LEGO Jurassic World Dinosaur Market Polybag Set 30390 Review

Today we will be taking a closer look at the LEGO Jurassic World themed polybag Dinosaur Market set number 30390. This set came out in 2022, has 34 pieces, and was designed for people 6 and up.

The Dinosaur Market polybag was based on the 2022 Jurassic World Dominion film. The 3rd film in the Jurassic World franchise has dinosaurs reintroduced in the world and living alongside humans. Of course this would lead to dinosaurs being sold in markets much like exotic animals are today. For this polybag, LEGO has a merchant selling a baby velociraptor and a dinosaur egg from his small market stall. What could possibly go wrong with breeding and selling raptors in the open market?

Market Stall Owner Minifigure

The Market Stall Owner minifigure is exclusive to this set, but all of the pieces to build him have been used for lots of different minifigures. His dark brown pants, dark red shirt, light bluish grey hooded sweatshirt and dark bluish grey beanie look great on somebody working outside. You can picture him setting up shop during the cold morning before most people are awake. I love the printed detail on the sweatshirt. The dark grey drawstrings coming out of the collar look fantastic. I like the side pockets put on the bottom of his sweatshirt. The hood hanging down the back looks three dimensional. Jurassic World collectors might notice this is the same toro piece used for Zach Michell in the Indominus Rex sets. The head piece with dual facial printing will look familiar to LEGO fans from across themes. It has been used for Captain America, Han Solo, Cedric Diggory, Marty McFly and many others. The minifigure can either be happy with the sale he just made or angry at an annoying customer. If you have ever worked retail, I’m sure you can relate. Although dark bluish grey is the most common color used for the beanie piece, I think it looks great for this character working out in the cold.

Amber Piece

The merchant is holding one more product to sell at his stand. He has a 1X1 translucent orange brick with yellow streaks and a black mosquito printed on it. This piece represents a mosquito trapped in amber. Extracting dinosaur DNA from these prehistoric blood suckers is how the Jurassic World or Park franchise all started. This piece can be found in a total of 8 sets and 3 books and I am sure that number will keep growing. It might not be rare, but it’s still a nice piece to get in a relatively cheap set.

Baby Velociraptor

You can’t have a dinosaur market and not have any dinosaurs to sell. LEGO included a dark orange baby velociraptor creature piece for this set. The standing baby dinosaur with yellow eyes is a common piece and comes in lots of different color patterns. This is my third variant. The vendor in this set is selling a dark orange raptor with a brown pattern on top. LEGO uses this particular color pattern a lot and it can be found in 9 sets so far.

Market Stall

The build for this set is the market stall. The stall is built on a 6X6 dark tan plate. I like that the back wall is built with two dark brown 1X2 log profile bricks. It helps sell the illusion that this stand is built from wood. To give the stall height, 1X2X3 black windows were put on the side. This allows for a quick build that doesn’t require a lot of pieces. My favorite part of this build was the six dark brown 2X2X2/3 wedges used for the roof. These wedges were put along a 1X6 plate and 1X6 raised arch. The shingled roof looks amazing. At the beginning of the build a 33 3X2 inverted slope was put on the side. This acts as a shelf to place an open box, containing a dinosaur egg. A fun detail for the stand is the heat lamp built above the egg to help it hatch. The 1X1 tile clip attached to a 2X2 inverted radar dish to create lights is a standard LEGO build. Adding the translucent orange round plate lets us know this is a heat lamp to keep the egg warm and not a display light to show off his product. I’m glad LEGO put the 1X2 open plate with free end handle on both sides of the stall, instead of just the side needing to attach the lamp. It adds nice symmetry. The dinosaur is pened in with three 1X4X1 black lattice fences. I don’t think that’s going to keep him inside. Final Thoughts

The Dinosaur Market Polybag doesn’t impress. The build is simple and uninspiring. It feels like LEGO wanted to give fans a Jurassic World themed Polybag, but had no idea what they wanted to create. If you are into the Jurassic World theme, you probably already have the pieces this set offers. For the larger LEGO community, the minifigure and dinosaur are general enough to be easily incorporated into MOC work, but the parts to price ratio is not great.
