage, bravery and determination helped his friends on numerous occasions. He would be the one to behead Voldemort’s snake Nagini, thus destroying the final Horcrux. Neville loved herbology. He excelled at it in school and would later become a Herbology professor at Hogwarts.

Neville has the new medium bendable leg piece that was introduced in this series. Unfortunaly, they are a solid black so will quickly become extremely common.

Since a LEGO Herbology Class set would not come out until 2021, this was the first time LEGO collectors could get a Hogwarts student in their gardening smock. The tan torso with dark tan wrinkle lines and a single pocket on the left side looks great. A similar design would be reused for Herbology student minifigures in the future. However, the feature that keeps this piece unique to the CMF Neville Longbottom is his Gryffindor tie. That dark red and bright light orange tie pattern lets us know exactly which house this student belongs to. The minifigure is also given reddish brown hands to show us he is wearing gloves and ready to start digging up and replanting some Mandrakes.

I love the dual sided head piece. The first side with the dark red eyebrows, wide eyes and large buck teeth is nice. I particularly like the buck teeth that LEGO printed onto the head. Oftentimes, this style makes the character look more like a chipmunk than human. It’s the other side with the closed eyes that makes me love this piece. The printing detail is amazing. The slightly changed shape to the eye brows, the medium nougat lines under the eyes and the mouth curved down captures that comedic moment in the film when Neville faints in class as the Mandrake is pulled out by Professor Sprout.

The dark brown, short tousled hair piece is exclusive to this minifigure. While Neville has remembered to bring earmuffs to Herbology class sets, this is the only time he has put them on over his ears. Other minifigures have Neville wearing them around his neck as a separate piece. Here the earmuff pattern is molded onto the hair piece. The headphone shape in the LEGO parts design might not be an exact match to the fluffy earmuffs used by Hogwarts students but the coloring and messy hair are great for a LEGO minifigure.

Neville comes equipped with his trusty dark brown wand and a Mandrake. LEGO made two brand new pieces to create the Mandrake plant that can kill a human with their screams or cure someone who has been petrified. A lucky coincidence these plants were being grown at Hogwarts, when the Chamber of Secrets had been opened. The bright green plant stem with bar, 3 leaves and small pin was first used for this CMF character. However, it would be commonly used the following year and in less than a decade available in over 200 sets. The medium nougat plant root with stud and bar also made its debut in this set and would be used again in the Disney CMF Series 2 for Chip’s acorn. Thanks to the reddish brown printing used to create the Mandrake’s eyes, mouth and wrinkles, this piece remains exclusive to this set. So Neville can put this screaming Mandrake back in the dirt, he was also given a small pot with handle holds. Even though the piece has been around since 2012, this remains the only time it has come in a dark orange color. The pieces used to build the Mandrake are fantastic and do a wonderful job recreating these memorable magical plants. The use of dark orange lets us easily visualize this cauldron as a clay planter.

Cho Chang 71022-7

Cho Chang was a Ravel Claw at Hogwarts and the seeker on her house Quidditch team. She was also Harry Potter’s first romantic crush. While she was dating Cedric at the time of his death, she would later date Harry during her time in Dumbledore’s Army. Their relationship was short but she was still a major part of Harry’s life and the Hogwarts school.

Cho was given the new medium bendable leg piece in a solid black, but it would be almost completely covered by the dark grey wrap around dress piece. With only the feet showing, it looks like she is wearing black shoes with her school uniform.

For the torso piece, she is wearing her Raven Claw school colors. The knitted striped bottom of her sweater goes around the front and back of the minifigure. I appreciate the creases in the fabric that make it look like a real article of clothing being worn on a human body and not a piece of hard plastic. The tie piece is a dark blue and light grey color. While Raven Claw’s house colors are blue and bronze, the blue and grey colors match the costume worn in the film.

Like most of the Hogwarts student minifigures, Cho Chang only comes with one facial expression. The big toothy smile looks nice. The white dots on the eyes make the character come alive. The long thin eyebrows are well shaped but will be completely hidden by the hair piece. Unfortunately this head piece lacks any real character detail. While getting a head piece that can be used for other characters is nice, for the Collectable Minifigure Series, I expect more thought in the printing.

Cho was given a long soft rubbery hair piece. The short bangs in front and long hair hanging over her shoulders and back look amazing. While this is the first time this hair piece was used for Cho, it would be used again for her character in future building sets.

Cho was given a wand and creature piece. I love her owl accessory. This is probably a reference for when Cho and Harry met at the Owelry and Harry finally build up the courage to ask Cho out. Unfortunately, she was already going to the dance with Cedric, so this would not be the happy moment Harry was hoping for. It was lucky for us LEGO collectors, because we got this great new owl piece. The nougat owl with tan chest feathers looks great. I love all the detailed work put into the face. The beak, marking around the eyes and head feathers are so well designed that is capture the look of a real owl perfectly.

Dean Thomas 71022-8

Dean Thomas entered Hogwarts the same year as Harry Potter and both were sorted into Gryffindor. While he was good friends with Harry Potter and his group of friends, Dean’s best friend was Seamus Finnigan. Much like Harry Potter, Dean was raised as a muggle and didn’t know about the magical world before entering Hogwarts. Dean’s father was a Wizard and never told his muggle mother or him about his magical background. He thought this would protect them during the First Wizard War. Unfortunately, he was killed by Death Eaters when he refused to join them. Dean would join Dumblesore’s Army and be part of the final Battle of Hogwarts. He survived the battle, but not much is known about his life thereafter.

Thanks to that Gryffindor scarf hanging down Dean's right leg, we get an original piece. For even more detail, we can see the folds in the robe running down the rest of the leg piece. Dean was given the new medium bendable leg pieces that were first used in this series.

The red and light orange Gryffindor scarf was printed on the front and back of the torso piece. I love how we can see the folds in the scarf as it is wrapped around the neck. Oftentimes the back gets a little less detailed but that did not happen here. The scarf has just as much detail as the front, we see the hood folded down in the back and we can see two crease lines on the back sides of his robe. The front of the torso gives us all those details we saw in the film and is another original piece. The Gryffindor crest is printed onto the left chest of his cloak. The ties fastening the cloak together can be seen at the top. I am amazed that LEGO was able to put so much detail into his sweater underneath. Even though we only see a small portion of it, LEGO put in the lines along the hem and included the Gryffindor house colors.

The head piece is also unique to this set. LEGO made sure to make the one face printing look great. Dean has a huge toothy smile, showing us his excitement. Reddish brown lines were used to show us the features of his cheeks and chin as he gives us this radiant smile. The black eyebrows and eyes with white pupils cement this happy expression.

The hair is the first non-original piece usd for this minifigure. The dark brown hair with coiled texture has been used on 14 minifigures so far. The shape itself comes with 65 minifigures. The hair piece is nice and is a great match to Alfred Enoch hair in the films.

Dean comes with 2 accessories. The first is the standard minifigure wand. Dean’s wand comes in the dark brown color. For his unique accessory, Dean Thomas is showing his house pride by waving the Gryffindor flag. The flag was built using a reddish brown 4L bar for the pole and a dark red 2X2 square flag. The Gryffindor House Crest printed on the flag piece is mind boggling. Griffindor was printed clearly along the bottom banner. The lion in the center is drawn in amazing detail. (I was always bothered that the Gryffindor banner had a lion and not a winged griffon.) A detail that I love is that the feathery decorations around the crest are small minifigure plume feathers and triple compact plume feathers. It is an amazing blend of the real life inspiration and the LEGO art style.

Lord Voldemort 71022-9

Tom Riddle would be better known as the dark wizard Voldemort. So great was Voldemort’s power that he was often referred to as the Dark Lord or He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, depending on who was talking about him. His plan to rule the wizarding world and treat the muggles like the inferior creatures he viewed them as. When his killing curse backfired on him while trying to kill the baby Harry Potter, he was forced to flee into the shadows and wait for his power to return. He was the main villain in the Harry Potter series as the prophecy of “either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives” plays out.

Voldemort was given the new dress piece mold. This piece replaced the old 65 2X2X2 Slope with bottom tube that used to be used for the minifigure dress piece. I love this new dress piece a lot better. The sloping back makes it look more like a real piece of fabric as opposed to a rigid brick. The dark green fabric and small black lines printed on it to create folds in his robe.

The dark green toros piece continues the robe design. The top of the robe is much more detailed. We still have the fold in the fabric, but we can also see the robe crossing over across the chest, so it wraps firmly around the person wearing it. The arms and back of the torso piece are devoid of any detail. However, Voldemort himself dresses rather plainly.

The legs, torso and head piece were all exclusively found in this set. While Voldemort’s robes look nice, they didn’t challenge the design team either. The head pieces show their artistic skills and stands out as an original piece. The dark bluish grey lines help create the reptilian appearance of Voldemort’s face. The nougat eye shadowing reveals there is a human in there somewhere. The eyebrows and thin lips give off his menacing attitude. A fun LEGO trivia fact is that minifigures don’t have noses, yet Voldemore who doesn’t have a nose was given one for his minifigure. The two black lines create the slits in Voldemort’s face. These slits are his nostrils and make him look even more monstrous.

For his accessory, Voldemort has his white wand and pet snake Nagini. While this giant snake started out as a simple terrifying creature, it turned out to be so much more. Originally a human, she was cursed and eventually turned into a snake permanently. Voldemort would eventually use her as a Horcrux. LEGO gave us a new olive green snake piece to create Nagini. The mold is significantly larger than the standard LEGO snake. The raised head brings this inanimate piece of plastic to life. The black eyes are the only other color found on this creature piece. This makes it look even more frightening.

Dobby 71022-10

Dobby was the Malfoy family’s house elf, until Harry Potter set him free. Once free of the Malfoys’ servitude, Dobby began working at Hogwarts as a free elf. He was not only a great friend to Harry, but also instrumental to his survival. This would be the third version of Dobby released by LEGO. While he has made appearance in video games, the last minifigure had not appeared since the Freeing Dobby set number 4736 from 2010.

Since elves in the Harry Potter world are significantly shorter than humans, small kid legs are a must. This leg piece had tan at the top for his robes and light nougat at the bottom to show his bare legs.

The tattered clothing worn by elves was a common way to show their loyalty to the house they served. While all three Dobby minifigures had the raggedy shirt look, you can see the advancement of printing technology over the years. You can almost feel all that grime building up on these clothes that have never been washed.

Dobby’s head has seen the most improvement. This unique headmold is not a true minifigure head, but necessary for the large ears, long nose and protruding mouth of an elf. It was this unique head mold with its soft rubbery ears that let people know they have found the Dobby minifigure in the blind bag. The printing on the head not only helped highlight the facial features, but also gives the character life. You can almost see the happiness in his lime eyes at being a free elf, after years of long servitude.

The accessory Dobby comes with was not only a great character piece but an integral part in the Harry Potter series. For Dobby, there is a 1X2 tile piece with a sock printed on it. This is the sock Harry snuck into Lucius Malfoy’s book for Dobby to be set free. The book it is placed in is none other than Tom Riddle’s Diary. To show the care LEGO put into this piece, the cover of the book is ripped and has a puncture in it where Harry Potter stabbed it with the basilisk fang to destroy it. This would end up being the first of 7 horocruxes needing to be destroyed before Voldemort could be ultimately defeated.
