LEGO Harry Potter and Hedwig Owl Delivery 30420 Review

Today we will be taking a closer look at the Harry Potter and Hedwig Owl Delivery set number 30420. This set came out in 2020, has 31 pieces, and was designed for people 6 and up.

Free Giveaway.

This set was originally a free giveaway with purchases at the physical LEGO stores and LEGO.com. You had to buy $40 dollars or more on LEGO Harry Potter themed sets starting September 1st. The offer was valid until supplies ran out. If you missed this window, it would later be widely available at other retailer stores for $4.99.

The Story

The set is inspired by the Philosopher's Stone scene, where Hedwig delivers Harry a Nimbus 2000 broom during meal time. While the students and Harry were surprised by this Owl Deliver, Professor McGonagall was not. I am not sure if there are rules about the Head of the Gryffindor house giving the team's new Seeker a top of the line broom, but I am sure Hogwart's teachers would never play favorites with the students. Instead of building the Great Hall, we get a fully set table for Hedwig to drop the package on.

Harry Potter Minifgure

The Harry Potter character in this set is nothing special. This short leg minifigure in school uniform is the same one we have seen in three previous sets. Most people probably have this figure from either the Harry's Journey to Hogwarts polybag set 30407 or the larger Hogwarts Great Hall set 75954. Both of these sets were released early into the Wizarding World Theme launch.

Common or not, you have to love the printing work LEGO puts into the torso piece. The sweater with the Gryffindor colors running along the bottom looks nice, but the detail put into the red and yellow tie always impresses me. They even put the collar to his white undershirt for it to go under. The small smile on one side of the head piece is appropriate for the setting, but the scared expression does not. A more surprised than terrified would have been a better fit.

Table

The table build is a basic design that consists of a long bench on each side attached to a rectangular table. It reminds me of many LEGO park bench table builds. The table itself is 4X8 studs large and offers lots of room to attach different items in a variety of area. The legs on the side use a 1X4 arch piece on both ends to give a solid build and create the appearance of 4 legs holding the table up.

The Feast

Much like the film, the table is filled with food for a feast. There are two gold goblets, two pastries and a turkey leg. The plates were made using 2X2 Round tile pieces with an open stud in the center. The pastries were constructed by putting reddish brow plates with vertical swirls onto tan 1X1 round plates. It's simple but works perfectly.

Hedwig

The new Hedwig creature piece was the draw for this set. While the white owl with spread wings already available in other sets, this was by far the cheapest one available. The others are in much more expensive. To have Hedwig hold onto the broom, a 1L bar with mechanical claw piece is used for his talons.

Conclusion

This was a fun FREE promotional set for LEGO Harry Potter fans. That being said; with the exception of the new owl creature piece, there is no reason to purchase this polybag. The set doesn’t offer any other unique pieces or interesting build techniques.
